I remember as a small child doing this dance at a competition organised by the school. All the girls had to wear lovely white dresses with a tartan sash. When I went home and informed my mother that I would need new white plimsoles she nearly had a fit. It was the 60s and my father was out of work so times were hard. I was sent to a neighbour to borrow a shilling and I got my shoes plus a lovely wee pair of white ankle socks. We actually won and beat ten other schools so it was all worth it.
Just another reason why I am so much in love with and why I am SO PROUD of the Scottish heritage I have. Me Mahther was of Irish AND SCOTTISH heritage so I've not alot of "Scot" in me BUT I LOVE amd maintain the little I have! Me bride to be is quite of British isles heritage: she has a bit o all the isles in her genetics (Irish Welsh English and Scot)!
You'd have to have a fair bit of self-confidence to participate in this dance. The tall blond in Stewart tartan pulls it off with total abandon and a lot of style.
A great and very enjoyable video. Thank you for posting. I have seen the SFO in London many times and loved it. I have danced in the aisle at the Barbican Hall to the SFO. The guys look wonderful in their kilts, pity the ladies do not look quite so good, such dull colours with the exception of one lady.
Danced this for the first time a week or so ago with the Rome Ceilidh Club - superb when you get it (sort of) right. Great to see this as I need to put in some homework before the next event.

In more amusing words: My genetics are just Scottish enough but I'm no Scottish enough!

Wonderful! Just check out the infectious enthusiasm of the woman in the blue dress swinging her skirts and getting totally into the dance!
