223. You bring up that it was foreign over-fishing that had so much more to do with the decimation of the North Atlantic Cod. Interestingly the people of Iceland encountered the same problem Canada did in the 1950's - 70's, only they did something about it. They nearly went to war with England by sending their navy into the INTERNATIONAL water surrounding their island nation. Up to 200 miles out. Because of this Iceland has the only remaining North Atl. Cod fishery in the Atlantic Ocean.

Maybe CA. should have been a little more protective to that which was important to it. And, let's not forget how many of those foreign factory fishing boats were filled by Canadian fishing boat owners that filled their boats and met them far out to sea to fill the foreign ships with Cod.. The North Atlantic Cod went on Canadian boats but never saw DFO statistics since they were emptied into foreign ships.

It is estimated that each adult harp seal consumes 1.0-1.4 tonnes of fish annually, which translates to a consumption of 6 million metric tonnes each year by the North Atlantic population.

The peer reviewed EFSA study labeled the targeted seals, seals between 1 month to 3.5 months old, "Neonatal" as well. You just accept everything the seal hunt supporters say without question don't you?

I am both a seal hunt supporter and seal hunter. I have taken part in the seal hunt last year. It is those against the hunt who get all the misinformation from the same site. The seal hunt is no different than the killing of veal and other young livestock other than it takes place in the wild.

Got any problems with those? Data provided by activist groups is often cherry picked, so I don't use them. Also video fils to provide continuity of evidence. Again, that's why I never point to video and say "Look!" That's silly.

Your argument by analogy fails in this sense because the big differences between dogs and seals in this situation is that my dog is domesticated (isn't it mean that we bred them out of their own "free" nature), my dog does not consume fish or anything else from nature that I need myself, and my dog does not make a good fur coat anyways. (Source: DFO seal hunt myths page) Seals are not mentioned. Harp seals eat primarily squid and skates. The same food your dog eats. Only 5% of a seals stomach contents is cod.
That still means they are consuming Cod, thus causing harm to the population. Furthermore, what was the sample size of seals they used for their 5% stomach content of cod, what location were those seals found, what time of the year, and what time of the day. All factors that could throw those factors off.
You're one of those guys that says, "That's 5% too much cod that the seals are eating." In that case you need to write to the Canadian Recreational Fisheries Recourse Management and ask them why they allowed 1.2 million cod to disappear from the North Atlantic due to recreational fishing in '07. The DFO has even restarted a cod mini-season. The harp seals actually eat predators to cod eggs and newborn cod. A fact the DFO does not argue. The more seals there are, the more cod you'll have.

The study would not receive a peer reviewed rating if the panel of veterinarians who reviewed it found flaws in the methods or controls used. The report is accurate.

Um nooooooooo. What's the difference between the slaughter of cows and the Canadian commercial seal hunt? The difference is that baby cows aren't be slaughtered for their fur alone and their little carcasses left littering the farm fields of Iowa and Texas. As is the case with harp seals only it's the frozen waters of the Gulf of St. Laurence and the iceflows of The Front.

You're right. Fishing and deer hunting for the most part is not protested on the same level that the White, commercial seal hunt in Canada is. Reasons? First, indeed baby seals are still targeted, only the hunters wait for 3 weeks after the birth of the animal to begin slaughtering them. They still qualify as "Neonatal" animals according to the largest peer reviewed study ever done on all seal hunts arounf the world. The EFSA Q 2007-118. (Continued in Comment #2)

#6 Further the DFO has also stated that the seal hunt is not a cull. If indeed future studies would reveal a cull is necessary to protect the environment then fine, let them cull the adult seals, just like they do the adult deer.

Update - In case you haven't heard, the Farley Mowat crew members that were charged in regards to the April 2008 incident were found guilty earlier this month and will be sentenced on September 10th, 2009.
Video and radar evidence proved they were in Canadian waters.
You'll notice that these "activists" never mention global warming whenever they pitch the eco-tourism idea.
Apparently they think that if the hunt ended that the ice flows would magically stop melting, so that the tourists could visit them.
BTW, the 2007 ice conditions they use as an example were isolated to the Gulf of St. Laurence, where only 30% of pups were born. The front, where 70% of seals are born, had thicker than usual ice that year.
For a person that lives on Prince Edward Island I can safely say pretty much everything he said is untrue. A seal being clubbed in the head is a whole lot more humane than what happens to pigs and cattle that are raised as food.
And another thing, the reason that the younger seals are killed is because the adult ones already have learned how to survive and are able to reproduce again easily. Harp seals are abandoned by their mothers around 2 weeks of age. Baby harp seals have to learn virtually everything about survival by themselves. If they aren't slaughtered by hunters first.

223. You bring up that it was foreign over-fishing that had so much more to do with the decimation of the North Atlantic Cod. Interestingly the people of Iceland encountered the same problem Canada did in the 1950's - 70's, only they did something about it. They nearly went to war with England by sending their navy into the INTERNATIONAL water surrounding their island nation. Up to 200 miles out. Because of this Iceland has the only remaining North Atl. Cod fishery in the Atlantic Ocean.

Maybe CA. should have been a little more protective to that which was important to it. And, let's not forget how many of those foreign factory fishing boats were filled by Canadian fishing boat owners that filled their boats and met them far out to sea to fill the foreign ships with Cod.. The North Atlantic Cod went on Canadian boats but never saw DFO statistics since they were emptied into foreign ships.

They live in the ocean dude. I have sent you a copy/paste of a chart in the Laveign et al. rprt. It shows the exact break sown of what was found in the stomachs of harp seals from the North Atlantic. Harp Seals are opportunistic feeders, and will eat almost anything that is in great abundance. They have eaten massive amounts of Cod fish helping to decrease their number as well. It is estimated that each adult harp seal consumes 1.0-1.4 tonnes of fish annually, which translates to a consumption of 6 million metric tonnes each year by the North Atlantic population.

What a load! Baby seals ARE still the targets of the commercial seal hunt. The hunters just have to wait for the pups to turn 12 days old for their lanugo white coat to begin molting. Even the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans calls harp seals under 6 weeks old "Neonatal". The peer reviewed EFSA study labeled the targeted seals, seals between 1 month to 3.5 months old, "Neonatal" as well. You just accept everything the seal hunt supporters say without question don't you?

Actually no, it isn't hypocritical for meat eaters to oppose the hunt. An analysis of 2007 DFO hunt statistics shows that only 4% of the edible biomass generated by the hunt is ever sold as "meat". That being said, unless you're willing to eat seal fur, it's best you drop that argument entirely.

Schwanzmann I can tell you seal hunt supporters all get your misinformation from the same websites. Two things on "tradition" The tradition was the Norwegians. They came over from Norway to exploit the population of baby whitecoats until it became illegal in 1987. The seal hunt has only been regulated since 1963. If you want to argue tradition as a reason to continue killing, then why did the people of Newfoundland stop killing the Beothuk Indian's? Proud of that tradition? Sent u a video.

I am both a seal hunt supporter and seal hunter. I have taken part in the seal hunt last year. It is those against the hunt who get all the misinformation from the same site. The seal hunt is no different than the killing of veal and other young livestock other than it takes place in the wild.

According to an analysis of 2007 DFO hunt statistics, less than 4% of the edible biomass created by the seal hunt is eventually sold as meat. If the seal were 100% utilized like the Inuit dom then there wouldn't be so much opposition. None the less, the veal industry has declined 85% since the early 80's since information campaigns have exposed the industry for what it is; inhumane.

The information I am providing comes from the DFO's own website, peer reviewed third part studies and completely uninvolved third part reports like those from the US CDC and the US meat association. Got any problems with those? Data provided by activist groups is often cherry picked, so I don't use them. Also video fils to provide continuity of evidence. Again, that's why I never point to video and say "Look!" That's silly.

Your argument by analogy fails in this sense because the big differences between dogs and seals in this situation is that my dog is domesticated (isn't it mean that we bred them out of their own "free" nature), my dog does not consume fish or anything else from nature that I need myself, and my dog does not make a good fur coat anyways. Furthermore, what was the sample size of seals they used for their 5% stomach content of cod, what location were those seals found, what time of the year, and what time of the day. All factors that could throw those factors off.

You're one of those guys that says, "That's 5% too much cod that the seals are eating." In that case you need to write to the Canadian Recreational Fisheries Recourse Management and ask them why they allowed 1.2 million cod to disappear from the North Atlantic due to recreational fishing in '07. The DFO has even restarted a cod mini-season. The harp seals actually eat predators to cod eggs and newborn cod. A fact the DFO does not argue. The more seals there are, the more cod you'll have.

The peer reviewed study showig harp seals only have 5% cod in their bellies was conducted by Dr. David Laveign et al. and issued in 1998. The study would not receive a peer reviewed rating if the panel of veterinarians who reviewed it found flaws in the methods or controls used. The report is accurate.

Um nooooooooo. What's the difference between the slaughter of cows and the Canadian commercial seal hunt? The difference is that baby cows aren't be slaughtered for their fur alone and their little carcasses left littering the farm fields of Iowa and Texas. As is the case with harp seals only it's the frozen waters of the Gulf of St. Laurence and the iceflows of The Front.

First, indeed baby seals are still targeted, only the hunters wait for 3 weeks after the birth of the animal to begin slaughtering them. #3. In 2006 there were so many excess furs that Canada tried trading them to the EU through the Aboriginals of Greenland. The EU saw the tricky and declined to buy. 50,000 harp seal pelts were burned because there was simply no market for them. Nevertheless, the quota remained nearly the same in 2007. Waste upon waste. Do your own research before simply reiterating the BS propaganda your East Coast politician propagate as platforms to run on under the guise of "Job creation".

CFRM - Two statements the DFO released on their "Seal Hunt Myths" web page are the following. First regarding seals being a danger to fish stocks. "Several factors have contributed to the lack of recovery of the Atlantic cod stocks such as fishing effort, poor growth and physical condition of the fish and environmental change." Humans decimated the cod, not seals. You don't cure the problem of killing too much with more killing. No studies have conclude a cull of seals is needed. (Cont. in #6)

#6 Further the DFO has also stated that the seal hunt is not a cull. If indeed future studies would reveal a cull is necessary to protect the environment then fine, let them cull the adult seals, just like they do the adult deer.

in other animals like fishing the guts are not used only the sides/ fillet and they rest are terned into compost. chicken intestines and other parts are waisted as well, as to cows and pigs i think they make salomi or somthing with them. but as for the meat the exess could be sent to africa for starving children. that wil help with the food waist. and no one clubs bambi becouse you can't get close. you can't shoot seal becouse when the bullet hits their is a chance it will go back into the sea1

sending meat to africa isnt a really good idea, its hot there and they have very little electricity or money to buy the fridge. the aid is mostly always cereals bars rich in protein or corn.
I dont think they waste chicken intestines. you never know whats in your hot dog.

Update - In case you haven't heard, the Farley Mowat crew members that were charged in regards to the April 2008 incident were found guilty earlier this month and will be sentenced on September 10th, 2009.
Video and radar evidence proved they were in Canadian waters.

You'll notice that these "activists" never mention global warming whenever they pitch the eco-tourism idea.
Apparently they think that if the hunt ended that the ice flows would magically stop melting, so that the tourists could visit them.
BTW, the 2007 ice conditions they use as an example were isolated to the Gulf of St. Laurence, where only 30% of pups were born. The front, where 70% of seals are born, had thicker than usual ice that year.

Harp seals are abandoned by their mothers around 2 weeks of age. Baby harp seals have to learn virtually everything about survival by themselves. If they aren't slaughtered by hunters first.

Something about this has been bugging me and I just figured out what it is.
WHERE ARE THE ADULT SEALS WHILE THIS SLAUGHTER IS GOING ON? I have NEVER heard of ANY other mammals in the wild that will sit by passively while their young are slaughtered like this. The ferocity of mothers of any species is legendary. Males either protect their young and mates, or else the whole herd. So why don't we see the seals fighting back?

The seal hunt is an essential part to the ecosystem.If that guy is bringing up global warming,it won't just be the seal that would be affected,but also the natural preditors, esspecially the Polar Bear.Not only that,as the host stated,the seal population is higher than it was in the 70's,and inorder to feed the increasing population,the seal are consuming the fish around the area at an incredible rate.Eventually,the seals MAY eat themselves back to the endangered list.
