  • How about neither versions are better. Music isn't a fucking competition and I guarantee all yous saying otherwise are not musicians. I personally think this is a great take on the original by an extremely creative and musically talented band. Also Spencer Sotelo is not a shit vocalist because YOU don't like him. The only part that is true is the latter, now jog on.

  • @JaceXander FINALLY, someone with a reasonable thought! "One" is my favorite song of all-time, and I love Metallica, but I LOVE this version. Better than the original, IMO, but both versions rock all day. I salute you, sir. And to others reading this comment, if you hate this version and Spencer's vocals (for whatever reason) so much, then CLOSE THE FUCKING TAB (or window, if you're on IE). Leave us logical Metallica/Periphery fans be and go on about your business.

  • good cover but still not as good as the original

  • dislike for vocals.

  • @Beast9894 yea vocals ruined it for me aswell

  • i love what the drummer added in to the track, also this guy has an incredible vocal range

  • im not a fan of core music too much. however there are a few good bands. I don't care for most of periphery's stuff, but still Misha and his crew are very skilled and capable guitarists and musicians. Only an idiot would deny that.

  • Love Bulb (misha) but can't get on with the vocalist in Periphery, he just sounds fucking well just annoying and like a whiny cunt.

  • Periphery does this song so much more justice, not to mention their singer didn't kick Dave Mustanes dog

  • @thehighler LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL but the inger didnt let it walk over hetfields car

  • funny to see how metallica songs only sound shitty because of ulrich and hammet

  • @Freelocybin Just Ulrich, Hammet is at least competent, but Lars can't even keep the double bass up in this song anymore.

  • @mrnobodyouknow dude seriously, Hammet aint got shit! Hes just a bitch who got famous for playing fast solos - but thats all. He got no feeling, no inspiration, he doesnt even have his own sound. If I hear Dimebag Darrell, Kerry King, A.J. Minette etc in a Song that I dont know, I still recognize them - because they put their spirit in their playing - something Hammet has never achieved.

  • Minus the singer this is good

  • Glad to see a half way decent cover instead of trying to sound exactly the same as the original, when I listen to a band cover a song, I want them to translate it into there own sound, not enough bands do that.

  • @THEMAN62084 their*

  • no band can do a better cover...its impossible...!!! but this is pretty fucking epic !!! \m/

  • Pretty cool cover.

  • metallica are one of my favorite bands ever...and ive kinda just got into periphery..this is a fantastic cover..to me.it doesnt quite capture the anger and feel...but there a totally diferent band to metallica..but they made there cover there own so yeah great cover..his voice is great..however think the screaming doesnt do the song justice apartf rom that last one haha ..but the chorus is epic..

  • how about

james singing with misha mark nolly matt and jake instead of james

i do prefer this version though.

  • This is a sexy cover, but can't ever beat the original.

  • To all of you who think either version is better, that's your opinion. Whether or not it's proven which are better, it's still all opinions. Metallica are an amazing band, and wrote this song about 20 years ago; advocating the fact that for their time they were the band on top. However, Periphery did an excellent cover on this by putting their own spin on it. I love both versions. Nuff said. Music is music, and if you can't appreciate all of it, then you're not a fan of music yourself.

  • @SimaShiX I love both versions, but just because you dont appreciate all music, does not mean that you are not a fan; I personally dont think rap is real music. I am a musician and I love what I do. Just some food for thought.

  • @SimaShiX well said

  • GAY GAY GAY

  • @eltemor Yep. Periphery is about as gay as it gets.

  • This is shit.

  • I think there should be a black metal cover of the song.

  • @Yonraththeblack and I don't mean the cookie monster singing version that people thought was children of bodom.

  • I really like his cleans.

  • THIS SONG KICKS METALLICA'S ARSE!!

  • LOL at all the Grandfathers crying because Periphery does it better

  • @augustburnsalex No, they're not doing it better, They're doing it in their own way, that's all that matters when making a cover.

  • @augustburnsalex haha, our names........

  • @danielburnsred HOW COUD YOU KILL A DOG!?! D:

  • @augustburnsalex agreed dude one was amazing back in its time and this is even better!

  • @reubenlane periphery is the shizznit

  • @deathmetalinsanity54 waaahhhhh

  • @augustburnsalex very repectful

  • @augustburnsalex They don't, haha.

  • @Zilencez94 ya huhhh

  • i like periphery, and i dont like metallica. this song was cool til the vocals kicked in, and then it killed it for me=/ sounds like linkin park X(

  • say something intelligent like. i pee on the inner side of the toilet bowl to eliminate splashes.

  • @synnimanwhisky Jeez, you must powerpiss like a motherfucker. I piss on the side of the bowl 'cuz its reeeeeal stealthy.

  • Excuse me, I'll changue my pants, or maybe my life, this is motherfucking MINDBLOWING!

  • I am a big fan of Metallica, I don't think they did a bad job, I liked it!

  • Great cover, but this is a James Hetfield song, vocals can't compare with original.

  • Tapping was too slow :-D But still love Periphery

  • @CoreThrasherGLB It's a cover. That's how Periphery wanted to play it.

  • Im good friends with one of the guys that recorded a lot of homefronts tracks

  • i think this is the best cover of any metallica song that has ever been done its so nice and melodic in the beginning and then when the heavy part comes in it sounds so fuckin beast... and i wouldnt say its faster than the original there both roughly around the same length... what makes it sound faster is the incredible drummer just playing double bass straight through till the end.. great fuckin cover

  • Where's the emotion? Ok, their drummer is better, but if you say that this cover is better than the original song I think you still have to learn something about music...

  • press six for BREAKDOWN

  • lame, sounds like a pop singer from american idol.

  • @diRTyNeEcH yas sure.... NOT ! Incredible vocalist !

  • it is much more impressive than the original!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • E P I C !

  • How to troll metallica's fanboy.

  • fanboys, lol'ed

  • To start off, I absolutely LOVE Periphery and Metallica. That said, I love both versions. Metallica's is a benchmark in Metal history, but Periphery made the song more of an experience than just a piece.

  • i think anyone who does a cover is doing it out of respect. loads of people have covered metallica songs, and rightly so. there such a benchmark in metal. to play tallica is like giving something back to metal

  • Nothing beats the original. Lars just wishes he could actually play drums.

  • You guys are idiots, Periphery isn't metalcore or anything like that, they're djent and progressive metal.

  • @Fatlessjoker Djent isn't a genre! It's the sound a percussive palm muted power chord makes. i hate that word...

  • @HeavyMetalVagabond Thats like saying 'metal isnt a genre! Its a shiney alloy that conducts electricity' or 'Rock isnt a genre its a naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals'. The term djent has evolved to cover bands of this style just as the words metal and rock did. Get over it.

  • @MetalGuitarChris i see your point, but at the same time.. Djent is used to describe a group of bands that use a distinct tone (usually cos theyve jumped on the axe fx bandwagon), and in certain parts of their songs use percussive palm muted power chords... other than that they are COMPLETELY different bands. Periphery, Veil of Maya, Tesseract, Vildhjarta etc etc bare very few similarities, they shouldn't be grouped together under the ridiculous banner of Djent!

  • @HeavyMetalVagabond Djent, Djent, Djent, Djent, Djent, Djent

If people start using that word to describe a genre, then it can become a genre...

  • @JOEtheHOE28 silence JOE, you HOE. muahaha im so witty...

  • @HeavyMetalVagabond it's considered a sub-genre.

  • @Fatlessjoker nothing wrong with metalcore. and Djent sounds almost the same..

  • @Duckman118 I didn't say there was anything wrong with metalcore, although personally I don't like it. But Periphery isn't metalcore, and Djent is very different than metalcore, in my opinion it'a much better.

  • @Fatlessjoker The only problem with Metalcore is it has just as many or more gomo/poser bands as there is good bands. I prefer bands like Killswitch Engage and August Burns Red. I haven't heard much Djent except for Meshuggah. And i like them

  • @Duckman118 You definately haven't heard much metalcore. There is definately more good than bad stuff, it's just that the most good bands don't get the attention they deserve.

  • @Princ3JaMaL All i listen to is Metalcore. Go to my channel, all i have is the good Metalcore like Oh, Sleeper. August Burns Red, killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Haste The day, etc etc.

  • @Duckman118 Oh sleeper is gay, ABR is super gay, killswitch GAY, AILD, GAY,Super bowl GAY

  • @metallicaluva07 those bands are straighter than you thats for sure

  • Not bad but definately can't top James' singing on the original..

  • @AlmostLakai94 agreed, if they combined the two i think this could make a full comeback

  • Anyone got a dl?

  • who ever says Periphary are metalcore are complete retards.

  • hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooly shit

  • decent version, but of course nothing compares to the heaviness and intensity of the original

  • By 1:00 I could already hear Matt Halpern's ghost notes and china so I knew it had to be Periphery.

  • Nah, vocals seriously spoiled it and finished it off.

  • @nihility00 I have ambivalent feelings about this cover. I like the vocals but the guitarist are butchering it. Like someone below me said there's a lack of intensity in the guitar playing. Except 4:30 onwards.

  • @ChuckSchuldinerRIP0 ambivalent? you a nevermore fan by any chance or just intelligent? (tbh the two often go hand in hand)

  • In my opinion the drums are too out of place on the clean riff. Guitars are very good. Vocals don't have enough grit to them (sound too female) but that's a problem with a lot of metalcore bands. Other than that it isn't too bad.

  • @Templemtv Periphery are definately not metalcore...

  • @Templemtv dude i hate metalcore and i listen to Periphery. They are actually supporting Dream Theater on the European Tour and Jake Bowen (one of Periphery's guitarists) is John Petrucci's nephew. I didn't know that until John said that in a recent interview. Periphery is Progessive Metal

  • @Templemtv lol that's like calling metallica death metal.

  • This is a far superior song to the original!

  • It actually isn't too bad till it gets to the solo. There's no flow, and it has none of the feel of the original. It sounded like random flailing on notes.

I like Periphery, but this definitely wasn't one of their strong points.

  • @sxesamuel no. theyre just too musical for your ears. they use really strange scales. I guess this is band listneabe only for musicans or people with some music taste

  • @mikeandbobule I think you missed the part about "I like Periphery". I'm allowed to think that a cover song doesn't do the original justice.

I'm also glad that when I give an honest opinion, your reaction is to insult my musical taste. That makes you look like an asshole.

And go ahead and watch some interviews with Misha. He has no knowledge of music theory, and flat out says he just picks notes that sound good and "grooves". He obviously writes awesome music, but "strange scales" my ass.

  • @sxesamuel My ass misha has no musical theory knowledge. You don't just pick the kinda shit he does out of your backside.

  • @bobindashadows22 Go watch some interviews. He flat out says he does NOT know the theory behind what he's doing. He writes by picking notes that sound good and "grooving". HE says those things. Whether or not they actually are part of an obscure scale, I don't know. The point is that he doesn't either.

I never said he couldn't write, and I never said he couldn't play. I like Periphery. I don't think they did a good job with this solo though.

  • @mikeandbobule Just so you know, you come across as arrogant, not as someone defending periphery. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if his is different to yours it doesn't mean he has no musical taste.

Also, when you said "strange scales", it makes you seem like you're not a musician.

  • just because hes singing octave higher you fags think that this is emo or gay.well, you try sing like that.

  • It's so much better without Lars...

  • @sforzando1213 Nothing is better than the original!

  • @sforzando1213 Listen to all of ...And Justice for All. You'll respect him more.

  • @sforzando1213 and without KIRK

  • @sforzando1213 get a life and u're just another trendy bitch

  • nice cover :D

  • to be honest - and i'm speaking as a metallica fan - i have to say that this is not bad. not bad at all.

  • Holy helll this singer is amazing. At first i didn't like him. But god damn, he has talent. His voice is absolutely angelic and beautiful yet harsh and raging at the same time. Man, i would give anything to sing like that. And that growl during the bridge is impressive as well. The instrumentals kick ass, just goes to show how 3 guitars makes everything better. Love Periphery!

  • @Bludhoundz8 That and a lot of the hate for the guy is coming from first people who knew the band and preferred their old singer (I know for a fact that you're biased toward your first listen no matter what) and second by people who don't realize he has to sing someone else's songs so far. Fully constructed melodies/harmonies that he had nothing to do with writing. I think he'll be a better singer just because he can choose what notes he has to hit next time and the style behind it.

  • @noappend001 EXACTLY. People just never seem to understand how difficult it is for a singer to sing another's singer's song. And this is a new singer?? I thought they only ever had one singer?

  • @Bludhoundz8 As far as releases go they've only had one singer, but they had 3 prerelease, the first was really heavy (Jake), but Periphery started getting away from mostly screaming songs (or something) and found Casey. He wrote a lot of lyrics, and came up with a lot of the singing parts (same instrumental stuff as before) but left after only a year and then they found Chris and he left after 2 years. Then Spencer (this guy) stepped up.

  • @noappend001 If you get a chance, you should check out the earlier versions of some of their bigger songs, it's always an interesting comparison.

  • I dont see anything wrong with doing covers, but at least do the song justice? Metallica is one of the greatest bands of all time n also my favourite band ever, and some bands decide to absolutely murder the songs they cover like this. Bit disappointed with it, although the drumming is awesome.

  • was good until those shitty vocals kicked in

  • @JerWillsher6 I'm not a big Metallica fan, but that's a bit insulting don't you think?

  • @TheOptimistNJ You know... Metallica isn't the only metal band from the 80s. You realize that right? I mean, there's Megadeth, Judas Priest, Pantera, Iron Maiden, etc. So Periphery and Animals As Leaders would still be as good...

  • Texaco.

  • the song was fine. i liked it.the ending solo was weak tho, but i guess Kirk is just that kick ass..lol

  • lacks power during the chorus sections and the vocals before the solo are unfitting, a brave attempt tho.

  • @CheckdaFlow a valid comment. well done you. noone else can handle it haha

  • why there´s a cover of homefront in the song?

  • @OscarWichiWichi It's on the soundtrack

  • I think this is better than the original. Haters gon' hate.

  • @ThatDangGingerXV I'm with you on that one man...

  • @ThatDangGingerXV People also like Lady Gaga.......

But this version is pretty good though. But Metallicas version is understandable better..

  • @primaloutdoorz It's opinion dude. Saying 'nope' is gonna do nothing...

  • @ThatDangGingerXV and assholes gon' love Periphery

  • Every now and then, I'll come back to this video just to reread some of the comments. This is ridiculous. Practically everything being argued over is opinionated, and it serves no purpose to argue. The fact is, we all are united under Metal Undivided. If you don't like a certain subgenre/style, fine. Don't listen to it. But don't ridicule it just because you don't understand it. I swear, both the smartest people and the dumbest people in the whole world listen to metal...

  • This is good. Haters gon' hate.

  • Way to fuck up a great song...

  • Annoying vocals. Weak distortion.

  • @TheRealCadaver vocals get better with every time you listen to it ;)

  • This is why I hate autotune.

  • @jdmimport13 I'm not a big fan of autotune, but imo the autotune really adds something on this one.

  • @iEADGBE To me it doesnt sound like autotune tbh :S it jst sounds like a voice effect like an echo, if you listen to periphery's other songs like jetpacks was yes, there are similar effects :)

  • @jdmimport13 there's no autotune in this song....

  • the same guy sang this ? the one on the album??

  • @Anubhav70747 fuck!! its like he can also change his voice!!! \m/

  • Lars really suck

Matt make a good job in this version!

  • I liked metallic :P and these guys did a pretty decent remake.

  • Metallica meets DJENT... now that's pretty cool actually.

  • The vocals are the best part of the song.

  • Music sounds good. The vocalist sounds like a right fag though. Generic modern day pop-metal vocalist with no balls

  • @ArtOfRuin75 shut your whore mouth. Spencer is quite possibly one of the best metal vocalists out there right now.

  • @RepentantDread He can sing in key. He just sounds generic. There's nothing that makes him stand out from any other vocalists in metal who can sing and scream. So, get over yourself.

  • @ArtOfRuin75 Lol, thats just not true. It's possible to dislike him, but saying he sings out of key is just dumb and untrue.

  • @iEADGBE Re-read my comment, numb nuts. I said he CAN sing IN key. I said that I thought there was nothing special about his vocals. He's generic. So, whereas you thought my opinion is wrong, I think you need to learn to read.

  • @ArtOfRuin75 Ah ok, I read your comment wrong, sorry for that. And I'm perfectly fine with you finding him a generic vocalist (not that I agree with it).

  • @RepentantDread Compared to the likes of Russell Allen? Not even close.

  • So much better than the original! :D

  • The singer sounds like a high school ken doll drama queen. boooo

  • Just like most Periphery songs... Beautiful instrumentation, would be much better without vocals.

  • Wow, this was a surprise. Interesting to hear this song done with an atmospheric, ethereal air, with the heavy section actually sounding like a war-zone. I like Periphery's interpretation of it, however it is missing the emotional power and grab that the original has. This is evident in the insruments not being as raw, but is most noticeable in the vocals. Sorry Spencer, but Hetfield sung this much better and really projected the desperation and anger better. TL;DR version, original is better.

  • STOP, this is a cover, not a clone, so they can do whatever they want with this cover

  • Id have to agree with the majority here. The cover is awesome and the instruments are definitely spot on, but the vocals definitely miss the anger and overall desperation of the song. In my opinion.

  • Breakdown is awesome

  • Finally, I found a version of this song that has received the production that it always deserved but never got with Metallica. I'll be banging my head to this for a long time!

  • How did I not know this existed? :|

  • Lol at the emo comments and fag comments. Get your head out of your butts and realise that Spencer is a hella sick vocalist.

  • Sounds like disney did this

  • Periphery has been one of my favorite bands for a while. This sort of proves their worth among legends. This version proves that the evolution of metal has been productive.

  • first of all this cover is awsome except for the vocals i like it very much .

and now to all you fagots flaming around that metallica fans are ignorant towards other bands and "don't accept" that there are better musicians out there than their masters and to all of you trying to compare bands and musicians by how good they can play their instrument! you are exactly the same judging other folks music taste! and in my oppinion easy songs often sound better that songs with many harmonics or soli

  • This is a shame...........

  • EMO
