By the way, HP100ify up there is being one. It takes good knowledge and skill to get an old computer like the one in this video up and running again. Hopefully Linux Mint can breathe new life in an old laptop I'm getting tomorrow.

while i appreciate your excitement with this laptop, I am afraid you are in for more frustration than you will enjoyment. having ha A compaq Presario from 1998(233mhz pII with 194mb ram and a 40gb 4200rpm hdd) running all the way to 2008, windows XP was a slug, and internet was near impossible. I can assure you in today's computing world this will not work. save about 80$ and buy a used Pentium 4 or Athlon processor system with at least 512mb ram and be able to somewhat enjoy!

Saving older technology can save you in a pinch. I might have been short necessary internet access for a while were it not for a twelve year old dell. I have two, older, ninety eight gaming machines (screw good old games, I'm playing Grim Fandango), and yet another old xp computer acting as a routing gateway server (at least it was) for several websites. Some of us stranger folk collect older hardware, I'm still looking for replacement voodoo2's.

If it's saying the clock is going weird, it's not talking about the main battery but the RTC button cell battery inside, which are easy to replace. As for the OS, if you don't mind doing a fair bit of work with Terminal try Damn Small Linux. It's pretty much got whay Debian has.

WOW! I have that exact same laptop, except mine is a 501DX! Cool! We are the only 2 YouTubers with these laptops. lol! Mine was made in January of 1999 - when was yours made?

I'm a computer guru, so you can believe me when I say this: a newer OS will NOT make that laptop faster! Do not run Windows XP on it, unless you want a 5 minute boot up time, 5 minutes for a program to load, and frequent freezes. If you have at least 64 MB of RAN, Windows 2000 should run OK on it.

Also, if the battery doesn't hold at least a 1 hour charge, don't put that battery in it, just keep it out. If you keep it in (and this happened to me), the charging system will overload, melting the soldering points for the AC adapter jack. I have to solder mine back up. They still sell batteries for this laptop, although they are expensive.

Yes, the stereo sound is excellent for a laptop of this age, and the "boom box" feature is great!

The 502DX came standard with an Intel Pentium MMX running at 266 MHz, 32 MB of RAM (that can be upgraded to 128 MB), and a 4.1 GB hard drive. What hard drive and RAM is in yours?

Yeah, Windows 98SE, NT 4, Me, and 2000 will work fine on this laptop. (You will want at least 64 MB of RAM for Me and 2000.) I am running Windows Me and Linux on mine, which has been upgraded to 128 MB of RAM.
