Dear fans of the James Kalm Report. Ive just linked an extensive interview with Salt Lakes own conceptual art gad-fly, and internet maven, Qi Peng. This is a lengthy piece but hits on questions Im constantly asked. Check it out at the lorenmunk site
when i was 9 yrs old in 62 we went down to the worlds fair in seattle. There was an art exhibit there and someone had left a janitors bucket and mop in the exhibit, even that long ago the qustion was whether it was part of the exhibit or not.
James, I'm probably showing my ignorance, but I didn't quite get the "artwork" with the girl in a jogging suit with a bit of red dye on it. And I didn't understand what you did that she and J.S. didn't like - did you get too close, or were you not supposed to talk with her?
Anyway, your question was relevant. Was this an installation piece, and what do you suppose was the significance of the red dye?
The red drips weren't dye but embroidery. I think there was a subtle reference to blood or perhaps drippy abstraction, but also an attempt to have the art fade into the background only visible to those with the observational powers to pick it up. Jerry was making a joke, banter.
I don't understand whats so controversial about some of the art work....can anyone explain what the big deal about this is? For instance what pieces stood out most and why?
The show's press release states there were 150 international artists, writers, curators and critics forming a network of recommendations. Seems these folks don't get painting much, although there were a few more examples that I just couldn't squeeze in. Also, it takes time to learn to paint. I've been working at it longer than these kids have been alive and am still a beginner.
Ooops, The banana peel piece (installation Banana Peel) is by Adriana Lara, and is available in an unlimited edition for twenty thousand bucks each (joke)

Hey James, good work, love the show too. Whats the name again of the artist resembling Juan Gris? Love that.
Cheers!!

Tauba Arbach, I think she's based in San Fran, one of the better discoveries in the show.

Totally real, essentially, the mascot aesthetic of the show.

I propose the sequel to this exhibition to be "The generational: Washed up at 40/ Too old to be relevant" or some dumb shit like that.
ajules66 2 years ago
My suggested title for the sequel would be
"Older than Elvis: Losers Who Made the Bad Career Chose of Surviving Beyond Adolescence"
Anyone else have any "relevant" suggestions?

Nice video James, much appreciated! Josh Smith, very decent artist

The Josh Smith pieces were actually mostly digital print college, unfortunately didn't have time to squeeze in the close-ups.

Perhaps its the "uncontroversial" nature of so much of the work, one of the byproducts of "decisions by committee".
As for "what piece stood out", you tell me?

I am surprised at the very small quantity of paintings in the show. Is painting going out of fashion in NYC again? I hope not...

That is why I collect paintings. It is much easier than to learn to paint...
