  • I have head people saying FX will replace DX since 2009. It hasn't happened yet and probably never will. The camera manufactures like charging a premium for full frame cameras too much to finally admit that using a full frame sensor doesn't really add that much to cost to build the camera.

  • do you recommend the 17-55 f2.8 compare to 24-70 f2.8 for me with a nikon D7000 body. anyway I am not sure WHEN or WILL I'm goin full frame. And any thougths for the sigma and tamron 17-50 f2.8 coz their cheaper compare to nikon. Thanks Leigh! =)

  • @abybryan For DX, like the D7000, I much prefer the ability to get the wider angles with the 17-55.

  • So in do time are we not going to be able to use the DX lens on an FX cameras. If so I will only buy FX lens than I hope not because I have a few DX lens's. also the 20-70 F2.8 and 70-200 F2.8 are insane lens i would buy them in a heart beat. My uncle has both he use them on the D300

  • 14-24mm nikkor, will cover almost same range on a crop sensor (~22-40mm) those other few mm not covered by the 17-55mm DX lens can be covered with two feet (also focuses very close), the 24-70 is like a ~38-112mm which is kind of an awkward range, and the 14-24 is FX for future upgrades.. no need to invest in fine glass if it isn't going to be used with future bodies and no need to bind yourself to crop sensors when the alternative is compatible with DX and FX and eliminates vignetting on DX

  • @3antaralhatab I go with what I enjoy using for the gear I have in my hands now.

  • I'm currently shooting with a Nikon d300s. In a couple years I would like to be able to say that I own the Nikon D4.

If you know that you're going to move to FX eventually, would you still say get the 17-55mm in the meantime? I probably wouldn't use it again after getting my D4 and I dunno what it would be worth by that time.

Also, do you think the range of the 24-70 would work well for portraiture on a DX until I move to FX?

  • @aberturepriority Personally, I would not enjoy the 24-70 on a DX camera. I use the wider range of the 17-55mm very often.

  • I own the 17-55 and the D90. Perhaps I have some bias as a result but I agree with the points you make. I find that the 17-55 serves my needs very well on the wide end. I've heard great things about the 24-70 and will give it serious consideration if and when I step up to FX.

  • wats the diffrnce betwn

    18-55 & 17-55

  • @vnk956 18-55 = variable aperture. 17-55 = f2.8 through the range.

  • @TheSnapChick "Would you buy a 36-105 for FX?" I have the 24-70 on one body and the 70-200 on the other when shooting (gridwalks and pitlane). I just think buying glass outside of the dream team is just redundant unless there is a special requirement for it (ie tilt shift or DC).

  • @TerribleWone I guess I'm just not understanding how 24-70 is a 'dream' focal length for both DX and FX. When you're using it on DX, it's the equivalent of 36-105 on FX. If 24-70 is magical on FX, 17-55 is the equivalent focal length on DX.

  • Other than that of course a full-frame lens (there is a world outside of Nikon's proprietary DX and FX words, so to answer this non-manufacturer-specific question, you should use the common words ;) ) is better, when you want to leave the option out to LATER upgrade to a full-frame. That question can only be answered personally by the buyer. ... Oh by the way, Nikons big lenses (read: 70-200 F2.8) are really all black? Unsexy ;)...

  • I don't think industry is moving to fullframe sometime soon - on the contrary, its going away from it (SLRs were "fullframe" earlier, only with DSLRs the APC-S really started). And the mirrorless are also smaller, the biggest mirrorless sensors are in the Sony NEX and the Samsung NX, which both have the APS-C. The choice between 17-50/55 or 24/28-70 isin my opinion the choice of whether you need wide angle indoors more often or not. With 24mm (x 1,5) you seldom get decent indoor total shots

  • So much for your videos. An ad for LG appears 15 seconds in and does not go away nor can I force it to go away. It completely blocks your video which is greyed out behind it.

  • I am sorry SnapChick 24-70mm have way better bokeh then 17-55mm!

  • @bbqboy70 Which one(s) do you own or use?

  • @TheSnapChick I do own 24-70mm and I used the 17-55mm before. I agree the range on 17-55 on dx is better for most people. However for wedding shoot on dx or fx this is a better lens for me. I simply use more tele lens then wide maybe. I mostly shoot prime anyway. Other then fast prime lens, this is one of my fav gold ring.

  • @bbqboy70 I tend to push the wider end of the 17-55. So much of lens choice comes down to personal shooting style. For me, I would feel constrained at 24mm. Honestly, though, I'm usually carrying two bodies at an event with various lenses based on the event/venue.

  • But what happened to the lighting setup in this video?! Not the same flattening light we are used to see in your videos. PS. In this range for DX I would also go for the Tamron 17-50/2.8 non-VC that is awesome and rather cheap.

  • @philip5video Hi Philip - webcam video :)

  • omg marry me. great channel btw love your videos

  • @mikey7123 Thanks :)

  • Gearfaggotry...

  • @radynnn I love that word! Plus, it's fun to say :)

  • @TheSnapChick Don't you feel lonely sometimes?

  • @radynnn Because it's just me and the lenses in the video?

  • @TheSnapChick Consider to add some people to your videos.

  • @radynnn Then you might like some of the videos I'll be making today. Nicole Renee is coming to the studio. She appears in several of my past videos and some that I have done for the Lincoshop channel :)

  • @TheSnapChick Sounds good :)

  • @TheSnapChick And more photos too. It's like you and some kind of gear all the time.

  • @radynnn My site is packed with photos. :)

  • <3 <3 <3

  • @richardhaw :)

  • "moving to full frame" - Will they fit a 35mm sensor into a consumer camera though?

  • @Maxsdiscos Probably, at some time in the future. Also, the current offerings (D700 and D3 series) will depreciate and be available used at very low prices in 5 years. Personally, I think about today.

  • oh damn you are so very cute and fine, but I'm poor, oh dear sh*t happens :(

  • @sweetypie000 Feeling better every day.

  • An argument can be made to buy the best glass you can afford. If you plan to move to FX in the future having high-end FX glass means you don't have to sell your old DX glass with the hope of making enough to get FX glass.

  • @harrybean2006 In my case, giving up the 17-23mm range would not be "best" with my shooting style.

  • My goal for my D7000 is 10-24, 24-70, 70-200. I already have the 70-200.

  • oh baby still working for us despite Bronchitis, get well soon!

  • I've also d90 and 24-70. I miss a little the wide end but the glass is really awesome. I'd go 24-70 anytime again!

  • It will be a mistake if he goes full frame anytime in the future...

  • @vcbabis For me and my style, it would be a mistake to shoot the equivalent of 36-105 on DX with the 24-70. I use the wide end of the 17-55 quite often.

  • Sorry for my english, that's what happens if your dutch :-) Great vid again, love to see your enthousiasm about photography. :-)

  • I'm using the 24-70 on my D90 and it stays on ther 90% of the time. I asked myself the same question when i bought it. Changing to FX iin about 1 to 2 yrs made me choose for the 24-70. Ive allso got the 70-200 and gonna buy the 14-24 when i have the money for it. The best threesome out there! (lenswise that is :P )

  • i agree with a fair bit of the comments saying that the 24-70 is probably a better buy for the future but if you do video of any sort, having VR is important and there are not many fast lenses with VR in this focal range.

  • I agree the 17-55 is great however, I like to switch it up sometimes and use the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X for some super wide landscape. It also works well when I'm shooting automotive rig photos. Great video! :)

  • I have the d3100 and want to get a 2.8 zoom. I'm deciding between 3 lenses, the Tamron 17-50 VC, Tamron 17-50 non-VC, and the Sigma 17-50 OS. Snap Chick, which one do you recommend?

  • @heiheij Tamron 17-50mm NON VC! sharper than the VC and cheaper too! Its not as good as the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 but for what youre paying its value for money lens.

  • @leasaunce I agree! I have that Tamron and it is awesome lens...

  • @heiheij I'm sure they all work great. I do not own either of the three.

  • i wish i can be kissed by her, just like that lens. i have been a good boy this year <3

  • @richardhaw :* XOXOXO

  • In my mind get the 24-70 because when you get your next lens 70-200 2.8 you will have all focal range covered.

  • @t2iskyler For me, I'd rather have 17-23mm covered than 55-70mm. I don't find myself trying to shoot off the long end of the 55mm nor shorter than 70mm when I'm using the 70-200. I do however, shoot the 17-55 at the wide end of its range quite often.

  • No point in 17-55, just spend the money now as in due time you will want the 24-70 regardless. The 24-70 is one of the nikon trifecta, get it and dont bother with anything lesser.

  • @TerribleWone Would you buy a 36-105 for FX?

  • Hope you feel better SnapChick!

  • @AcornBurrka Thanks! :)

  • You sound funny, do you have a cold?

  • @AdurianJ Bronchitis, baby! :)

  • @TheSnapChick

That's kind of a cool name so it's not that bad.

  • @AdurianJ :)
