When Peter I refused to lend support to the Cossacks against the Poles, the treaty was nullified by the Tsar, and released Mazepa from any obligation to the Tsar.
Kuban Cossacks serve sovereign Great Russia along with every other cossack host whether they be Don, Kuban, Kalmyk etc. Not one host will ever fight for the Ukraine. The ones living in eastern Ukraine are loyal to Russia and fight for it alone. They sent miltias to fight along side Russian forces in Georgian conflict and even cossacks in the Ukraine wish to enter cossack units in Russia army. They will even fight against the Ukraine.

It was taught as an official language at the Mohyla Academy in Kiev and the University of Lviv (among others) at various periods since at least the 17th Century.

I admit to early ignorance about Mazepa, and decided to research him. It appears the only Ukrainians labeling him a traitor are Russianphiles of questionable loyalty to the Ukrainian Republic. As to whether he broke any oath, a treaty obligates both parties to the treaty. When Peter I refused to lend support to the Cossacks against the Poles, the treaty was nullified by the Tsar, and released Mazepa from any obligation to the Tsar.

So if you would bring "Ukrainian" through the same spelling reform, you would probably see how it's the same language with the same syntax, same letters and just a few different words which also understandable from a Russian point of view.

I agree the work "Ukrainian" doesn't appear in the literature until the 19th century. But the term Ruthenian is absolutely present in older literature. It was taught as an official language at the Mohyla Academy in Kiev and the University of Lviv (among others) at various periods since at least the 17th Century.

RUSSKAYA PRAVDA was written by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise and it is mentioned in the Primary Chronicles. Russia is a Latinized variant of the term Rus' first used in Kiev. The term Rus was displaced in the North by KIEVAN and LITTLE RUSSIAN scholars after Perejaslavl to displace the use of the term Rus' which never fully passed from used there but had continuous transmission from Kiev. While Novgorod was a city in the North during the Kievan era which never fell to conquest.

I did not say Poland had a war with Napoleon, what I said is that Russians managed to stop and turn around 2 biggest powers since the Golden Horde - Polish never had glorious moments of this magnitude. Not to mention them being occupied and held successfully by every neighbor they had.
