Analyze it, figure out what the author is really trying to say, re read the poem and see if I still like it. It's a literary tool that some authors/poets use. I myself write poetry, epic poems that say what they mean, through telling a story. My stories tell of perseverance and faith in God, in one of my poems I go through the book of Revelations, and I love it! I totally get what you mean though, sometimes I just want to veg out and relax my brain, thats why I play video games or play drums.
