  • Man I love those percussive rhythms. So headbang-able

  • @Bagas I lol'd \m/

  • thank you friend, Bartok was someone who shaped me way back in the 1950ties

that was in the time of the Quebec start of the 'Révolution Tranquille' that we shaped then, in the next 20 years to come

  • Two years ago I heard this piece and I was like WTF... But now I'm really enjoying it.

  • @minid15 Exact same reaction.

  • has anyone heard of Maurizio Pollini's version?

  • @surfinpure Perhaps I should have said "MANY people who dislike Schoenberg". In any case, my previous comment was intended to be general rather than specific. There are some who are unwilling to give either composer the benefit of the doubt, which, IMHO, is THEIR loss.

  • @Varese13: I don't know about that. I love most of Bartok's music but I generally can't stand to listen to Schoenberg.

  • @surfinpure as do I =)

  • 15oldmen: He has a real desire to communicate w the audience ( that is very much lacking in , say, schoenberg).

This is a falsehood which cannot be allowed to stand. All composers wish to communicate. It is a fact that people who dislike Schoenberg also dislike Bartok for the same reasons. Both composers refused to compromise their artistic vision. They wrote to appeal to listeners, but listeners must be willing to open their ears and hearts in order to receive the messages they send.

  • HELLO! can anyone recommend other good bartok movements/music. I love this one, thanks!

  • @Simon0

The string quartets--particularly the performances by the Alban Berg Quartett on EMI

  • @MrNobleSavagery thanks ill give them a listen.

  • anyuone know any good books with analysis of the first movement? (i got an essay on this)

  • This is the recording that made me fall in love with Bartók's music. It's still one of my favourites. This music seems to me to strike to the heart of what music is about: sheer vitality, unrestrained energy and invention.

  • 1:51 I LOVE IT!!!

  • It's awesone *_*

  • Absolutely his best, w #2 showing his neo-classical side. This brings back memories for me too, when

i bought the Tatrai's second string quartet at 14, and finding my absolute favorite composer. He has a real desire to communicate w the audience ( that is very much lacking in , say,

schoenberg). Also, he is the best twentieth century writer for strings, w Penderecki second.

  • Yes, lot of thanks for the post!

(But: "Béla" is his first name, not "Belá")

  • Fixed :)

  • This was reviewed after it's first performance as being 'unmitigated ugliness' ...

I'm quite proud of the fact I first heard this as a 14 year old and I loved it!

  • Bartók (once?) said that some o his most apprecative listeners were the young (he used to play for schoolkids etc). Ears/mind more open, less conditioned.

    Good on you btw ;)

  • @IncaRoad01 i only heard the hwole movement just now and i love it. I might have to listen to some other bartok. (i had to analyse the first three minutes for my essay so at first i didnt listen beyond that)

  • i find this forceful...but was wondering what you rate asa 'definitive' performance recording.?.i have a donnohue and a pascal roge find the latter more strident and moving than the former...would be grateful for any thoughts

  • this is great, esa pakka salonen's also grrrreat

Jeno Jando also great... there are a lot of good ones.....

  • Wild,, savage, expressionistic

  • gr8 concerto...thanks for the post.

  • You're welcome
