Everything you saw is still done like it is today with a few added conveniences of GPS and such, but underway replenishments are done the same and loading weapons, etc..
Man, oh, man. What wonderful days. I never served on a Gearing Class Can. I spent a few years on a Fletcher Can in the Pineapple Fleet. Regardless, they all rolled and pitched the same - and standing at the bullnose when making 15-20 knots around the midwatch was a total trip. Not sure that my knees would take the pounding, but the air would sure clear my head.
I was in a little before this was made. I was on a pre FRAM DDE, the USS RICH, DDE820. We were in on the Cuban Missile Crisis. I loved Tin Can Duty. As a BMSN, I was on the helm a lot but never had to worry about my deck crew, They knew their jobs well and went about them well. As this video says, we all learned several jobs aboard ship. I was also on the boat crew and loved to haul the liberty crews ashore. As part of an ASW Squadron, we saw a lot of ocean.
Brings back memories, all good. Served on USS William M. Wood DD-715, USS Claude V. Ricketts DDG-5 and USS Berleley DDG-15. Got tired of bouncing on the surface so I went fast attacks, USS Narwhal SSN-671.
I think I know a few of those old Salts hauling in the refualing hoses ..I sailed on those greyhounds from 65-68 USS DYESS DD 880-USS GLENNON DD840 T hen on to The Tender Puget Sound AD 38
I served aboard the USS Waldron DD699 and the USS J.P. Kennedy DD850 from Jan. 67 to Jan. 71. Sure am glad I found this video, brings back memories. If any body wants to support a fellow sea dog. I have a YouTube channel. Please check it out and become a subscriber. Just go to promoguy59, see you there.
my most difficult, physically demanding service in the Navy but i would gladly go back and serve aboard one again. Tight-nit group of sailors i served with on USS VESOLE DD878. Fram ll. 1971-1973. home-port Charleston SC.
Was a TM on 3 Sumners and 1 Gearing (USS Dyess DD880) when this film was made. I went in June 1970 and the opening sequence looks like it may have been filmed in Newport RI. All 4 ships were NRT by that time. They were rugged old ships that had seen better days but we could hang with the best of the newer cans in those days! Nothing like Destroyer Navy - Greyhound Navy - Proud Navy!!
Would love a project such as that. Spent 32 years in shipyards as a shipfitter, burner, welder and would be able to help a lot. Have visited a few, the USS Kidd in Baron Rouge was very interesting.
Thing is, I live in Québec, Canada and commuting would be a problem...LOL
Thanx for the offer.........Jim Carten, St-Jean-Chrysostome, Québec
@Roadrunnerdeux Our field day events in Fall River, MA in May and October offer live aboard options and make a trip worth it as they are Wen to Sunday events. It might be worthwhile sometime
Nice to see my old ship in the video. Bordelon 881. Brought back lots of memories. Got a chuckle out of guys hauling in lines in their dress blues. Never happened, except in public affairs films !!!!
@dodger8ny You must have been West Coast. On the east Coast,at least in USS Mahan DDG 42,we were in whites or blues depending on the time of year for Sea and Anchor detail. The only time we wore dungarees for those evolutions was during pier shifts,or when we were down in Gitmo for refresher training.

How much of this is still as it was?
Aside from the obvious differences, such as women being largely represented.
How much much of this is still true today?

My hubby is a Marine....Gawd! How I hated to say good-bye!
(Although he's 72 years old now; he said he's never regretted being in the Corps.)
God Bless all of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guard and Marines!
