the number one detrerminer of talent is not technical skill... it's song writing, simply pulling something from out of your brain, making the sound that you hear in your head come out, writing something that means something to yourself, and hopefully someone else will remember it and sing along someday... Sonic Youth doesn't just use distortion, they build their own guitars, experiment with sound in all kinds of way, they can turn feedback into a symphony...

@WayToTheGrave METAL is the best genre of music. Helloween has more talent than 99% of all these indie bands COMBINED. Just listen to "Keeper of the 7 Keys". It is more than music, it's musical art.

@AlmigthyIsDead Listen to Keepers. It is an amazing song, and yes, it does have a real message. Sonic Youth, on the other hand, doesn't do any real guitar solos. About the fast shredding, that is talent, but other things are too. Guitars are kinda like NFL defensive backs. Fast means talented all the time, but you don't have to be fast to be really good. Keepers has only one 1-minute long "superfast shred" and it's an 11 minute song.

I think discussions that concern musical taste can never be resolved because there's no absolute truth to be found here. What means musical quality to one person might mean the opposite to another. To try to decide whether this can be called "music" or "good music" is irrelevant since there can be as many answers as there are people. For some it is, for some it's not. What musical quality is can never be singled out and put up as an indesputable fact .

@AlmigthyIsDead Listen to Keepers. It is an amazing song, and yes, it does have a real message. Sonic Youth, on the other hand, doesn't do any real guitar solos. About the fast shredding, that is talent, but other things are too. Guitars are kinda like NFL defensive backs. Fast means talented all the time, but you don't have to be fast to be really good. Keepers has only one 1-minute long "superfast shred" and it's an 11 minute song.

Actually, "That's very clear" is a complete sentence. If you remember 3rd grade, which shouldn't be that hard for you, you should recall that a sentence has a subject, verb, and an object. In this case, "that" is the subject, "is" is the verb, "clear" is the object, and you're a fucking idiot. And, obviously there are going to be some grammatical issues, as I am writing as I would speak since this a forum of discussion. Go take a lot of dicks up your ass.

Theory simply explains why musics works the way it does, the knowledge of it may or may not make you a better player,There are thousands of music professors out the that know it backwards and forwards yet they have added little or nothing to music conversely there are stellar musicians such as Hendrix Charlie Parker John Coltrain etc. who knew little or no theory at all but there immortalized greats-The theorist then dissect there music and say Ah Ha thats genius!!- Such as it is.Peace

Originality is rewarded far more than technique in our age.
But the better your technique, and the more you know about your instrument, the better you know what your possibilities are when creating music.
If you can play flamenco, rock, plain chords etc. You have more chance of making an original "riff" than when you only know A,D,E or something.
Especially nowadays that's important, since almost every "plain" riff already exists.

I think discussions that concern musical taste can never be resolved because there's no absolute truth to be found here. What means musical quality to one person might mean the opposite to another. To try to decide whether this can be called "music" or "good music" is irrelevant since there can be as many answers as there are people. For some it is, for some it's not. What musical quality is can never be singled out and put up as an indesputable fact .
