I guess it's just a different era of film making. If you look at the movie closely it's as if it was made as a play. You can act out the entire movie scene by scene on a stage and you still wouldn't miss any of the movie's essence. In a way that's exactly how the book was written too. Guess that's what common between the book and the movie.
What a cast John Frazer the piper was like a Scottish Jeffery Hunter. Guinness, Mills and Jackson were all magnificent. Agree that it Beats hands down any of the Hollywood rubbish old or new.
Thanks to this post I saw this film last week; and yes: Alec Guinness' performance is brilliant!
British films from the 1950-'70 are indeed the best ones. Sadly it's very difficult to see good pictures nowadays; just think of all that Hollywood rubbish...
@fantablum the amazing screenplay was by james kennaway, i think he was a really underrated writer. I personally love 'a country dance' even more than this and this and i would give this the 5 stars.
