That's a stupid argument. First off nearly everybody drinks alcohol and not everybody dies from it. Who knows what the casualty list would be if everybody took LSD in the same numbers as those that drink? Maybe he and a few intellectuals enjoyed LSD (they don't take it now for some reason) but what about all the casualties? Syd Barrett? I took it once and had panic attacks from it for YEARS after. Don't listen to this fat bellied has-been trying to relive his glory days. LSD is for the stupid.
@dharmashooter Well LSD may not be for everyone, but that is still not a reason for it to be illegal. LSD should be used not in a recreational way but in more of a spiritual way. It should be used as a tool for expanding your mind, and to find true enlightenment. I believe that if you're comparing the dangers of LSD to alcohol there are far more dangers with drinking. Not just the mental dangers but also physical. You can put your body through a lot of harm when you're drunk.
ME? I enjoy being part of this exclusive club....come on, I mean look how conservative and square america has become.....worse than the '50's.....of course they are afraid we might trip and then " learn something they don't"....its always been the case....I will be content to go off into the woods and "do my thing" with the shroom or the liquid.
@jackleberryfinn yes, he does... a reference to albert hofmann, the swiss chemist who first synthesized lsd in the late 1930s, ran experiments on it, spoke highly of its medical benefits, and later warned the public not to use it so freely.
@drvn8 Thx. I know Albert Hofmann. I was just wondering whether Kesey really claims him to be "afraid" of the substance. Having read Hofmann's book on LSD and his discovery, I did not get the impression of Hofmann being afraid, but simply wanting people to treat it carefully and not to abuse it for hedonistic purposes only.
I'm just confused by when someone says the truth so straight forward, 99% of people that hear it just look through it and go back to being a slave.... poor bastards...
I love it when drug addicts bring up the alcohol related accidental or other type of deaths :) and they really think that alcohol is much worst than drugs :) What a reatarded idiots ...
Classic, the fact of the matter is that alcohol causes alot of damage to the body. it affects every organ in the body (liver, brain, stomach, skin) because it is a poison. LSD is NOT a poison, it is not toxsic to the body and so travels through without harm. plus alot more people get violent from drinking than they do from LSD, but then again thats proberly due to the type of ignorant people who drink alcohol and belive its the "safe option.
Well, I used to do LSD back in the mid 90's and I remember that during my trip and the following day I could not fix up my body and soul with nutrients or a simple 8hour sleep. I really hope that you understand how much damage LSD can cause over your trip (24 + hrs)

nick and 49'er...............in summary I just want to say to you that "it is all cool" and "I'm with you man" every step of the way................In celebration I'm gonna go listen to a song with the words, "if you're going to San Francisco, make sure you wear flowers in your hair." I might even put my tie dye t-shirt on before I listen to this amazing, evocative song. {Know what I learned from psychedelics? It is ALL bullshit {including Kesey}. None of IT means shit. Narcissism.
That song was written by John Phillips down in LA & sung by a guy who had nothing to do with SF. It's a catchy tune but just cash in Hype that had nothing to do with the real scene in SF which wasn't
Flower Power but the perfect AM tourist tune for someone like you who doesn't have a clue what the real thing was.
If it didn't mean anything you wouldn't have said anything let alone try to be old sage of 60's wisdom. Kesey wasn't ALL bullshit but you sure are. I'll give ya that.
I like Kesey but he's "full of it." My best friend from Jr High School "flipped out" at Blair Academy in New Jersey and has been institutionalized for over 40 years. Another friend who scored 1500 on his SAT's and was accepted at Yale put his head through a door his Senior year in high school..never went to college and ended up sweeping floors in the Portland Me Post Office. I had a number of BAD trips where I thought I'd lost my mind. LSD was NOT benign. Believe me. Alot of casualties.
This was in the late 60's and early 70's. I don't know about "jumping into the deep end of the pool." I'm from a priviledged background. I'd say quite the opposite. After about 1971 the LSD became quite adulterated. Prior to that it was powerful and pure. If you had a "bad trip" you had a "bad trip." I saw where Kesey said on the Tom Snyder show years ago after being asked, "did LSD harm you at all?" His answer, "sure. There are pros and cons to everything. Acid too."
Ever read Tom Wolfe's book "The Electric Koolaid Acid Test?" If you had you'd know Kesey and the Pranksters certainly didn't do any "prep." They were out having a good time. Certainly most of the people at the Acid Tests watching the Dead didn't do much "prep." Leary's crowd in Millbrook New York did alot of "prep." They were into the whole LSD "experience." When the Pranksters met up with the Learyites in Millbrook it didn't go off too well because their whole philosophy was opposite.
Yep your right we didn't prep & not everyone passed the test but your story is yours & not mine & my friends & a whole lot of other people I know who did..
Your Snyder-Kesey quotes is not what was said or how it was said. It's on Utube if you want to hear what Tom asked & what Ken really did say & how he said it.
I would certainly not advise anyone to use hallucinogenic drugs. I think they can lead a happy and productive life without them. There were/are alot of casualties from that period. This is fact. If you don't or won't acknowledge this then that says something about you.
So I do acknowledge that. Just like I acknowledge that like me & mine who did there are many people I know who lead happy & produtive lives without ever getting high on anything. I also didn't advise anyone to do anything except for you to look at what Snyder-Kesey really did say because your Quote is not what was said & your putting your words in his mouth. What does that say about you?
In the interview Kesey says {and I paraphrase} in answer to a question or observation by Snyder "everything you put in your body has positive and negative effects." Unfortunately Kesey {who I find to be intelligent and interesting} was cut off by Jerry "bigmouth" Garcia who couldn't wait to get his inane comments out there. I left the interview at that point, because I could see that the interesting and insightful person {Kesey} was going to be drowned out by the insipid twosome.
I saw the whole interview so I don't need you to paraphrase in Quotes.
You not knowing anything that was said from the time U left the interview is what U don't know & I do. So big mouth, spare me your inane & insipid comments. That are again, all about U.. Your story is not Key-z or Garcia or Me & Mine who were there at the time years before that book you read came out. Whole lot of folks way smarter than you & me don't agree with U about Garcia. That's a fact.
You seem to be proud of your time in that era. I'm 56 now and have a very different viewpoint on "the Pranksters" and Leary and Andy Warhol and "Captain Trips" and the "60's" etcetera. If there was a more banal and vapid group of people I'm not sure where they might have come from. I wouldn't be too proud of having done alot of acid and mescaline. I'm not sure that is a great accomplishment. All those people are old or gone now. I still race my bicycle and look 40 yrs old. See ya.
"You seem to be proud." he says so he can say " I wouldn't be too proud of having done a lot of acid and mescaline.".
Once again U put words in someone else's mouth as a spring board for more about U. U don't have to put words in anyone's mouth to toss out your opinion.
One thing for sure none of them did anything that had anything to do with U
I'm sure Kesey who was a Division-1 Athlete would be as impressed as me who played on teams in seven different sports that U can ride a bicycle.
"Leary's crowd..did alot of "prep." They were into the whole LSD "experience."
If you knew what you were talking about you'd know Kesey & MP's were into the Whole LSD experence. They took it Further Farther Louder & Higher with no antiseptic clinical restraints rules boundaries or walls like the one around Millbrook getting in the way of endless possibilities that were out there to be experienced if you had the guts balls to blow past it & Kesey & Co. from the Wild West did in Amazing ways
Hey Kid-Kesey never said LSD was benign. I looked, what were you maybe 16 when the 60's ended? Where was your "viewpoint on "the Pranksters" and Leary and Andy Warhol and "Captain Trips" and the "60's" etcetera" from kid? For you to call Kesey "full of it"?. Talk about banal and vapid.
I was very hip. I'm sure you weren't doing much at 16, but I gave up acid by the time I was 19. I was doing things at 14 that other "kids" were doing at 17 or 18. I was what you'd call a "cool dude." {Ha!Ha!} By the way I was at St Paul's School in Concord N.H. at that time and then Bowdoin College in Brunswick Me. later on. Look'em up. Pretty good schools. All I can say to you is, "oh wow man. The acid tests. " I've got my tie dye tee shirt on and my "bell bottoms." Edie Sedgwick. {Ha!Ha!}
Just as I thought some kid far away from the Action who glorified his Hero's from afar as he demonizes them now.
"I'm sure you weren't doing much at 16." says the shit talking prep-school punk from N,H. on his way to Me.
Kid, you heard songs & read books about things I was doing in California when I 16.
Which was years before you & your preppy buddies where scaring yourself on acid.He says."I was very hip" for where for when with who? Shit talking square from nowhere is what you are.
End of 65 I was 16 on a Surfing Safari to the famous So-Cal breaks south into Baja Mexico TJ & Ensanada on the way back we stopped at The Sunset Strip where The Riot that Stills later wrote For What It's Worth was going on. Few weeks later was at Kesey's Trip Festival at Longshoremen's Hall in SF a few months after I saw a new band born in the same town as me called The Warlocks who had changed their name to The Grateful Dead. I saw more in that few weeks at 16 than U did the whole decade
This one's classic. "I'm sure you wern't doing much at 16." When I was 16 everyone I knew wanted to leave SF Bay & California coast to go where St. Paul's school was in N.H. where it was At..
You knew nothing then and you know nothing now about Any of the people you talk shit about. mindless moron.
We did stuff out here when I was 16 that you read about but you didn't have a clue then or now what it was. Kesey used to say "Always gonna be more dumb people than smart people." He was right.
Did your parents buy you a subscription to Rolling Stone? Is that why you where a 'cool dude" in Concord N.H?
Anyone who was Hip knew they were all Human then. I didn't have to find out they weren't. Groupie kids like you who Worshiped from afar did. I saw all the people you mentioned Live in Action by the time I was 16. You had your glorified child Myth I was working with reality.
None of it matters now though Nick, does it? Dylan said it best, "Don't follow leaders. Watch the parking meters." I despise.................absolutely despise most of the people I used to adore. Keith Richard? Dried up prune. Bob Dylan? Just an old man who's tried to "recapture that moment" for the past 30 years. {Tend your garden Bob and shut up.} I'm fair Nick. I hate everybody. Liberals. Conservatives. Old hipsters. Young hipsters. Rappers. Rockers. Leaders. Followers.
Guess you were to young & too square to take Dylan's advice at the time. You can climb into your asshole & hate all you want. Just don't think anyone is going to be impressed by the foul stink of it..
Dylan : just a old man who's tried to "recapture that moment" forr the last 30 years"? Over the last 30 years Dylan among other things has received 10 Grammy's & an Academy Award.
I saw him a few weeks ago in Berkeley, which might not have been Concord NH in the 60's but it had it's moments, and the place was packed with people of all types & ages into the moment.
Riiiight. So winning Grammy awards and academy awards(whatever the hell THAT means) is really a measure of a mans worth is it? So public consnensus wins again. Yeah, your a real guru. Hey Cheech,if you switch over to CNN in about five minutes you should be able to catch Bog Dylan shilling out for Victorias Secret. Who knows? Maybe even Mastercard. The good old days are over old man. Don't sully the ideological well with hero worship. If it was true then,it's lies now. Such is time.
"So winning Grammy awards and academy awards(whatever the hell THAT means) is really a measure of a mans worth is it?"
No I don't think so. You might, and to each their own but I don't and like hero worship I've never been into that that stuff. That was true for me then & now but get off on you need & want.
LSD can reveal the illusory aspect of the ego & blows peoples facades away.
Sometimes if one is left with who they are with out Ego & Facade they freak out.
Me & my friends got I reckon as High as you & your friends & none of us freaked out & went crazy. We all had a few scary trips but nothing we couldn't get through.
I can see reading what you wrote that if you don't have your Ego & Facade there's nothing. No wonder you thought your lost your mind; With out it to hold you up U did.
That's a stupid argument. First off nearly everybody drinks alcohol and not everybody dies from it.
