  • i'm hurting a lot. this is good to feel!

  • Holy fucking shit....

  • Awesome video... Ty! Love Joni! :)

  • there will never be another joni mitchell

  • Wow, 288 likes... and one person with no soul.

  • We tend to 'worship' those that can relate our life to us in poetry, in magical imagery, because for many of us our lives are shadowy blurs of experiences we hardly understand, and when we hear someone talking to us from the deep secret places-we are astounded that they can do this-articulate for us the feelings, present us with a 'map' of our inner life. Precious indeed.

  • @GalaxyHorse An excellent post, GalaxyHorse.

  • I can't think of one artist from the 60-70s who's music has held up and still has contemporary value as much as Joni Mitchell's. It's been 40+ years and I still love listening and singing along with her songs. She affected me in profound ways and helped me find my voice. She pioneered the singer/songwriter genre yet not one has risen to her level of creative genius. She has, and has given the world, an amazing gift.

  • "..It strikes against the very nerves of life, and in order to do that you have to strike against the nerves of your own."

  • Funyy, but the song Blue is NOT about Graham Nash, it's about James Taylor. Blue was his nickname, because of his blue shirts on the cover of his albums Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. Also the lines 'Acid, Booze and ass, needles, guns and grass... refers to James' drug adiction!

  • Great album - is joni the best singer - no - is she the best musician - no not really - but she´s an incredible songwriter and the album is incredibly honest and sincere.

  • Who is the man talking that she had loved and moved on from...?

  • @fiddler1252 Graham Nash of "The Hollies" and "Crosby, Stills and Nash" fame.

  • @fiddler1252 James Taylor!

  • @treg1980 The guy talking at the beginning is definitely Graham Nash, but you're absolutely right that the song is about James Taylor. I think GN was indulging in a little self-protective delusionalism here--it probably would have hurt to admit to himself and everyone else how relatively insignificant a figure he was in Joni's love life, after living with her and all ...

  • @Seasass You're right, I know the guy at the beginning is Graham. I think he meant the whole Blue album was Joni's way of saying goodbye to him, not the song. The song Blue is a happy love sing, because at the time of the Blue album she was involved with James. They're break-up happened after the Blue album and she used her JT heartbreak for her For The Roses album.

  • I ususally cringe when artists talk about their work. Particularly songwriters, but Joni is really right on the mark with how she talks about her work . . . . .

  • This song kills me.....in a good way.

  • This song rips me apart

  • i like her guitar songs. not so much her piano ones on Blue.

  • @theinck:

Matter of taste I guess. Joni may not be a piano concert virtuoso, but has an amazing talent for melody and harmony.. and is able to express this on an extraordinary variety of instruments!

  • Joni Mitchell and Diana Krall.... ...

I'd love to hear them working together. Diana Krall's interpretation of A Case Of You is a masterpiece. They would make a great team, I MISS JONI MITCHELL and all her more recent jazzy stuff was so, so, excellent. Come on Joni... ENCORE, hana hou

(ps I'm reasonably sure that is Graham Nash who intros this You Tube video but who would not risk a heartbreak to be with Joni or Diana... Elvis Costello is a lucky DOG!)

  • Joni Mitchell has been called the best female singer-song writer of the twentieth century. Was there a better MALE singer? Dylan perhaps.

One thing's for sure: she's one in a billion.

  • @iwys In terms of vocal quality, technical proficiency on various instruments, and sophistication of her harmonies and musical forms, Joni surpasses Dylan (and I think he would be man enough to admit as much). Only in their lyrics are they on the same level. Neil Young (who might be considered another contender for the title) once remarked to Joni, when she was opening for CSNY, that they should have been opening for her.

  • @iwys

Dylan? A lyricist of the same caliber, perhaps, in a quite different way. Singer, though?

He phrases well.. but, let's be honest, his voice isn't in Joni's category. Joni's voice wouldn't probably be called classical operatic quality by classical musicians: but she has excellent range, control and diction.

  • @iwys

we Italians have MINA, one in two billions ..!

  • i think that Joni's song Blue is a work of art, its is beautifull in a very special way, and her voice is just amazing, better than any other singer, and really i dont get those that doesnt like her voice, but then again i do, its because all people want is for the singers to have voices that are all alike, all uniform and BORING and the only reason why so many people want that is because they do not understand the beauty of a voice that is unique, rather than one like every other singer around!

  • @MyLifeInWonderland

ever listened to Mina, the Italian " Voce" ?

  • you haven't lived if you haven't experienced Joni......

  • “better than the beatles? paul simon? carol king? elton john? garth brooks? the stones?" --Actually, yes. Imo Mitchell was a better songwriter than any of these and I'm guessing they would agree if you asked them. Creativity, originality, honesty, musicianship, expressivity and artistic integrity all came together in one glorious package. Her songs remain fresh and relevant. There are many great songwriters but Joni Mitchell is in a class by herself.

  • THIS WOMAN IS MY SURROGATE MOTHER. MANY DAYS I WOULD SPEND ALONE LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM LOCKED IN MY BEDROOM

  • although this is revered by many on a poigniant emotional level, and I can relate to that, I prefer the early material for its freshness and creative energy , where subjective canonical comparisons are redundant.

  • thanks for sharing Joanie.

    your work nourished me .

  • god she is brilliant!

  • I still cry when I listen to this song.I play it when I'm in a Blue mood and somehow it cheers me up.Joni was my best friend when I was in highschool and she doesn't even know it.She puts words to the emotions we all feel.

  • greatest songwriter ever. no one will ever come close.

  • @nohaylamujer you mean like even lennon and mccartney, irving berlin, steven sondheim, cole porter? you're a musical moron...

  • @LaughSlave actually I find some of Joni's lyrics better than anything lennon + mccartney wrote. I have all the beatles albums and love their music, but I have to acknowledge this, as a writer. bernie taupin wrote all of elton's great songs, and again the lyrics are simpler than joni's. I would put carole king and paul simon close to joni in lyrics and as good or better musicians. as a musical composer berlin probably ranks as high or higher than anyone on that list, but lyrically?

  • Haunting song.

  • The Greatest Singer Songwriter / Musician of the past 50 years !

    Hail the Queen Joni !

  • @tonto4848 you mean, better than the beatles? paul simon? carol king? elton john? garth brooks? the stones? the list goes on and on before joni mitchell's all-sound-alike songs enter the equation...

  • Comment removed

  • She's right, it's the naked honesty, working through her open and exposed vulnerability, that makes her work so great.

  • Straordinaria Joni... Canzone stupenda!!!!

  • JM is a national treasure. She certainly exposed herself on this album. What an enlightened songwriter/performer.

  • Re 'Greatest female songwriter'

When someone described Joni as 'the female Bob Dylan'. she remarked sarcastically, "How do you think Bob Dylan would like being called 'the male Joni Mitchell'?"

    LOL!

  • Greatest female songwriter who will ever live.

  • NO ! The greatest songwriter - period.

  • @bfdhvcnvvbjdn

It would be an insult to Joni to call Dylan "the male Joni." Her musical prowess makes him look like a musical illiterate....

  • @sportsmediaamerica but voice wise, barbra streisand makes joni mitchell sound like a kazoo...

  • Joni did all that she is saying to me.

  • She's amazing! When somebody thinks woman are stupid or something like that you can talk about Joni Mitchell to change that person's mind. She's just great..thanks :)

  • She is so talented and intelligent it's scary ...our BEST singer/songwriter EVER, PERIOD !! and oh that voice..angelic and timeless ....weve gone from Joni to Taylor Swift...how FAR we have fallen, my friends ...xo

  • she looks like an angel

  • and she writes like an angel and sings like an angel......one of the very purest sounds in all of music!! She;s been of the best parts of the contemporary music scene since 1966 - and is still going strong!! Perhaps she really IS an angel.....

  • Una Genia la Mitchell y cuanta Honestidad , fuera de la banalidad globalizadora , del marchandasing maraca , y de los ego /stars de siempre.

Su Armonia tarsciende el Cosmos ...

  • She's a fountain of creativity. It just pours forth. No three chord monty from Joni. She was too smart for that.

  • where can we get this documentary?

  • to frankho99:

The documentary is called "Joni Mitchell - Woman of Heart and Mind: A Life Story". You can get the DVD from Amazon, for instance. (currently @ $11.47)

    Hope this helps :-)

  • Thanks I ordered it. Do you think Cheryl Crow borrowed some of Joni Mitchell's musicality?

  • jesus, thissong is SOOOOO GOOOOD that makes everybody shake under its skin

  • Next year's the 40th anniversary of Isle of Wight!

  • CANCION DE 1971

  • this is incredibly beautiful.

  • If anybody is seeding a torrent of this doco, can you PM me it? I saw it on free to air TV and forgot to tape it. But such an excellent documentary. Put me in awe of Joni again.

  • To answer your question: Joni has become 65 this year. As far as I know she does not want to do anything with music industry anymore.

By the way; this song is about JT.

  • JT? Do you mean Joni's hamster Jezewelgabawohoo trevalian?

  • Did Joni died? or is she still alive....I hope she's alive...

  • No, legatou, she's still alive.

  • VERY MUCH ALIVE!!! Still the Queen! Vive la reine!

  • Ask Kurt Cobain about what Joni speaks and you can get a taste of the pain he felt. Joni was a survivor though.

  • Does anybody know where can I get that documentary from?

  • the dvd is called Woman of Heart and Mind. I saw it in HMV and in other Record shops. It is a real treat for us Joni fans. I hope you find it and enjoy.

  • Thanks! :D

  • the DVD woman of heart and mind. It is a great DVD, though a bit censored.

  • PBS did a wonderful bio/documentary on Joni in the American Masters series I think. But I never can find it for sale on their website. Others are there but not the one on Joni. I don't understand why.

  • This video is FROM that American Masters broadcast,,,,the initial narration is that of Graham Nash.

  • I wondered if it was, figured it had to be. But for some reason it isn't available to buy on DVD on PBS website, as are so many others.

  • It's the title track to her album Blue. Check out Case of you and River from that album

  • lol - Your right the Hate Wagon needs to offload but >> figure it out yourself>>...hmmm... you might not want a "hater" to use his/her own (perhaps hateful) interpretation of this song. :)

  • epic offering!

  • she's amazing. <3

  • It's about an ending of a relationship.....with herself as she knew herself. Yes she is saying goodbye to a man.......but more importantly she is saying goodbye to herself. It was one long artistic journey and at this point she feels she has no more to give. "An empty space to fill in" She is pure genius.

  • There's probably a couple million people who feel the same exact way as BLUE... so to me those who don't have the outlet of being a "public voice" like Joni. Well we are all a genius. Some people just get lucky and can express it to the world

  • Someone can take me the file midi or mp3 of this song? I'm a singer and i need of it...thanks is very important kiss

  • Yes it is about alonliness- the aloneness that is all of our reality as has so often been pondered- as are so many songs of the seventies and eighties.

  • can someone tell me what this song is about....i desperately need to know...PLEASE....thanks

  • loneliness

  • Diana Krall seems like a plumber, next to Mitchell.

  • I have said this exact same thing if not this precise comparison in other posts; glad to see someone agrees.

  • @fuhmeregan Diana Krall doesn't even seem, period. ... next to Joni Mitchell, that is.

  • @fuhmeregan Seems like a plumber or sounds like plumbing? LOL! Actually, I like Diana Krall a lot. I just don't think she has anywhere near the genius of Joni!

  • @fuhmeregan

i agree. Ms Krall offer only pubic glamour.

  • Like Dylan, she is a girl from the North country, and sings so close to the edge, so deep her lyrics cut into us, cannot be removed. Lovely echoes, indelible.

  • Miss Mitchell at her best...her voice gives me chills. (I do wish I could hear the song separately rom the documentary... 5 stars

  • One of my children has Blue as his middle name after this song.

  • such a painful song, actually probably one of the greatest songs ever written. Like Dylan , hardhitting and harsh, yet perhaps more painful because she is so straight to the point. this song my god.

  • Songs are like tattoos, ya know, like ink on an pin, kinda like memories that stick. Hey, I felt totally no feeling today, like an endless cloud, floating along, but I listened to this, and now I'm feeling blue, and that is wonderful, just like Joni.

    I love her~~

  • why does this song still get under my skin?this is very painful

  • My favourite Joni song...and one of my favourite songs altogether! BEAUTIFUL!

  • Is it me, or does she look like a goddess at the piano with her hair down and long flowing dress?

  • :):):)

  • One of the most beautifully sung songs ever!!!!

  • ...sometimes I think I know what you're feeling Graham...

  • This live performance of Blue is just breathtaking. Is there a full version of this perfomance available anywhere?

  • i saw this documentary a couple of months ago, i'd never heard joni before, but now i'm addicted. she's amazing.

  • Joni Mitchell is one of the great (perhaps unacknowledged) artists of the 60s. Her profound, poetic lyrics, wonderful chords and voice like silk in the wind set her apart from all her imitators. It became fashionable, latterly, to deride and stereotype her (gloomy, confessional etc). She is beyond all of that. Her wonderful album "Hejira" is a soundtrack for the freedoms we had in the 70s. Her laughing, sensuous "Chelsea Morning" is the very epitome of freedom. "Blue" is spell-binding.

  • I agree i am a 29 year old from baltimore md who was raised by hippies I love joni mitchell

  • Absolutely spine-tingling.

  • hehe henry it was this video tht made me fall in love with this song after i watched it like 6 months ago random hehe

    xxx

  • never seen such emotions in a piano solo

  • or in her vocals - she's singing her with all her soul

  • my favorite album in the world, she is unfathomably incredible

  • Wow

  • My God, her voice and words are simply enchanting. I can't stop listening to this song. I wish her health and longevity.

  • When it is art-ya dont have to talk about it...Blue.......

  • Blue is hands down the best Joni Mitchell album, as well as one of the best rock albums of all time. This album may have cme out before my time, but when I first heard it which was 1997, I just fell in love with it.

  • I love the album too, but I would never consider it a rock album.

  • Was that Graham Nash speaking at the beginning? Sounded like him to me..

  • Yes, that was Graham. "Blue" is one of my favorite albums. This is from a PBS special "Joni Mitchell: A Life Story--Woman of Heart and Mind." It's available on DVD. I highly recommend it!

  • I'll look it up. Graham seemed like the perfect partner for Joni. I met him once and I was so amazed by the strong vibe he gives off I could barely thank him for the music and shake his hand. Very nice, warm person..the perfect muse for each other I think.

  • Seeing this video inspired me to watch the documentary again the other night. Graham really does seem like a dear man. Joni inspired "Our House". My late husband and I would sing that song around our home. When it started to play in the background of the documentary, I burst into tears. I'm getting verklempt all over again!

  • Where I can find more of this?

  • Living, modern day Goddess.

  • Simply stunning...full of honest emotion...heartbreaking music.

  • She is such an intelligent woman, and that voice would make a grown man cry.

  • Oh, Beautiful Beautiful Blue.

  • Blue, Blue, Blue. I never get tired of that song, I think is amazing. Bravo Joni, she's a legend.

    Thanks for this video.

  • No one does

  • Does anyone know what concert this footage is off?

  • I am fairly sure it is from 'Miles of Aisles', she plays a few solo piano songs in between playing with Tom Scott & the L.A. Express-she had that long hair and 'look' back then-

    Wonderful version.

  • i love joni mitchell! this reduced me to tears xxx no ones music reaches inside me liker hers does

  • chills.... just listening to her... ~S

  • a superb, sublime Artiste

  • Blue is amazing. She's one of the best.

  • Just wait a few decades, Joni will get the credit she has long deserved. She sure as Hell lit a fire for me to last a life time. Joni's vocals along with her songwriting prooves there a such thing as best.

  • Agreed, but Joni has received a great deal of credit in her career: she is a very wealthy woman, has received several grammy awards, entered into the Jazz hall of fame, has millions of adoring fans..it's not too bad

  • Or, as, of all people, Roger Daltry said of Brian Wilson and Smile and the infamous Surf's Up phrase "Columnated ruins domino:" "If you're trying to make music that's never been heard before, then you're gonna want words that have never been used before." Same thing could be said of Joni Mitchell, my own personal Joan of Arc.
