The main characters were FOUR in number. But to be honest, it's not about the numbers. Any number of swashbuckling characters peppered the book. Though Dumas did not include a female sword-wielding heroine, he probably wouldn't mind. He liked daring tales and included a fierce female antagonist for his time--the Lady D'Winter.
