i was listening to just listen to the song, then i read it was you covering it! thought it was just a recording i'd never heard before! brilliant. I thought the Latin pronunciation was perfect, but I have no knowledge of Latin pronunciation.
There's isn't a 'correct' pronounciation of Latin, really. There are two different dialects that tend to be used - classical and mediaeval - but frankly, it's a dead language. Anyone who tries to speak it is inevitably going to be influenced quite heavily by their mother tongue.
Bravo, excellent, you pronounce it much better than even I can ever try. My aramaic, my mother tongue, sounds even worse. :D Bravo. Honestly, it was great!
the sound is very nice, but your pronunciation it isn't correct. If you want, you can see other version in my profile with the correct pronunciaton. I'm sorry, but i'm very bad speaking and writing english!!! =)
@jackleesparrow it's a 16th century christian coral with roots in the medieval. normally song on christmas. Take look on wiki under "gaudete" for more information.
The only 'fault' I can find is the Latin pronunciation, as you yourself said. But that is not really a fault at all, since this might have sounded exactly like this when sung in England in the late Middle Ages. Very nice layer of voices, very nice indeed!!!! Congrats. :-)
It's lovely! :) Your voice really suits the song. I especially like how you've managed to do all the parts individually. The effect is really cool! :)
Wow, you have done a brilliant job on this. Your voice is lovely and you have layered the harmonies brilliantly. The images are the perfect accompaniment to the music. 10 out of 10!
@moltoallegro19 Give me a break! I was 18, didn't know latin and learned the song by listening to British people singing it. I just pronounced the words the way they did it and I didn't know they were pronouncing them wrong.
@lifeinacndyswrl That's what I mean: you didn't try your best. I'm convinced that you could pronounce this correctly if you really had done some research. I'm not trying to complaine here, what I mean is that you're being unjust to yourself if you say that you tried your best. You sing this greatly and I suppose you put most of the effort, when learning this, on intonation and learning the harmonies and that the pronunciation just came along automatically, copied from whatever version you heard.
@lifeinacndyswrl Interesting. Span are an ENGLISH folk-rock group and they tried to convey that English accent of the period - so, in your diligence, you acquired that Mummer-ish flavour and phrasing - and what some would call "bad" accent: it's fascinating.
I happen to love Span's interpretation, [an English ear] and I also love yours. Furthermore, I think your voice is fine and strong and possessing of a fabulous quality and tone - that's the main thing.
@lifeinacndyswrl No one knows how Latin was pronounced. There was a "common" Latin and a more highbrow Latin which actually had different words for the same nouns. So I say very well done all round. Nobody knows how Latin was pronounced. My dad is a Latin teacher.
@moltoallegro19 I've read complaints about this song all over You Tube. In the Middle Ages, only priests, monks and scholars learned Latin, and even some of THEM used faulty pronunciation. A parish choir of average, uneducated people would have learned this song by rote. They would have sung it with their local accent , and at times would likely have used imperfect Latin. The meaning remains, for the song was written as an exercise of faith and joy, not as an exercise in proper Latin usage.
@lichtbroeder Well, obviously the pronunciation varied tremendously over Europe in the Middle Ages; but if you are an experienced chorist you know that the pronunciation of Latin usually is adapted to the origin of the piece. If you are singing Fauré's Requiem you're Latin should have a French touch, but when you're singing Verdi it's more appropriate to use "Italian" Latin. Gaudete has its origins in Sweden and should therefore be sung with a Scandinavian pronunciation (preferably Swedish).
@moltoallegro19 Our German choir is singing macaronic songs by Praetorius. We do not sing the Latin parts with a German "pronunciation". My point with Gaudete was that average people for centuries did sing Latin with regional "sounds" or errors in pronunciation. The Gaudete that we hear in this video (or by Steeleye Span for that matter) may not be "perfect" linguistically, but it is enjoyable, reverent, human, and would have been heard in churches centuries ago. It need not be criticized.
@lichtbroeder Well, most professional choirs strive to so, anyways (not saying your's is not). But let me just say that such an American accent that we hear in this video would not have been heard centuries ago and that the Gaudete was not widely spread outside Scandinavia until the 19th century.
I really enjoy this version. You have an awesome voice in all voice parts, that's incredible! Lol, I wish there were 3 of you so I could listen to you as a choir live! XD
@lichtbroeder May Allah's Peace and blessing be upon holy Prophet Jesus Christ and his holy virgin mother Mariam. Peace and love for those of believe truth and stand justice and universal love.xx

Hey zaardele - please please I beg you to upload you singing this, you seem to be an amazing singer with your comments - if you admit you arent a good singer then please keep your damn comments to your selfish self!!!
@zaardele Obviously no one let you know as a child that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. If you don't like it, there's no call to make very cruel remarks about an amateur's voice. (By the way, amateur literally comes from the word 'love', ie. someone who just does something because they love it, not because they get paid. I'm sure that in a few years, this will not be as good as what the singer will become capable of. But the way to improve is not to beat down.)
I'd like to do a layered version of this myself but I'm concious that it grates on peoples nerves when the words are "wrong". Can someone guide me to a guide or tell me what to look out for in my version?
@Avalon888 There is no correct pronouciation as such since latin is still a living language and it is difficult know precisely how the prayer would have been sung many centuries ago. Try consulting a Roman Catholic priest. Latin is still commonly spoken in the Church
Holy crap. I heard this, and then tried to find it on Ares so I could download it. Then I read the side message and it said that you yourself sung this. O.O
You did a terrific job. : ) And to everybody who is bitching about the pronounciation - for Christ's sake (no pun)! It's sung in a fucking dead language in an extinct form (Medieval Latin)! They don't have a course in Medieval/Renaissance Latin at every university, so cut her some slack.
It is a beautiful song, and every new version is welcome.
There is no such thing as a correct pronunciation of medieval Latin: these lyrics were composed in central Europe and collected in England. Steeleye Span chose a pronuncaition which suited them; this is the correct procedure.
I'm really surprised by some of the comments here. The singing is incredibly beautiful, nicely harmonized - what a great job.
As for the pronunciation: it's actually pretty good. Secondly, Claudia didn't claim that her's is perfect, in fact she clearly stated the opposite, didn't she? This leaves me with the conclusion, that the folks here, who negatively commented on the pronunciation, have a problem with their reading.
i don't really want hurt people's feelings.. i want only aid our lady with latin... you could halp me with english.. i'm not a good english speaker! i apologise if i hurt someone.. forgive me for my bad english!
Everybody stop bitching about the pronunciation it's incredibly hair-splitty and annoying. Nobody knows, the language is no longer spoken much. Go ask someone from the vatican before you proclaim your terminal knowledge of Latin.
Holy shit. Umm can we get married? I have skype. You done this song formidable justice :)

Another one that would be great is St Patrick's Breastplate - I bind to thee my country. Your voice would really suit that.
This one is great, though!

Just logical, right?

thehillcefis - I know you are but don't hurt people's feelings. I've studied Latin but prefer to post in English on this site.

The singer has already said that her pronunciation is not perfect so please stop criticising her. Her voice is really nice.
All those getting upset, why don't you post a video of your own singing? That would be interesting.

bad pronunciation!!! english-speakers! let's learn latin!

Everybody stop bitching about the pronunciation it's incredibly hair-splitty and annoying. Nobody knows, the language is no longer spoken much. Go ask someone from the vatican before you proclaim your terminal knowledge of Latin.
