Nice playing man:) Ive seen so many bad players on youtube I was wondering if there were none to be found but you proved me wrong:) Nice tone and great playing got to get me a guitar with P-90:s
@cwfox Thanx. I'm plugged straight into my modified 1982 Fender Concert 1x12 combo. So I'm not using any pedals, but you do hear a slap echo that comes from a separate amp (Fender SFX Satellite) that handles the wet signal only through another 1x12. Both 1x12 cabs are loaded with a Weber California.
@bluesdog88 Thanx. You need a pickguard that is cut for P90s. Warmoth or Terrapin Guitars can cut you a custom pickguard. I ordered mine from Terrapin and it is perfect. And P90s are not designed to be pickguard mounted. They are screwed directly into the body, so in my case the P90s get mounted and then the pickguard gets slipped on over them. You can find humbucker sized P90s that will mount to a SSH pickguard though. Measure your body rout as a P90 is slightly longer than a humbucker.
@marksmitchell OK Thanks for the info, and thans for sharing the great tone ;) Oh if you have time checkout my zappa/hendrix strat build, I'm a pyromaniac lol
Hi Mark, on your strat with the 2 x P90s and a single coil in the middle position, you mention that on the 5 way switch position 3 is both P90s. Would it be possible to tell me wher I can get a wiring diagram for this (ie) 1=bridge 2= bridge/mid 3=bridge/neck 4=mid/neck 5=neck. I'm looking at using Kinman Humbuckers and strat AVN63 in the mid. Appreciate any advice and love watching your youtube collection of videos. Thanks in anticipation.
@bdalchow Thanx. I actually just used the Stew-Mac Model E Mega Switch which does it for me with no other special wiring needed. It's a nice high quality 5-way switch and I have used it in a number of my Strats. Highly recommended. Just search for it on the Stew-Mac website (stewmac dotcom.)
Mate, that's why I love P90s, this tone is just out of this world!
I'm putting together P90 strat like yours, with a regular single coil on the middle. Does a Regular strat wiring for 5 way switch 1 vol and 2 tone works?
@rafabcarvalho Thanx. Yeah, classic Strat wiring works fine. I just wanted the bridge + neck tone on my switch so I made that change. Really love this Strat...
@thedoerfels Thanx. You can barely see my amp behind me on the left side of the screen. It's a 1982 Fender Concert which has been modified using the Dan Torres (Torres Engineering) mods, and I'm plugged directly into it. With this amp I don't need a distortion pedal, so I never use one.
@olalator They are sized as a usual P90, so I had get my pickguard cut for the P90 size and use a body with a swimming pool rout to get it all to fit properly.
I bought a pair of Kinman P90s fter reading a bunch and checking out some demos like this one (and thanks for using some distortion!) As much as they cost compared to other pickups, I'm buying three more for two other guitrs. These pickups are AMAZING, real P90 sound (they ARE real P90s) with zero hum. Clean they jangle nice with a full sound and great harmonics, but with distortion, WOW! Even with 2 or 3 fuzzes on at once, I get MASSIVE ripping chunk but clear definition. They are the best!
@MrJohnnyDistortion Thanx. And these pups don't just sound good... They FEEL good, if you know what I mean. Great P90 tone can be very intoxicating, they really reward you when you dig-in. And these pups really do that for me.
@marksmitchell I understand. It's like you're watching someone else playing. An out of body experience when the amp, guitar, guitarist become one. It's a freaky "in the zone" experience but that's why we play the instrument along with the endless form of expression that you can squeeze from it.I still can't believe the fat tones you're getting, like humbuckers.Sweet.Nice amp.Perfect.Rock on.
Thanks for the demo.I've been looking for pickups for the LP & SG Tribute that I'll soon purchase and I think these are it.Thanks for the equipment info. Not many will tell us these facts.Great licks & tone and best wishes with your health.
@marksmitchell I'm considering making the switch over to p-90's myself. Just looking for the midrange crunch and sustain. Humbuckers for me aren't cutting it for some reason. Wondering how these hold with sustain.
@Labtec86 P-90s are in a tone-class all by themselves and are really worth the effort. These Kinman's aren't at all what I would call hi-gain yet they sustain quite well. I'd say that they would compare well with a typical PAF type pickup in that regard.
I wonder what you do for a living... No offense, but I'm like "you know this programmer who hardly talks to anyone during lunch break?" I heard he also plays the guitar...And you sound like you've had the blues from the beginning of time! :D
@expendabolicious Well... Just between you, me & the internet... I'm well qualified to play the blues. I'm officially retired. I retired early because I have health issues. But it has allowed me to play a bit more too. So it's not all bad...
I agree about the curtains. ;) But man, you've got the blues...In a good way I guess :) I'm confused about these p90's, because you're so happy to have no hum, and they do sound more like humbuckers to me, add to that that regular p90 actually introduce hum, at the expense of more 'crystal' like sound... Which would actually suit your playing... It's drunk talk, but what do you think?
@expendabolicious This is my 6th set of P90s with the first 5 sets being true single coil P90s. These Kinmans have the P90 signature. They have more highs and less midrange notch than the average PAF style humbucker. Most of the time I am playing through my hi-gain rig, and even though my particular amp is actually fairly quiet, P90 hum can still be quite loud. If I was using a overdrive pedal it would be even worse. I really enjoy not having to deal with it, and still getting really great tone.
I bet you'd sound marvelous on one of the new Kendrick's K 15 tube amps. They are amazing. Best reverb ever. This video was inspiring. Now about those curtains....
Mr. Mark Smitchell, quite frankly you look rather unsuited for a guitar, but you play better than ALOT of people ive ever heard. I dont say this too often, but you sir rock haha.
@marksmitchell I don't care if you had 2 heads, I suppose they expect shoulder length hair, tattoos displayed etc, but I really appreciate your style, the sound I'd love to have, and so what you're an indvidual, just do it your way.
This particular Strat body already had a "swimming pool" rout under the pickguard so there was plenty of room in there for the P-90s. I had the pickguard custom made for me. While the middle pickup is still mounted to the pickguard, the P-90s are mounted directly into the body as they typically are with Les Pauls and SGs. So the pickguard just fits over them. It's a little funky because the wiring has to still go to the pickguard, but it works fine...
That's a nice tone. Thanks for posting this video. Have you tried the Fralin noiseless P90? I'm curious if you've done a comparison. If so, any opinion between the two?
No, I haven't played the Fralin. The few players that have posted about having played both seem to favor the Kinman over the Fralin. But regardless, I'm sure the Fralin is a good sounding pickup.
I have had a Fralin P-92 in my 335 guitar neck position (my favorite position for a p-90) for about 4 years. I haven't been able to compare it to a Kinman but the Fralin pickup sounds amazing. Fralin and co asked what strings I play with and guitar and action then custom wound the pick up for me.
Although I do like the Kinman blues strat pickups better then Fralins
That's a nice tone. Thanks for posting this video. Have you tried the Fralin noiseless P90? I'm curious if you've done a comparison. If so, any opinion between the two?
I use a modified 1982 Fender Concert. You can just barely see it in back of me. It sits on top of a Fender SFX Satellite which is set on slapback echo. Otherwise I'm not using any pedals. The overdrive & reverb come from the amp, and the slapback comes from the Satellite. I don't run the Satellite back into the Concert for the full effect either. I prefer to keep the wet & dry signals separate, and I can do that since the Satellite has it's own amp & speaker. I think it sounds better that way.
Awesome! How much scalloping i s on you fingerboard? Is it on all positions or just the top? Does the depth o the scalloping increase as you go up the neck?
Yeah, the scalloping covers the whole fretboard, and it does increase in depth as you go up the neck. I've been playing scallops for quite a few years now and I really like it. It just gives me so much more contol over every note I play.
This neck was made that way by Warmoth. I have many scalloped necks made by Warmoth and really like them. This one even has stainless steel fretwire, which for me is the ultimate. I have scalloped one Fender neck myself. It was a bit if work but it turned out fine. I have 10 Strats and only one of those has a neck that is not scalloped. It's sort of a big thing with me...
To fit the P90s did you cut out wood from from the strat, or did the guitar come with room for the P90s. I have a 92 strat which has a rectangular block cut out for pickups rather than the usual single coil cut out. I am also wondering if P90s are deep requiring more wood to be cut out from my 92 strat.
I start in the neck position. Then at 2:22 I switch to the middle position, which is actually the bridge & neck together in series. At 3:08 I switch to the bridge pickup until 4:43 when I switch back to the neck pickup. So the middle pickup itself doesn't figure into this recording. To hear the 2 & 4 position tones you'll have to go to my Soundclick page (Artist name "SMark Guitar") and download the recording I made called "Kinman P-90 Blues"
Has that great hollow honk and responsiveness. I was wondering though, can you tell me are these the regular or limited edition p-90's. Chris says on his website that there are some differences in the winding. Also what amp settings and or pedals did you use for this. If you could let us know it would be greatly appreciated.
I have the regular P-90 Hx set. My amp is a modified 1982 Fender Concert 1x12 with an alnico Weber California. I'm not using any pedals, but I am using the amps reverb. And a bit of delay is produced separately and added at the mixer board. You can get more details on my amp by visiting my website. You can find the link to it on my YouTube Channel page. Thanx.
