  • Incredible arrangement. They take the original by George Shuffler and Carter and match, or even improve it. Well done Keith, Renfro and Ralph. I can and do listen to both versions and never tire of either one.

  • I've never seen the Blue Moon of Kentucky, I've never been far from the Río de la Plata. But I love bluegrass music since the 70s, when a now defunct agency of American Government had a Lincoln Library in Buenos Aires which lent books, LPs and cassettes for free. Long live good music!

  • I know of no bluegrassband that beats these lads for sheer class!! Their harmony and musicianship is unsurpassed in my humble opinion.

  • thank you for posting this. greatly appreciated. I've always said, "I hope I'm lucky enough to hear this music when I die."

  • the thing about harmonies is each combination of voices are unique and sadly this one is gone.

  • Bluegrass....as pure as good ol moonshine. It will never change and never die.

  • this talent can never be heard again in my opinion.

  • live long our old time music

  • Whew!

  • I can remember back to a warm summer evening at the general store listening to the ole boys down from the hills playing their hearts out. Us kids running around catching fire flies in mason jars, high as a kite on moonpies and rc colas...Life was great then in the early 70's, god where has the time gone.........

  • this just intoxicates me...i was listening to this when i was 4 yrs old. i can remember dad playing this on 8 track...awsome then and even better now. i'm a little older and can appreciate it for what it is now. but, i must say i am blessed to have been introduced to such wonder music at an early age.

  • Just awesome. Hard to beat that.

  • Bless Mom and Dad God ,Keep them in your arms. Thanks Dad for the pennies

  • i would like to hear keith and carter together that would be unbeatable

  • @rblakeblake perhaps they got together up in heaven and are making the Angels envious.

  • @rblakeblake you got my vote mabey throw john whitley in their 2

  • Such beautiful story telling.........

  • Nice! I thought Larry Sparks version was great. I guess either way it is a classic Stanley Brothers / clinch Mountain Boys tune. Good stuff!!!

  • Once a person develops a taste for this music, they are a fan for life. I am glad to see that these old recordings are still available for viewing. Keith was the best! And Ralph-- he does a great job with all his tunes. May he be around for a long time!

  • Which album can I find this stuff on with Keith?

  • @dannynanner Clinch Mountain Gospel Rebel SLP 1571 Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys

  • ralph stanley is what i grew up on my whole life.......my uncles and da picked and grinned there music my whole life and i was blessed to be able to share this type of musice!!!!! amen to bluegrass!!!

  • whats the name of the first song?

  • Wonderful. Keith Whitley was a one of the best bluegrass singers. Should have stayed with Ralph Stanley. And Curly Ray Davies!!!!

  • still gives me goosebumps to hear this ...best ever......I think Marty Stuart and his band and Del McCoury and his pickers still lay it down like it should be

  • I think this show took place the same week they recorded CLINCH MOUNTAIN GOSPEL in Lexington. This was such a great lineup--I am eternally grateful for the album for its own sake, and also as a souvenir of this band and this time. Also eternally grateful to the person who snagged this video for everyone!

  • this is music of soul. my family use to play this music every get together. amazing music from all bluegrass favs. bill monroe ralph stanley and so on. thank you for an amazing childhood

  • hey mandotoot , renfro ain't dead i just played a show with him on feb 29 2010.

  • The sad thing is that everybody on that stage is now dead except the oldest one ralph will never die.

  • @mandotoot Unless something has happened in the last few weeks, lead guitar man Renfro is still with us, His cross picking on Star Of Bethlehem, here and on the recording Clinch Mountain Gospel, is what defines the arrangement.

This guitar work just cannot be beat.

    One of Ralph's finest.

  • Renfro is not dead.

  • I'll never forget the first time I heard the first song in this set..late one night at Bean Blossom Indiana..a mist creeping up from the lake behind the stage and fireflies sparkling in the trees and Keith Whitley's AMAZING voice...I have never had goose bumps like the before or since!!

  • may jack rest in peace the mayor of norton, thanks all you music lovers.

  • He was truly amazing. I still miss his voice!

  • Just fantastic picking and singing. This version surpasses even the original Stanley brothers effort, Keith's singing is that good. It's hard for any other band to attempt this song after hearing Keith, Ralph, Renfro and Jack do it.

  • chill bumps

  • nothing keith did in country music, can touch his bluegrass music

  • Let me tell you something. You couldn't put together a finer bluegrass band than this. This kind of sound only comes around once or twice in a lifetime. RIP Keith.

  • He was a wonderful Country artist but I just love his Bluegrass

  • Does anyone know who the guy was playing lead guitar?

  • I Believe his name is Troy "Renfro" Profitt

  • jr blankenship

  • Ralph Stanley, Keith Whitley, Curley Ray Cline, Jack Cooke and Renfro Proffit from the year Nineteen Hundred And Seventy Seven

  • No that's Renfro. Jr. never played while Keith was in the band.

  • absolutly flawless man!

  • This just blows me away. This must be some of Kieth Whitley's best singing ever!

  • man your right ralph and keith are the best there aint nobody can do that.

  • This is pure, real deal music.

  • Yep, it just don't get no better than this. That's the REAL bluegrass sound.

  • thats a top flight bluegrass band

  • This is the greats of bluegrass love all keep them comming please

  • Love it!! I love bluegrass, gospel but mostly bluegrass gospel. Just makes me feel good to hear it and sing with Ralph on "Oh Beautiful Star". : )

  • nice vid..keith was such a talent, and gosh..ralph is a living legend..great stuff...

  • great video!!! my fav songs

  • Look at the way this group is dressed. Professional from the word go. None of this look like they just crawled out of a dumpster like so many acts today think is cool. Stanley, McCoury, these people know how to present a professional show. I'd pay to see them anytime.

  • ive been listening to the stanley bros since i was i was a baby i will allways love this music i remember my mom waking me up to this every morning down home i play this every day now even my kids have to here it and thank you for my autistic son whom cant speak but loves it do u have mountain dew from this show i would love to see that thank you your the best

  • Does anyone know what year or what album i can find this music on.

  • Beautiful star of Bethlehem, shine on. Thank you for sharing this, I really enjoyed it and made me homesick.

  • Amazing singing. Thank you for this great video. Keith was best at bluegrass. I discovered him decades ago when he and Ricky Skaggs came out with a bluegrass album when they were young teens. I listened to that for yearsl. Still bluegrass is his best.

  • Keith is great .I have him on reel to reel live on stage, berryville va 71,also ricky was with.Roy lee Sinners ..That band will never be beaten..BEST..Thanks for video

  • I come back and play this everyday, I am not kidding. thank you for posting.

  • This just cant be beat! i base my lead singing around keith's singing right here on this video! Ralph and the boys are so awesome during this time period!

  • youre right....Ralph and Curly were in their primes here.

  • aw man dont base your style around anyone dude....someone great once said"go get your own style", however, keith is the man to base around if your gonna!!!And i agree about this time period, only second to when ole' carter was still round....peace!!!

  • As Eddie Stubbs would say, "Are there any questions?..if there are, give me a call & let's talk it over."

There are no questions! Keith-Ralph-Curly Ray-Renfro-Jack, his best band since Carter passed on.

  • wrong...

    left to right...

curly ray cline,Junior Blankenship, Ralph Stanley, Keith Whitley, Jack Cook...

  • That aint Jr Blankenship....believe it is R Profit

  • Check out the guitar Whitley is playing..1938 D-28 that Lester Flatt gave him...Whitley could do Flatt to a "T"...

  • I think Keith is still with us in our hearts and we'll see him one day in Heaven. As for Ralph, met him and interviewed him at a festival last year, he's still good with the Clinch Mountain Boys. I used to go to school at ETSU with Todd Meed his old fiddle player.

  • my god this is the most-amazing christmas song ever!

  • Curly Ray Cline was an awesome fiddle player. Hes my cousin too, it def is hard to find video footage with him in it.

  • Curly ray seemed like a good guy. Ima big fan. I wish I could have met him.

  • Wow! This is an absolute treasure. Two of the greatest voices ever.

  • Wow! Thanks for posting..Keith Whitley...His Voice gets in more licks so smooth...RIP Keith

  • Thank You for posting this video. As a Keith Whitley fan it is awesome to find material that I have not seen before. Many thanks! Please keep them coming!

  • Thank you for this! I love Keith Whitley - especially his early bluegrass music. Ralph Stanley is awsome too but Keith is the greatest singer I have ever heard. He was truly talented and it makes me so sad that he no longer with us.

  • this is a great video. Its hard to find videos with Curly Ray Cline in them. Thanks for posting.

  • Gerry, bless you! "I've Just Seen the Rock of Ages," as Emmylou Harris once said, is one of the greatest things ever captured in the studio by any artist of any genre. And I agree wholeheartedly. This is SO much better than the record. My husband just had dental work done today, and he was grinning as he watched this. Thank you so much! Fived n' faved n' right into the KW Assoc.
