They didn't die for their 'country', they died for their royal family. More specifically they died for their mighty "Emperor Showa". They died for the sake of their Empire, not for japan. In fact, when they surrendered, their largest concern was how to 'preserve the emperor's honor'. Which was to remove the imperial seal from anything it was stamped on that the allies could destroy (mostly weapons).
