  • Ustad Bismillah Khan was a truly amazing musician in an age when many calling themselves musicians are mere mannikins by comparison. Ustad Khan tapped into a space and sound that is close to God. In doing so he spoke to everyone with a sound art that touches the deepest realms of the soul. A humble vessel and a great man.

  • So... beautiful!! Keya batt, wah!! :D

  • what a treasure!

  • Amayzing video; ancientdictator, well spotted, yes, I think it is Zakirhussain on Tabla, many years ago!

Aadaaab to ustadji for twanging the divine chords in our heart. Must be playing in Zannat(heavens) now I am sure!

  • the tabla player has to be Nazim Hussain

  • @cenkjeekhan Tabla player is Zakir Hussein !!!

  • @tampaerotic05 absolutely not. bismillah khan had his own tabla player. i dont remember guy's name, but its certainly not zakir ji. khansahab ko allah jannat bakshe. what a saint.

  • @shankyxyz The great Khansaheb's youngest son on the tabla, his apple of the eye and ye did he smoke and how? I met him once for an early morning interview for The Times of India (in 1985) and he had to be woken up from bed at a hotel in Lamington Road in Bombay and he was in dressed in a sleeveless traditional vest and shorts! Started the day tousle-haired and unshaven by lighting up a beedi and ordering tea all around...I was accompanied by the photographer Jitendra Arya who shot this

  • @cenkjeekhan yah, its definatley not Zakir Hussain

  • @urologist108 It is not Zakir at all.

But I guess somepeople think all brown guys with long hair who play the tabla are Zakir.

  • @urologist108 that is not zakir h.

  • People say Jazz musicians are talented...now these guys can play!

I can listen to this all night..reminds me of quality metal. They are similar in their construction.

    Any other recommendations?

    -N.

  • Love your comment- I've played jazz on sax for 50 years- nothing we do with our ego-based jazz can ever come close to the Ustad and his blessed soul and massive talent..... his music is from inside..... I listen all night as well- then practice in the morning on my shehnai... wish I could have met him.... aren't we blessed!

  • Devi Saraswati must have given him sakshatkar.

  • Raag malkauns is my favorit of all... whether vocal by Ustad bade Ghulam ali khan, or Pandit Bhimsen Joshi... by Parveen Sultana or Lata Mangeshkar nobody can spoil it

  • How proud and lucky those were who met and watched Ustad Bismillah Khan walking on the earth.

    What a great Legend?

  • Agreed. I was fortunate enough to hear Ustadji in performance many years ago as a child. His recordings are still amongst my favorites. The world is a poorer place for his loss.

  • is that (somehow) zakir hussain on tabla?

  • what do you mean he is true muslim and conquered by islam? he is a true human and he is conquered by humanity as well then. how many true muslim worship goddess saraswati because of his devotion to music? not many and these people are real scular because they respect other religions and understand the philosophy and spirituality behind it. but yes, he is a great person. i respect him a lot.

  • PRICELESS !!

    I SALUTE YOU USTADJI !!

  • I wish I had met him in person.... Shat shat naman!

  • This song is composed by Ghantasala, a singer of the south and a renowned music director. He is amazingly talented as well and only used Bismillah khan as the soundtrack in his movies. God bless souls as talented as them, they really are reverberating the sounds of the divine through their music.

Tears flow out of my eyes when I hear such divine music. Music is the true religion.

  • i bow to the divine musician!

He is complete embodiment of music!

  • jai ho ustad ji

  • indian classical music isnt about religion. u have to respect every religion to be a musician.u cant believe in raheem and not in ram or the vice versa. a musician is of all religion and most importantly a human

  • @parveensabrinakhan beautifully said bahan - I hope you are heard everywhere...

  • May god return him to India with Shehnai once again. Awesome musician.

  • Brilliancy personified..! No comparisons...!

  • I wish i could play my shenai....this is so beautiful

  • Excelent Raga!

    Namaste

  • Bless Bismillah Khan forever- his music can heal us all. Thank you for this incredible posting!

  • Raag Malkauns plays at the weddings...god..thats why this is so touching..

i used to hear this at the wedding ceremonies...

  • Khan had the rare honor of performing at Delhi's Red Fort on the eve of India's Independence in 1947. Though a Muslim, he was also, like many indian musicians, regardless of religion, a devotee of Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of wisdom and arts, and often played at Hindu temples, including the famous Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, on the banks of the river Ganga.

  • He was the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (in 2001), the highest civilian honour in India.

The Government of India declared a day of national mourning on his death. His body along with a Shehnai was buried at Fatemain burial ground of old Varanasi under a neem tree with 21-gun salute from Indian Army. A GREAT MUSLIM - A GREAT INDIAN. INDIA SALUTE U..

  • If he was a devotee of Saraswati, then he wasn't a true Muslim was he? At least that's what a lot of orthodox Muslims would say.

  • I wouldnt call them orthodox- they r just relegious followers - do not necessarly know the meaning of god

  • Maybe they don't care either. Who knows. Whatever they want to do is their choice. Nobody should force anyone else to be or do something they don't want to do or believe. If he wants to be Hindu, fine. If he wants to be a Muslim, fine. If he wants to be a Jain, fine. If he wants to be a Christian, fine. If he wants to be a Buddhist, fine. If he wants to be a Sikh, fine. If he doesn't want to be anything, fine. It's all about personal choice.

  • don't the orthodox, what do you think yourself

  • Heavenly Music. I prefer this over Michael Jackson anytime.

  • Superb. thanks for posting.

  • This is superb - Thank you for sharing the genius of Ustaadji

  • shia n haider , jannat nasheen !!!

  • LAFZ USTAAD KISAY KEHTAIN HAIN MULAHIZA FARMAIYAY in ki death par govt of india nay quomi parcham sarnigoon rakha tha IZAT MILAY TOU EISEE MILAY SUBHANALLAH

  • Ustaad Bismillah Khaan, the greatest shenai vadak to have graced this planet. A true Bharat Ratna

  • how did you do all this

  • he has a majic in his shehnai

  • no body would have known shenai w/o bismillah ... would be surprised if anybody could carry his legacy ..

  • absolute genius. master's master. shehnai will never be bettered

  • there is No words to say but it is to good

  • I just can't quite believe how amazing this is.

  • Loved this. Khan saheb's expressions. The clips of him walking around Banaras and saying dua. Beautifully done video.

He was always humble and loving. Never one for making pots of money. Completely dedicated to his art.

  • Gangsta of shanahi!!!The best!!!

  • wah(wow) janab

  • Great, simply great,

  • how can you call the drone an annoyance!

  • this is amazing!!!!

    who is playing the tabla???

  • I love the Shehnai, I love this Raga (being a late night person who talks to the djinn) and the Ustad is simply sublime. I love him too.

madhwa123: while I agree with you, I think this will catch up with them on the other side, or the next time around, depending on your/their beliefs.

    guitarguy1381: Regarding Indian music...

The door is just opening for you!

    The pool is there,

    the water is warm,

    dive on in!

  • how do you speak with the jinn?

  • one in century

    baloch japan

  • makes me melt

  • May Allah bless his soul and give him the highest level in Paradise.

  • I think he's outstanding. Just wish his accompanying students would stop playing a monotone while he improvises. It really doesn't add anything more than annoyance to the improvisation.

  • The shehnai can be played by an individual but Usatd Bismillah Khan used his troup to play the drone and also the melody when he needed a breather.

The annoyance that you beautifully mentioned is so much of hid sound that we heard for years and years. That was his trademark.

    May

  • Looks like you are new to Classical music. Checkout again there is no taanpura, the monotone Sehnai serves as a drone and is essential for him to play.

  • Nostalgic. Indeed a maestro

  • What a pity that he had to pass through such dire state in the end. Whereas bollywood nonsense actors are paid in corores of rupees for some cheap show, such great people have to pass their lives in utter poverty.

  • He is really a maestro! Bharat Ratna

  • good?

    that's an understatement

    a HUGE understatement

  • Good

  • Ustad Bismillah Khan is not only a great master of the Shanai but was asked by Ghandi Ji to play the British out of India at the Red Fort in 1947.

  • is dat zakir h. on tabla? crazzy! spiritual! rare!

  • no, that is not zakir hussain on tabla

  • oh yea thnx for replying..

i did find that out later by watching closely lolz

no doubt he is good. reason: bcoz hes doing it for gr8 Bismillah Khan =D Awesome

but at first sight he does look like zakir.. no offence =P

  • hehe yes^^ the tabla player has to be Nazim Hussain i think

  • High Spirit !!

Salute to the great maestro, The Ustad.

  • the first time I heard of bismillah khan was a duet in geneva switzerland with violin dr. l subramanium.... with tabla and mridangam accompanyments....

  • I was there I was amazed to listen to a 88+yrs. old blowing that Shenai That is what I called a maestro,

You were a lucky person, as I consider myself My CD which I bought was borrrowed by somebody who never returned.

  • do you have a video of that concert? I have been looking for that for many years now. I would really appreciate it if someone could post that video. Its a fantastic concert and what a jugalbandhi!!!! LS and Bismillah Khan at a sublime level. Geneva was shook to its foundations!

  • lovley concert in Geneva.... I have never heard a more pleasing showcase of tabla and mridangam.... the percussion steals the show!!

as for a video of this, I am not entirely sure.... and unfortunately my cd version is in storage now and I can not presently access the liner notes.... this cd is certainly worth and investigation....

  • i love how he has a smoke after and is walking with his followers!

  • out of the world experience.

  • I justs got a shehnai, how do you do that low-high-low sound when they first start playing? I don't even see his fingers moving

  • wah ustaad ji kya baat hai ...

  • lifts my spirit to a next level everytime i hear his shehnai or whever i think of this simple and humble soul. many many applauds for all his accompanying artists. they are just superb! thank you for sharing this video.

  • A music which is intellectually very graceful.

  • Brilliant

  • A great musician and a "GREAT MAN".

  • yes he is

  • his reaction to the tabla playing from 1:50 o 2:00 is really nice to watch!

  • vein801 this is Malkauns and not chandrakouns the nikhad used is not shudh but komal you can hear it clearly during the evolution and very clearly in the part SA NI SA DHA when it comes one the sam of teentaal IT IS MALKAUNS see you soon friend

  • Actually friends... This is chandrakauns raag...not malkauns... Just for clarification :-)
