  • in one day

  • this is awesome

i am in 3rd grade and i already have 18,000 energy points

  • put up econ exercises pls

  • Telecurso copiado.

  • i like this video

  • Your video is awesome!

  • you guys have a lot of videos, thanks so much for the help!

  • Great job

  • :)

  • oh man a science exercise software would be awesome. i've currently mastered arithmetic and on my way to algebra but i would like to dedicate some time on other subjects.

  • interesting

  • I love the way the things on the badges become denser the less dense you become!

  • Im 20 years old, and math has never been my strong suit, a combination of mediocre teachers, and my own disinterest, left my overall knowledge of Mathematics so-so as best, and then I discovered Khan Academy. I had entertained the idea of becoming an engineer, but I thought I was too stupid to ever, accomplish anything like that, now I know that it is possible, I know I must sound extremely overdramatic, but Im just so happy. Thank you KA, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU :)

  • Fantastic. All carrot, no stick.

  • I can't tell you how much I wish they had this when I was a kid! Awesome work!

  • I am a student and I had a hard time with (dont laugh at me) multiplying and dividing fractions. This program helped me master that and loads of other topics, and I love it! It is a great alternative to IXL, which my school uses. Thank you Khan Academy! Thank you so much!

  • @silverstripe822 No one will laugh at you you are great because you are trying to learn and to achieve. Keep up the good work.

    .

  • Wow! This is amazing! I am a mom to a 5 yo little boy with autism and I am researching ways to help him in school because he's not ready to be fully mainstreamed yet but has the math ability of an 8 yo child! A friend told me about Khan Academy and I'm looking into seeing if this will be able to help him in his class... I'm thinking it might be part of our solution to help him.

  • Thank you so much for giving all of us the chance to smartin up at an affordable price ( free) THANK YOU SIR

  • MashaAllah

  • I discovered through 20/20 tonight - OMGoodness!! AMAZING!! If I study this, I can actually take my GRE.........

  • never had so much fun learning math. :D

  • great vid as always

  • This is just beautiful.

  • This as an MMORPG. Traditional school is now obsolete.

  • This is great and the way of future education!! I'm 32 now but I will go back and brush up on my highschool education using this. . .especially in those subjects I didn't take in highschool. Just wish I had this tool when I was in highschool, would have made life SO much easier. I had a lot of trouble following lectures. . I'm a visual self-learner. . that teaching method did not suit me.

  • If I become proficient in three more exercises, I get my first sun badge! :)

  • I hear Khan uses a Wacom Bamboo Tablet for his lectures. Anyone know what exact model he uses? There are different sizes, etc. Thanks.

  • Khan academy seems to be helping out. So much better than high school. There should be more lessons though. I hope they will cover up more advanced materials.

  • (Part 2 of 2) * The type of mistake a student made when choosing a wrong answer; e.g., did he forget to square the distance, did she apply kinetic energy conservation instead of momentum conservation, did he forget that the forces were in opposite directions, did she confuse force of friction with coefficient of friction, etc.

    * software that anticipates and recognizes those common mistakes (like all great teachers do) and gives the students immediate, tailored feedback during the exercise

  • (Part 1 of 2) I find most of this dashboard info useless, like knowing how many times a student rewound the movie, how many times she paused it, or how long he spent on a module. Those times could be affected by distractions from family, self-imposed distractions like facebook and texting, etc.

Feedback I would find WAY MORE useful:

    * How many times a student attempted the same problem

    * The student’s answer history to each problem; i.e, what the student’s wrong answers were

  • i have more points and badges then him XD

  • @ksr1219 lol hahaha!

  • i love where can i get this software?

  • @TheElbergudon It's free on their site.

  • @ksr1219 Our minds crave "good" things and hate "bad" thing. Example: Suppose you were playing a game. No matter how good the game would be. Without the challanges and the poerks and guns that you unlock, keeps you more intested. I know studoig isn't the best medium to love but... If you just let yourself imgaine that these badges are unlocks you are earning for unloking new level. You will be surpriesd of how easily your brain will belive it. :)

  • @ksr1219 i understand y u would say that. But if you really imtimate yourslef and act like the badge is some type of a trophy you are earning. I think that would really make you a more professicant learner. Ever played mw2? Act like the badge is a fkin nuke.

  • I can't wait until Sal gets up to differential equations for this!! Then again, I still need to come back to the trig ones.

  • this is VERY BAD design, someone fluent in math like a high school student would not waste time starting with simple addition... when he needs to learn integration and derivatives and would like practice problems with those instead

  • @Fatalsh0ts you dont need to start out with addition lol. you can start out with what you want.

  • @Fatalsh0ts Students aren't required to start with addition. Someone who needs to review calculus can jump right to limit problems. Although, I agree that the recommendation system could be improved. I just gained proficiency in the "Pythagorean Theorem 2" module and now it's simultaneously encouraging me to take basic addition and Trigonometry.

  • When are Physics exercises coming up?

  • When is Physics exercises coming up?

Great Work!, Salman Khan should get a Nobel Prize.

  • this in a great tool ! but ... where's the button 'more time for a teacher' in order to get time to create the input ?

  • Awesome! I would only supress behaviorism which is animal training. Badges like grades turn learning into an obstacle between the student and the prize. I couldn't care less for badges. You have me motivated with no need for extrinsic rewards. The reward is your remarkable work and the fact that I can learn with no need of the artificial dependency of a teacher.

  • Comment removed

  • I think the behaviourism aproach to some parts of math is excellent! But you still need a teacher for a more philosophical aproach to any subject... This is why khan academy is a great help, and even a great idea for autonomus learning

  • Awesome! I can't wait for the science exercises like physics!

  • so cool! I wish there will be a programming course from basic and up for kids.

  • 1st: Personal and government donations 2 different animals. Any way, instead of a long dragged out back and forth "your momma" kind of issue, I want to say: My personal thought about what he offers is this: I cannot WAIT to get my kids involved in this! I saw CBS falling over him on TV when it originally aired, I (first thought) oh great... but then when I found out that it started because of his sister I thought... hey maybe this is good... I remembered the name and started looking at it.

  • Looks FANTASTIC. No problem with the concepts on MOST and I'm really counting on this to really do wonders. Since then, locally, there has been an uprising of union pawns demanding money and holier than thou treatment and insisting that people should have to deal with less so that they can have more. All the while, reports one after the other, show how our kids, in short, are becoming retards in regards to their techniques. Obviously, something different has to happen.

  • The public schools are insistent on well roundedness at the sacrifice of denying that the basics are down pat first. Yes "enrichment" is important but IMO not at the sacrifice of losing the child from the basics. There are private schools but the best ones that ensure that the basics will be down pat, you lose the enrichment of the arts. So do you want an educated dry kid or an "explorative" young adult that has to spend the first 2-4 years in college to struggle in math, reading and writing?

  • Or worse they just drop out or join the armed services (not that serving your country is bad, its the reasons WHY you want to go). Also have you seen the news lately? Competition is FIERCE!!! And you want them to wait more years to compete at the same level as peers who managed to get everything the first time? Shockingly, survival of the fittest is at play and Title I is a joke to these struggling kids.

  • The Title I teachers are lost, confused and spend more time playing Assistant Teacher than helping the child individually. The longer you wait for them to catch up to the rest, its too late. their done. By the time you accept that your kid is struggling, you are already losing. This is a parents PANIC session if they give a crap about their education. I assume its the reason why most of you are even on here reading this stuff in the first place.

  • Now that said. Personal donations, fantastic. Grant money and state funded and federal funded? I can smell the toxicness of public education oozing in this WORK OF ART. I hate the thought of it. Period. You still dont agree? Well that's mine and the opinion of millions of other tax payers thoughts. Yes, he may make good use of it, but on a state and federal leash? Nope sorry. I'd be afraid that it'll be doomed like all the other funded disasters before it.

  • People will pay as will I an education idea/concept that ACTUALLY works. And an enviornment like KHAN's ACADEMY may be just that. But I cannot help but be concerned about federal and state involvement if he starts taking money from them. So with that, sorry if it upsets people but I just wish more people saw the concerns that I have and not just have a blind eye and assume everything will fall into place.

  • Mr. Considerate? Oh sarcasm, right. Because Its evil to question whether state or federal money is really needed for education when people are able to provide it through people like him. You didn't freak out when I said I thought it was interesting, you didn't ever criticize that I though he was ingenious, BUT the moment I questioned if it was right for him to receive federal or state money, it results in childish name calling. Not a very hearty constitution. Personal donation is ok2me BTW.

  • The khanakademy website requires google or facebook login to get full functionality. ... I always wanted to think that "free education" doesn't only mean "without a price tag" but also free as in freedom. Perhaps someone should make a video on rising privacy problems (in which google and facebook play major part) FOR khanacademy.

    .

    watch?v=Vsxxsrn2Tfs

  • Interesting stuff, too bad instead of an ingenious person who took it upon himself with volunteers, its turning into a grant fed monster. Now all I hear is that so and so dumped into Khan University X dollars. It would have been inspiring if he never took a dollar. Now its just another union monster in the making. But then again, its based in California so whats so shocking about that. Come on for once cant you guys make something for the common good and not get a paycheck from it?!

  • @avenqer While that generally is true...as long as the quality remains as it is and it remains free to use, there won't be any problems.

  • @avenqer Do you smell that? Smells like a slippery slope fallacy.

  • @avenqer Ok Mr Considerate how does he feed himself... through the goodwill of his heart???!!!!! You must be living in lalaland. And besides he's not asking for it!! People are generously donating!

  • Can you please make a English Section

  • watch?v=BOLPhETjhmE

    I GOT THAT EPIC BADGE!!!

  • Thank you very much.

This concept gives me the 'space' I need to learn. For a brain damaged 40 yr old father of 7 that left home at 13, the Khan Academy is a liberating force, and a most illuminating beacon.

yes, thank you so much SK!

  • I agree!!! Nobel Prize all the way!!!! It makes me want to quit my career and come work for you! Also, I would love to see collaboration with RSAnimate for the tutorial videos! I look forward to watching this evolve and change the lives of everyone on this planet!

  • Can you please expand this software to different subject areas?

  • What does it mean when a module that I've already completed goes orange on the knowledge map?

  • Oh...My God...this is amazing.

  • Khan academy has changed my life and expanded my mind.

  • do you there would be this kind of software for chem/biology?? it would be nice :)

  • @jennijenjen9 Khan academy has videos for all that, even physics and other things.

  • ...Or you could make the process even quicker and more data driven by quality controlling volunteer questions and randomizing the volunteer video/teaching submissions to students, and then just keep the best performing video/teaching submissions according to how they impact progress on the question component.

  • I wish we had this for medical school level courses. Perhaps you could scale up your education tree faster if you had volunteer specialists (in their fields) submit videos and problems to you? And then your team could focus on quality control instead on primary content generation?

  • I think the badge system was a great idea as well because despite the fact that I am 15 years old, i happen to be an RPG fan so hey, what's a few badges as motivation? :D

  • This is such a simple concept yet so profound. Great work!

  • Great initiative! i would have liked this when i was taking math,

  • Where was this when I was going to school! It would've made math easy and fun! Okay well maybe not easy, but definitely FUN!

  • You are an inspiration. In a world where people ask "what's in it for them", you have done something selfless for the betterment of the next generation.

  • oooh stars.... if you do any new topics you should consider astronomy!

  • This is amazing!!! Thanks for all you are doing to bring rigorous content access to all KIDS!!!!

  • @kirbywehr I don't know if you are being sarcastic by saying "KIDS" or not but I believe this can be helpful for everyone!

  • This is amazing!!! Thanks for all you are doing to bring rigorous content access to all KIDS!!!!

  • OMG... I needed something like this when I was in school...

  • Khan Academy is the one and only channel i subscribed on Youtube because i find it more rewarding than game updates.

  • Thats effin amazing.

  • should put this system in an MMORPG so people don't just rot in front of their computers.

  • i have gone through ,few videos ,the explanation is fantastic .you are a real teacher.best wishes .

  • So can i use the knowledge map for other subject(s) such as physics?

  • @Hudstahh93xoxo it's still being built, he plans to put all subjects on the software, for now it's just math. hopefully with more funding, this project can move along faster :D

  • @VanMedia Oh, thanks! Yeah hopefully this project will expand massively! :)

Khan is just amazing, i should have found this website ages ago!

  • If there is one person who deserve a royalty status in this world, THATS YOU!

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again. LEGEND!

  • GETTING DETAILED STATISTICS OF STUDENT'S WORK! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN CLASSROOMS!

  • Khanacademy.edu?

  • Man, your'e a genius. I have tried to imagine ways to use software for improving our outdated education system and you already have a lot of this realized!

  • I love your vids and I was working with the past versions of your software. Loved the happy faces. badges seem better.

Will passing a node at one point (with 10 in a row) automatically give proficiency in the base levels? If I pass quantum physics...do I really need to complete my multiplication class?

  • This is fu***** awesome :)You're the best

  • This is genius! And fun.

  • I want this at my school, so those bad teachers GTFO

  • I always had ideas of merging video games/achievements with learning and education; you're bringing it to life...

Add more subject and detail to the subjects and maybe more incentive for the student to get those medals or earn the achievements, like maybe on the forums it shows some title or something...

  • For some reason every time i log in it just refreshes over and over again? wtf

  • Amazing idea man. im going to use the shit out of this website! haha

  • Omg, I always dreamed of something like this. I'm actually becoming a programmer and was planing to make something like this, lol. I can see this replacing school teachers in the future.

  • Omg, I always dreamed of something like this. I'm actually becoming a programmer and was planing to make something like this, lol.

  • Cool, You're the best!

  • Hey Sal, i bet your wife has cancelled her ultimatum by now.

  • Fantastic. Can you make a android app? :-)

  • Do you accept donations???

  • @paradoxicalcold

He does, look at the top right of the khanacademy homepage.

  • @paradoxicalcold yes he does, go on his website

  • I love how one of the badges of accomplishments is a rock. lol

  • Definitely will have my son know about this.

  • keep it up sal

  • I'd like to invest in this.

  • This is unbelievable, Top tier colleges could take some notes from you.

  • Holy Schmoly! If this doesn't revolutionize education I don't know if anything could. Keeping track of the progress in such a detailed way is simply not possible without this or similar software, not for a teacher nor the student him/herself. This is just amazing.

  • 4:32 "They're doing both at home AND at night!!!"

    WHOA!!! Now that's impressive.

  • Assessment looks good. But I could think of many ways it could try to help get a student unstuck beyond watching the video again or calling on a teacher. 1: if the student is stuck: Math notation should be explained or expanded in plain English, as should the steps taken. 2: Once a student gets past being stuck, they should be invited to share how they got past the block, so that KA can learn from it and improve the lessons or hints, and to help others. Hope to see KA keep improving!

  • free, global, higher learning is the greatest contribution to the human race

  • Sal, You are my hero. Thanks for everything you have done for me.

  • and... Big Brother is watching you... Anyway, keep on going.

  • Blatzing!

  • VVVV comment was to long.

.... what's truly effective. Perhaps it would be possible to remove some of the granularity of the system, but it would be hard to retain all of the benefits. Would you feel better as the student if you didn't know about this part? Lol... with the right teacher, hopefully transparency can help build trust with the student"... BLah blah blah

  • @DrFlox, the teacher knows when you turn in traditional assignments, what grades you get, if you finish your exams early or are working up until the last minute, they can tell if you take notes or are texting all day... with this kind of system they need a way to measure progress so that they can help when appropriate. Only the worst of teachers would abuse this privilege.

I would argue it takes a lot of stress out of learning, maybe not all of it can be removed, it's a balance as to what's t

  • Wow. This is amazing. Just think if this software were available for all of the hard sciences too? And yeah, I agree--Khan deserves a Nobel for sure.

  • @Zeuts85 Ya we need some hard physics vids or some advanced math aswell...

  • I'm serious. You really deserve a Nobel prize!

  • As a student I would feel quite stressed knowing that the teacher can watch my every move... I mean, is it really necessary that he can see that the student worked on a particular module at 8PM for 45:20min? Big Brother.....

  • You made learning too much fun....I can't go to sleep....need higher score.....

  • Is this software currently working ? if yes what do I put in the URL to get to the page where I can use it.

  • @xAsianZombie khanacademyDOTorg/ click under "Do Exercises" you'll have to have a Google or Facebook account.

  • @xAsianZombie go to Khan Academy and click on "Do Exercises"

  • I'd vote for him

  • Sal, can you please run for president of the USA?

  • This is the best thing I've ever seen. Why wasn't this around when I was younger

  • YOU ARE AMAZING MAN!!!

  • lol who disliked this? wtf.

  • The new energy points and badges system is VERY encouraging. Definetely a GREAT idea.

Thanks for everything you are doing for mankind.

  • this is an astonishing move on behalf of the Khan Academy. To give people the chance to increase their academic knowledge with zero-cost, high quality lessons and - now - exercise software to help individuals of any level is -for lack of a better word- incredible. Thanks for all the hard work, Sal.

  • Amazing! Thank you so much Sal !

  • Truly incredible. Is this going to be made for the other subjects such as Physics as well?

  • @eddieschod

Hey, me too! Although Sal probably wouldn't use his own exercise system...

  • You deserve a Nobel prize Sir..........

  • @pradeepdj1 AGREED!!!

  • Amazing software.

  • Yes. Keep on going.

  • A stunning achievement Salman.

  • It's so awesome watching the # of lessons delivered go up every time Sal clicks to another page.

  • I agree with eddieschod. Google and Facebook logins for the most part render the practice problems and metrics inaccessible within the school. If the students could log in with just a fake username and password and a shared teacher email (for lost passwords etc.) you would open your site to thousands of additional classrooms.

  • excercises for all concepts !!!

  • Sir, is this require any software installation ?

If yes form where will I get it ...

  • Impressive! Sal, are you planning to make videos on computer programming?

  • This is fantastic!!! Now imagine if this existed for every single subject! Now we're REALLY talking educating the world.

  • An incredible concept! However, if the motivation is based on extrinsic rewards such as points/merits, what will then keep the students from comparing themselves to others in terms of achievements?Wouldn't that then be just like a normal post-exam situation where students compare their grades? And couldn't that, in turn, lead to actual demotivation of the student?

I'm only speculating, since studies has found out that too much positive reinforcement can have a negative effect on performance.

  • @Jonnemanne Khan Academy designer here - In practice we don't see this happening a lot. First, the profile information is private, so you can't choose to compare yourself to me. I would have to let you. Second, extrinsic rewards can have a negative impact on motivation if the task you are being asked to do is inherently interesting or creative. That's true for some kinds of math and not others *for most people*. We are aware of this and constantly monitoring and adjusting accordingly.

  • @postnormal Awesome! Thanks for a quick reply. :) Yes, I see your points now. I did not mean to question your effectiveness in any way, but was just wondering what might happen in a classroom setting. Once again, what you are doing is simply phenomenal. Keep up the good work!

    Greetings from Finland,

    Jonne

  • @Jonnemanne Not at all. Questions like this are good, and it's important for us to be thinking about them. I am always happy to take this kind of question because it means that you (the users/supporters) want us to succeed. Keep it coming :)

  • @postnormal I'm curious what age group you are running these trials with? I ask because the demotivational elements that occur are more likely to affect younger students. Even if you can't see my score, I can still brag about it and show off to others. Leading to a demotivational effect on those who aren't 'winning'.

Though on the plus side, one can bump one's points to a degree just by spending raw -time- on something. Even if you aren't the best at it.

  • @iriswaters We are working closely with groups of 5th and 7th graders. Profiles show a much more detailed picture of progress than simply points, and students seem to be much more interested in their own progress right now (they've been using it daily for about 2.5 months). I am curious what study your referring to that shows how these effects change based on age. Would love to read it. Could be very helpful.

  • This is amazing. I'm very impressed.

  • Sal, this is incredible. I hope the trial goes well!!

  • You're a legend. Keep up the good work.

  • This is the future

  • You sir, deserve all the internets out there.

  • Didn't even know this part of your site existed, but working good on it now :)
