Not sure what you mean. This performance is old and in questionable sound but the hesitation at the beginning that I hear is part of every Libiamo I've heard. If you simply mean Guilini slowed it down perhaps a little too much for DiStefano, then I agree.
No, it is DiStefano who is behind. Most of the time he is doubled by the violins, and of course the classic Verdi um-cha-cha bassline makes it pretty obvious. It's most clear at 0.48 to about 0.57.
....by the way, I'm not trying to rubbish DiStefano in any way; I just think maybe he's a bit over indulgent here. Shame he doesn't manage to get the grace notes in, too.
You are correct, I thought you were talking about the big pause at roughly :23 , but I think love or hate DiStefano, and I am certainly not his biggest fan, I think it would go unoticed by most fans. It took me two more listens and I had to "look" for it. But it is there. That you are right about.
i think Di Stefano was doing it on purpose because he was jealous of all the attention that was lavished on Maria...remember,he walked OUT after only one performance of the Scala-Visconti production,after generally making a fool of himself by being late for rehearsals and playing naff practical jokes on Visconti!!Plus,he's always said he doesn't like this opera as there's not enough for the tenor to 'do'...so,i think it's all a big ego trip from him,slowing it down so he gets longer attention!!

Then it was misjudged. Rubato is one thing, but di Stefano is too out of sync with the orchestra at that point, I think.

Not sure what you mean. This performance is old and in questionable sound but the hesitation at the beginning that I hear is part of every Libiamo I've heard. If you simply mean Guilini slowed it down perhaps a little too much for DiStefano, then I agree.

No, it is DiStefano who is behind. Most of the time he is doubled by the violins, and of course the classic Verdi um-cha-cha bassline makes it pretty obvious. It's most clear at 0.48 to about 0.57.
....by the way, I'm not trying to rubbish DiStefano in any way; I just think maybe he's a bit over indulgent here. Shame he doesn't manage to get the grace notes in, too.

You are correct, I thought you were talking about the big pause at roughly :23 , but I think love or hate DiStefano, and I am certainly not his biggest fan, I think it would go unoticed by most fans. It took me two more listens and I had to "look" for it. But it is there. That you are right about.

i think Di Stefano was doing it on purpose because he was jealous of all the attention that was lavished on Maria...remember,he walked OUT after only one performance of the Scala-Visconti production,after generally making a fool of himself by being late for rehearsals and playing naff practical jokes on Visconti!!Plus,he's always said he doesn't like this opera as there's not enough for the tenor to 'do'...so,i think it's all a big ego trip from him,slowing it down so he gets longer attention!!

actually i don't it, i'm far from picky was a simple obersvation not a concrete fact, sorry if you mistook it for some kind of slander but it wasn't, i very much enjoyed this performance.
