I just cannot believe that they would allow such a steep slope off a corner like that after such a long straight? who the hell designs these tracks?? no wonder it came off so badly, if there was a clean flat area there would have been no chance for the front corner to drop suddenly and grab that way!
i just read his story...may i say he is a good writer, he depicted every detail and i literally saw this while i read, well glad he walked out with only a bump on his head hope he get out there again
If he didnt turn in, the accident would have been far less dramatic. Because he turned in, the car started rolling, and if he went straight into the tire wall, it may have hurt a bit more, but he would have had a greater chance for surviving it.
Great news that he walked away, the accident looked horrific.

I hate to say it but this accident probably could have been prevented. There had to have been some telltale sign that should have shown up in one of the inspections. Brakes don't just fail out of nowhere. (wet spot on a line/ caliper, bubble on a line etc, even old fluid...)
Brakes with ABS can fail without warning. All it takes is a dirty signal from the wheel sensor. Yes this car had ABS. As well a master cylinder could go bad as well with no evidence. A wheel bearing can take a crap and cause a brake failure. In Racing failures can happen without warning.
rkj4107 maybe there are some things you don't know all about.
I saw the aftermath of this one.....he flipped at least 10-12 times, flipped completely over the safety fence and almost over the secondary fence. very scary accident, driver made it out okay though I believe?
Saw the pictures... As a driver, I always get a sick feeling when I see that. As a corner worker, it makes me think hard about being prepared. Reports are the driver is ok. Glad to hear it.

Glad the driver is ok. Did he ever pinpointed what caused the brake failure?
rocketpunch12210 3 years ago
Bad front wheel bearing caused a faulty reading by the ABS computer.

I was thinking the exact same thing man... my dad races in SCCA as well and showed me this shocking crash. I'm glad that your okay!

Couldnt belive he went through the tire barrier and the big fences and then another fence into the spectator area..
balang47 3 years ago
Looks like he hit the brakes too late, but that could be because they were not working, evidence being the wobble before the screech.

That's it? No video after it flipped? Glad he's OK, but the vid is disappointing.

WOW! Glad to know all was well in the end... 'cept for the car of course. Going for a ride through China Beach is never a good day.

Saw the tail end of this working corner 9.
Incredibly glad to hear Jeff survived literally unscathed.
Kicker774 3 years ago
Yes it was a brake failure. Jeff was ok only a small bump on his fore head. He got out of the car on his own and walked to the ambulance.
