It's a travesty the Bears only won 1 super bowl when they had this team. It's a shame that McMahon was so injury prone because he made the offense tick. In '84 they used FIVE different quaterbacks! in '86 as they said earlier in this game the Bears were worst in the NFL converting scores when in the red zone.
Look what happened in '85 when McMahon was healthy. The Defense pulverizes teams in their own half, McMahon and co convert the field position.
@gordonbrown76 Agree. When you compare the Bears to the other dominant NFC teams of this era, there is one, HUGE significant difference; back-up QB's capable of leading a team successfully. San Francisco had Steve Young backing up Joe Montana. Washington had Doug Williams ready to go for Jay Schroeder in 1987. The Giants had Dave Hostetler backing up Phil Simms in 1990. The result? Those 3 teams won multiple Super Bowls and the Bears did not. Chicago did not value that position and it cost them.
I remember this game so well- super bowl 21 1/2. We were watching it at a Chicago bar and were dancing on the tables with excitement after this runback.
Thanks for posting this old footage. I am a Giants fan since I was very young! Looking back, the Bears were just as as devastating as I remember. Simms wasn't mobile enough. This was a very frustrating game to watch but is interesting to compare to what we have today. Would the 46 d work today?
this wasn't the 46. When Ryan took the eagles job vince tobin was hired as d-coordinator, and he ran a conventional 4-3. D was still great, with that kind of talent they could have run anything and been great. But it wasn't the 46. For the record, the D in 86 was statistically better than in the super bowl year, even if without the constant pressure it wasn't as intimidating. If they had any continuity at QB they would have won more titles even without the 46.
The Bears between 1984-1988 should have won at least three titles... in particular 84, 85 and 86. 1984 lost title game to SF... but McMahon was hurt. 86 lost to Skins, but hurt QB again. I stil think Bears would have beat Giants in '86 had they played... Giants were fortunate that Skins beat Chicago in 86.
The Bears should have been a dynasty. They were the youngest team in the NFL in 1985 and the most dominating. They were unbelievable talented. If they only had steady quarterback play. Jim McMahon was injured all the time and no capable backups.
It was incredible that the Bears would have a capable QB like McMahon. Unfortunately, it was too much to ask for them to have a decent backup as well.

This isn't much of an accomplishment; the Giants sucked in 1987. Super Bowl hangover.
