Ouch, no Franchot Tone! He had his pick of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis and he chose Crawford. Many of his films are hard to get a hold of now but he was gorgeous! You have a great vid here with fantastic music, I'd like to see you extend it to 25 and add a few other deserving men like Warren Beaty and Peter O'Toole as mentioned. And am I crazy or does Fred Astaire belong here too? :)
@Zombie00Goddess Oh yes sister, me too. I would put John Garfield # 1 on my list as well. I don't like the "pretty boy" look myself. I prefer a man to look like a man, kind of rough and tough around the edges, but still handsome. That was Garfield, and he had real sex appeal. It is said that after Four Daughters was released in 1938 the women just "threw themselves" at him. From what I have read about him, he didn't resist their advances either. An amazing actor & a hot guy too.
no james dean number one all the way! marlon easy 2 compared to him. Dean just had that charming cool demeanor about him and it made him more attractive and mysterious
Great job! Glad to see Marlon #1. All of your choices are certainly reasonable. I would l have loved to see Ronald Colman on this list. There are others you could argue for--maybe next time limit to 30! Thanks so much for making this. It was wonderful to go back in time.
You have absolutely WONDERFUL taste! The video is put together quite eloquently. Plus, I love the music choice. Such a wonderful job... I'm impressed!
Wow I'd love to see them all, the most handsome men all of time. They had naturally and originally face LOL It reminds me of korean artist, I happen to think about them, you should check them out how they try so hard to be like these by doing plastic surgery LOL What a stupid way!!
Your lists are fab and I'm grateful for the effort you put into them! I agree almost, but for me Monty would be number one, and Errol Flynn would be waaaaaay higher. Gene Kelly and Frederic March above Errol? There are a few romantic comedies Flynn did like Never Say Goodbye, that show him so much better than the action movies. But I love seeing James Dean at number 2 - yes!!!! Cary should be higher in my book too. JMO- it's all fun. :)
Caryy Grant was handsome in his 80's... Marlon Brando in his later years? Gary Cooper was gorgeous but had a bad face lift... Errol Flynn also handsome, but looked worn out when he died @ 50... Poor Rock Hudson too @ the end of his life... Rudy was smashing, but the films you showed had too much pancake...
All great choices, and I did enjoy it. Thanks for posting. But Cary Grant is undoubtedly #1, followed by Errol FLynn and Tyrone Power in a toss up for #s 2 and 3.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" That is so true in this list. I agree that the actors should be listed alphabetically or by birth date so not to offend any one. I would have included Alain Delon and Robert Wagner. I would also put highher in the list Paul Newman, Tony Curtis Gregory Peck and Cary Grant. There may be hansdsome actors today too. But these were real movie stars and great actors.
Interesting top 3--the 50's. I would eliminate Burt Lancaster, Errol Flynn, and Rudolph Valentino. And include Leslie Howard, Joseph Cotton, and Orson Welles.
Don't disagree as to content, although I would have added a few. Where's Yule Brenner? In the future, can you post them alphabetically or by birthdate? To not do so is just too subjective.
I agree with 18 of the 20 man on your list but not in the same order. I don't consider James Dean and Marlon Brando as handsome, but more like adults versions of teen hearthrobs. Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power, Laurence Olivier and Gregory Peck are my favorites from your list. I guess we cannot all have the same taste otherwise it would be boring and sad for some people.
Wow!...this takes me back to better times! Some here I would not have included, some left off that I would have included.... (where is Alan Ladd??) TYRONE POWER is absolutely Number One for me, followed by Robert Taylor and Gregory Peck. In addition to their good looks, all these guys were great actors. Today's stars just don't stack up to these gorgeous fellas!
I love your videosI You have a great taste in films and beauty. I’ve also seen your montage about beautiful actresses pre 1960. Both are wonderful but why 50 actresses and only 20 actors? I agree with you (again!)with your top 3 but James Dean have always been my absolute favorite. I encourage you to do another montage with 30 more handsome men!
@MrChinesecrested Seriously, Do you think that Ronald Reagan was the most handsome actor ever seen on the screen before 1960? And I don't want to begin talking about politics...
1.john derek in ambush at tomahawk gap. 2.marlon brando in a street car 3.montgomery clift in i confess 4.robert wagner in a kiss before dying 5.yul brynner in solomon and sheba 6.vince edwards in night holds terror 7.clark gable in it happened on night 8.alan ladd in this gun for hire 9.gregory peck in duel in the sun 10.kirk douglas in strangers when we meet 11.rock hudson in all that heaven allows. 12.cary grant in to catch a thief
It was nice to see Gregory Peck on this list. Seeing Gene Kelly was a surprise but he was good-looking. But I don't see how anyone but Cary Grant could be #1. He looked absolutely perfect. :)
omg, all my dream husbands are on here,i love your video, they have made late night movies fun to watch,i have see many of their films and never tire of them, especially by james dean, monty cliff and tyroe power, ahhhh dreamyyyyyyy
Great list and you do have good taste. :-) Personal taste - it's all subjective. My top 10: 1. Cary Grant 2. Paul Newman 3. Laurence Olivier 4. Henry Fonda (check him out in the 30's and 40's - he was BEAUTIFUL) 5. Gene Kelly (my personal favorite, but up against Cary? Nah....) 6. Clark Gable 7 Jimmy Stewart 8. Jeff Chandler 9. James Dean 10. John Gilbert 11. Tony Curtis (I had to slip that one in there) Notice a trend toward dark eyes, dark hair? :-)
@quelle23 BOGART, wasn't "handsome"...he was a short, little, bald guy..but he did have a certain look, a certain presence about him on screen and the sound of his voice attracted him to the opposite sex..i'm not knocking BOGIE, i have almost every movie he made..i'm just telling the truth..HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU KID.
@sns21274 Valentino and Dean both smoked. This ruins your skin, especially the skin on your face. Smokers get those sunburst lines around their mouth that even plastic surgery and fillers cannot fix.
@sns21274 GRANT AND NEWMAN, took care of themselves while GABLE, did not..i read he smoked anything he could light up and was a heavy drinker.. that and working on the movie "THE MISFITS" and putting up with MARILYN MONROE on that set lead to his death...
@sns21274 i was kinda joking when i wrote that but you're right..in the early 30's right after "DRACULA" came out BELA LUGOSI, was considered the sexiest man in HOLLYWOOD...it was said he stopped the room when he walked in..KARLOFF, as i said, in his early years was not a bad looking guy several photos reveal that...LUGOSI, was unusual..KARLOFF, was pretty steady..
@801liveable Are you aware that Valentino was considered for the role in "Dracula", but didn't live long enough to do the part? I like Lugosi, but Valentino would have taken the role to a completely different level, due to the fact that Dracula seduced his women victims. Valentino would have excelled at this.
@msrudyfan in terms of looks, yeah, VALENTINO, would have been interesting in "DRACULA".he wasn't that tall..LUGOSI, was 6'-1''.but the most important factor would have been his voice.how did VALENTINO, sound on film.many silent screen stars were out of a job when the "talkies" arrived. the first person considered for "DRACULA" was LON CHANEY SR. he passed the sound test in "THE UNHOLY THREE", 1930.too bad he died shortly after. just a little bit of film history, if you're interested.
@801liveable Valentino was 5'11" tall. The only known recordings of his voice are 2 songs he recorded, which you can find online. He has a deep baritone-bass voice. His voice was so seductive that during his divorce trial from Jean Acker, when he first started testifying several women spectators fainted. Every writer who wrote about his voice said it added to his allure. His mother was French, father Italian. He grew up speaking both languages and had a pleasant, Continental accent.
where's BORIS KARLOFF? just kidding..had to throw that in..VERY GOOD LIST..THANK YOU!..really, KARLOFF in his younger days was not a bad looking guy..
my all time sexy favourite guys marlon brando paul newman and gregory peck not only just pure sex and lust in younger days but amazing actors too i wish james dean live longer just wonder how his career will turns they dont make that kind of men anymore
Marlon Brando has one of those faces that no matter what time he lived him, he would HAVE to be on whoevers top-20 most handsome guys of whatever-era. He just oozed masculinity!!
If you've seen him in "Dragonwyck", you might include Vincent Price. People think of him only in later horror films, such as "Dr. Phibes", but he was pretty hot when he was younger.
Thought this was a great collection! I didn't think Fredrick March was all that handsome, but that's just me. Otherwise, you "did good." I'm sure there are other actors I thought were handsome, but can't think of them right now.
I don't know who made this list, But The king ( Gable ) belongs at top. followed by people like Flynn and Ty Power. The list should start with the old actors first, to put Brando in front of Gable, Power, Grant or Flynn isn't right....
Pleased to see John Garfield as the first. He was as talented as he was stunning, and there was nothing traditional or "white bread" about him. Dean, Brando, DeNiro, Pacino...they all owe him so much.
Are these in your personal order of preference? I agree with all your choices, but my order would be somewhat different. It's amazing which of these aged well (Grant, Gable, Newman) , which did not (Brando), and which never had the chance (Dean and Valentino).
Marlon Brando number one?!!! Where was Elvis? The list was about the handsomest, not the best actors! Geez! Cary Grant should have been higher than Clark Gable (Heck, even Rock Hudson should've been higher than the self-proclaimed former king of hollywood - among others, cause these guys had naturally great teeth and no halitosis).
@pistolpat11569 I know this list was the most handsome actors, because I made it. And all I know is that I myself would watch Gable all day, than Grant. As for Elvis I don't have his films so I couldn't include him. And as for Brando- he beats them all at everything- looks, sex appeal, and acting.
@MonroeSmile You're entitled to your opinion, but excluding Elvis just because you didn't have his films is not an excuse. Gable is more appeal than good looks - the epitome of the chauvinistic womanizer. And Brando may be one, if not the best, actor/s of all time but he can hardly match Cary's fashion sense even during his youth. Build-wise, Grant was just as muscular as the 1950's Brando, but taller. Handsomest means looks more than appeal so Grant shouldve ranked higher than the two.
@pistolpat11569 I meant as in if I made a Top 20 Sexiest Actors, or Best Actors, or Handsomest, Brando would have one. And I'd have got so many people complaining if I just had a photo of Elvis saying no.2. I included actors I had clips of. If you can do a better job, make your own. Yes you're entitled to your opinion, but don't talk to me like I'm an idiot.
@MonroeSmile You need not apologize for YOUR list since, in my opinion, you got the most important one right, MARLON BRANDO #1. Thats his rightful place; he is the sexiest, most beautiful, most charismatic actor of all; STARS were starstruck over him! They say it got so hushed and people would just stare at him when he walked into a celebrity party. He tops women's and MEN's most beautiful list, always; 1, 2, or 3!!! Don't care how fat he got or his attire, he was THE ONE!
@MonroeSmile As you say, this is 'your' list, so it is comprised of the actors you think are handsomest, which doesn't necessarily mean all are great thespians, even though many are unquestionably.
Gosh, I'd forgotten how good-looking "Coop" was when younger, thinking of him more in the "High Noon" era.
@gymnastix Tell me about it. I was shocked when I saw him in Morocco (1931) because I was so familiar with him, as you said, in High Noon. Thanks for your comment and for watching :)
@gymnastix Have you seen Gary Cooper in "Morocco", with Marlene Dietrich? This is my favorite of his performances--he is very hot and so is she. Marlene kisses another woman on the mouth, while wearing a tuxedo. Adolphe Menjou also stars as Dietrich's boyfriend. You will love the ending. Also, with Patricia Neal in "Fountainhead", the unauthorized biography (not in name though) of Frank Lloyd Wright? Also I have read that Coop, like Valentino, became visibly aroused in love scenes.
@msrudyfan I may have seen the film years ago when I was a kid, saw so many old films on broadcast television in the pre-cable days, when local affiliates ran "Dialing For Dollars" film showcase programs, that combined films with money-winning contests.
@msrudyfan They sometimes aired Turner Classic Movies (TCM)-level classics, and lots of B-grade films ("Francis The Talking Mule" and "Ma & Pa Kettle" series', "Bedtime For Bonzo," etc., lots of Universal films) like one sees today on THIS TV, even if the prints weren't always the best.
But I'll have to track that one down. Because if I did see it, it's been so long I've forgotten. Is it still in circulation, or rentable on DVD/VHS, do you know? Or maybe it's viewable on Amazon?
@msrudyfan Thanks for the recommendation. And since, by your handle, I can tell you're a Valentino fan (unless the "Rudy" is for Vallee or Nureyev?), I should tell you I did see either "Son Of The Shiek" or "Four Horsemen" in a "History Through The Media" course I took at a community college, before transferring to a 4-yr. university.
@msrudyfan That remains one of my favorite college courses, saw selected films representing different periods of American history--the Valentino film for the 1920s, "Dead End" for the Depression era, "Casablanca" for World War II, "Dr. Strangelove" for the Cold War, "The Graduate" for the 1960s, etc.
By the way, "Plastics, my son, the future is in plastics!," or something like that. More people remember "Mrs. Robinson, I think you're trying to seduce me," though.
@MonroeSmile I've always thought Monty Clift was everything James Dean pretended to be. Dean was a looker, sure. But he only made three films.
And frankly, I'm not much on "Method." Just put on your damn shoes and don't tell me how it feels to be a shoe! I also think Brando and DeNiro are over-rated, will take Gable, Spencer Tracy and Jimmy Stewart any old day of the week, over pretentious blow-hards..
@gymnastix Hahahaha, I can't agree with you on the DeNiro and Brando front I'm afraid. But the way Hollywood made such a fuss about method acting does annoy me. I love the fact that when Dustin Hoffman was talking about the 'method' to Laurence Olivier on the set of Marathon Man, Olivier replied 'my dear boy it's called acting'.
@MonroeSmile Right, and I would argue that Hoffman is a great character actor anyway, "The Method" aside. Hoffman is what real acting is about, not necessarily a great looker, but will always find work because he adheres to Bette Davis' aesthetic that the real actors are character actors. It's just that Hoffman is a character actor who can still command top billing.
@MonroeSmile Some others I would definitely add, based on at least a purely physical aesthetic, are: Brandon De Wilde, Josh Hartnett, Tab Hunter, Christopher Jones, Val Kilmer, Ashton Kutcher, Heath Ledger, David & Ricky Nelson, and River Phoenix.
I realize Hartnett, Jones, Kilmer, Kutcher, Ledger and Phoenix don't qualify for your pre-1960 list, but perhaps would on an "all-time" list.
@gymnastix Ahh definitely. I have always wanted to do a modern actors/ actresses list, but as you can see from my channel, most of my films are from pre-1960. I have been trying to build up my modern films already this year, and when I have the right clips, I will definitely make one.
@MonroeSmile I'm partial to pre-1960 films too. And I will usually, invariably, be attracted to a black & white film over a technicolor spectacular; not that there weren't plenty of color films pre-1960, nor many b&w films post-1960. I'm the same way with television--give me monochrome, especially late at night, as my eyes can't take the brilliant assault of the rainbow.
I think most film critics would agree De Wilde, Ledger, and Phoenix were bound for greatness; Jones was too fragile, even with so much promise. The Nelson Bros. did some fine work too--Ricky as "Colorado" in "Rio Bravo," and as a boy in "Story Of Three Lives," Dave as the psycho trapezist in "The Big Circus," and in Jack Webb's "-30," in addition to both bros' great comic timing in the legendary TV sitcom "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet."
I almost totally agree with your top 5 only I'd put James Dean at number 5 because he was boyishly cute and almost harmless looking but not mannishly handsome or hot. But yes, yes Brando belongs at number ONE and in the footage MonroeSmile provided Brando looks so modern somehow. I think because Brando comes across as very natural, relaxed and loose in that footage. And Paul Newman had some beautiful full lips, I never paid attention to them before!
Hi, everybody says their favorite in No. 1, but I ABSOLUTELY agree on Marlon Brando in pos #1, he could MELT a stone because not only he is handsome but so out-of-this-world sexy, if pure sexual attraction could become a person, it would be him, the others are handsome yes but not as primitive-instinct-activator as Brando haha.
What is truly sad about the film industry today is that because of CGI we will never see roles that made these fine actors shine. Intimate films like "To Kill a Mockingbird".
My favorites? Peck, Grant, Flynn, Taylor. God! We had the best in our era didn't we!!!
there were some sexy actors out there it's a shame most of them aren't alive anymore

quelle23 5 months ago
@quelle23 BOGART, wasn't "handsome"...he was a short, little, bald guy..but he did have a certain look, a certain presence about him on screen and the sound of his voice attracted him to the opposite sex..i'm not knocking BOGIE, i have almost every movie he made..i'm just telling the truth..HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU KID.
801liveable 5 months ago
@sns21274 Valentino and Dean both smoked. This ruins your skin, especially the skin on your face. Smokers get those sunburst lines around their mouth that even plastic surgery and fillers cannot fix.

Tyrone Power was too Good-Looking to be true! I remember him well; who could forget? Love, Liz

Very nice video! Marlon Brando totally deserves to be number one!
And Montgomery Clift is also quite good looking!
One criticism I have is that Yul Brynner was not included in this video. He was very hot and deserves to be in it.
spaciousgalaxy 5 months ago
@sns21274 GRANT AND NEWMAN, took care of themselves while GABLE, did not..i read he smoked anything he could light up and was a heavy drinker.. that and working on the movie "THE MISFITS" and putting up with MARILYN MONROE on that set lead to his death...
801liveable 5 months ago
@sns21274 do you like "THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE" GARFIELD and LANA TURNER?
801liveable 5 months ago
@sns21274 i was kinda joking when i wrote that but you're right..in the early 30's right after "DRACULA" came out BELA LUGOSI, was considered the sexiest man in HOLLYWOOD...it was said he stopped the room when he walked in..KARLOFF, as i said, in his early years was not a bad looking guy several photos reveal that...LUGOSI, was unusual..KARLOFF, was pretty steady..
801liveable 5 months ago
@801liveable Are you aware that Valentino was considered for the role in "Dracula", but didn't live long enough to do the part? I like Lugosi, but Valentino would have taken the role to a completely different level, due to the fact that Dracula seduced his women victims. Valentino would have excelled at this.
msrudyfan 5 months ago
@msrudyfan in terms of looks, yeah, VALENTINO, would have been interesting in "DRACULA".he wasn't that tall..LUGOSI, was 6'-1''.but the most important factor would have been his voice.how did VALENTINO, sound on film.many silent screen stars were out of a job when the "talkies" arrived. the first person considered for "DRACULA" was LON CHANEY SR. he passed the sound test in "THE UNHOLY THREE", 1930.too bad he died shortly after. just a little bit of film history, if you're interested.
801liveable 5 months ago
@801liveable Valentino was 5'11" tall. The only known recordings of his voice are 2 songs he recorded, which you can find online. He has a deep baritone-bass voice. His voice was so seductive that during his divorce trial from Jean Acker, when he first started testifying several women spectators fainted. Every writer who wrote about his voice said it added to his allure. His mother was French, father Italian. He grew up speaking both languages and had a pleasant, Continental accent.

Marlon Brando has one of those faces that no matter what time he lived him, he would HAVE to be on whoevers top-20 most handsome guys of whatever-era. He just oozed masculinity!!
lyndyfu1124 6 months ago 2
If you've seen him in "Dragonwyck", you might include Vincent Price. People think of him only in later horror films, such as "Dr. Phibes", but he was pretty hot when he was younger.

Thought this was a great collection! I didn't think Fredrick March was all that handsome, but that's just me. Otherwise, you "did good." I'm sure there are other actors I thought were handsome, but can't think of them right now.

I don't know who made this list, But The king ( Gable ) belongs at top. followed by people like Flynn and Ty Power. The list should start with the old actors first, to put Brando in front of Gable, Power, Grant or Flynn isn't right....
detect9001 7 months ago
I didn't vote either way, but I think Dana Andrews should have been included.

@Chauzzle If I remake this Dana will definitely be in there. I didn't know who he was when I made this. Thanks for watching :)

Pleased to see John Garfield as the first. He was as talented as he was stunning, and there was nothing traditional or "white bread" about him. Dean, Brando, DeNiro, Pacino...they all owe him so much.
gropingwithastoker 7 months ago
Are these in your personal order of preference? I agree with all your choices, but my order would be somewhat different. It's amazing which of these aged well (Grant, Gable, Newman) , which did not (Brando), and which never had the chance (Dean and Valentino).

@msrudyfan Yes, this is my personal list. I'm glad you agree :) Thanks for watching x

TheAha1988 8 months ago
Marlon Brando number one?!!! Where was Elvis? The list was about the handsomest, not the best actors! Geez! Cary Grant should have been higher than Clark Gable (Heck, even Rock Hudson should've been higher than the self-proclaimed former king of hollywood - among others, cause these guys had naturally great teeth and no halitosis).
pistolpat11569 8 months ago
@pistolpat11569 I know this list was the most handsome actors, because I made it. And all I know is that I myself would watch Gable all day, than Grant. As for Elvis I don't have his films so I couldn't include him. And as for Brando- he beats them all at everything- looks, sex appeal, and acting.
MonroeSmile 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile You're entitled to your opinion, but excluding Elvis just because you didn't have his films is not an excuse. Gable is more appeal than good looks - the epitome of the chauvinistic womanizer. And Brando may be one, if not the best, actor/s of all time but he can hardly match Cary's fashion sense even during his youth. Build-wise, Grant was just as muscular as the 1950's Brando, but taller. Handsomest means looks more than appeal so Grant shouldve ranked higher than the two.
pistolpat11569 8 months ago
@pistolpat11569 I meant as in if I made a Top 20 Sexiest Actors, or Best Actors, or Handsomest, Brando would have one. And I'd have got so many people complaining if I just had a photo of Elvis saying no.2. I included actors I had clips of. If you can do a better job, make your own. Yes you're entitled to your opinion, but don't talk to me like I'm an idiot.
MonroeSmile 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile You need not apologize for YOUR list since, in my opinion, you got the most important one right, MARLON BRANDO #1. Thats his rightful place; he is the sexiest, most beautiful, most charismatic actor of all; STARS were starstruck over him! They say it got so hushed and people would just stare at him when he walked into a celebrity party. He tops women's and MEN's most beautiful list, always; 1, 2, or 3!!! Don't care how fat he got or his attire, he was THE ONE!
mdoranda 2 months ago
@MonroeSmile As you say, this is 'your' list, so it is comprised of the actors you think are handsomest, which doesn't necessarily mean all are great thespians, even though many are unquestionably.
Gosh, I'd forgotten how good-looking "Coop" was when younger, thinking of him more in the "High Noon" era.
gymnastix 8 months ago
@gymnastix Tell me about it. I was shocked when I saw him in Morocco (1931) because I was so familiar with him, as you said, in High Noon. Thanks for your comment and for watching :)
MonroeSmile 8 months ago
@gymnastix Have you seen Gary Cooper in "Morocco", with Marlene Dietrich? This is my favorite of his performances--he is very hot and so is she. Marlene kisses another woman on the mouth, while wearing a tuxedo. Adolphe Menjou also stars as Dietrich's boyfriend. You will love the ending. Also, with Patricia Neal in "Fountainhead", the unauthorized biography (not in name though) of Frank Lloyd Wright? Also I have read that Coop, like Valentino, became visibly aroused in love scenes.
msrudyfan 7 months ago
@msrudyfan I may have seen the film years ago when I was a kid, saw so many old films on broadcast television in the pre-cable days, when local affiliates ran "Dialing For Dollars" film showcase programs, that combined films with money-winning contests.
gymnastix 7 months ago
@msrudyfan They sometimes aired Turner Classic Movies (TCM)-level classics, and lots of B-grade films ("Francis The Talking Mule" and "Ma & Pa Kettle" series', "Bedtime For Bonzo," etc., lots of Universal films) like one sees today on THIS TV, even if the prints weren't always the best.
But I'll have to track that one down. Because if I did see it, it's been so long I've forgotten. Is it still in circulation, or rentable on DVD/VHS, do you know? Or maybe it's viewable on Amazon?
gymnastix 7 months ago
@msrudyfan Thanks for the recommendation. And since, by your handle, I can tell you're a Valentino fan (unless the "Rudy" is for Vallee or Nureyev?), I should tell you I did see either "Son Of The Shiek" or "Four Horsemen" in a "History Through The Media" course I took at a community college, before transferring to a 4-yr. university.
gymnastix 7 months ago
@msrudyfan That remains one of my favorite college courses, saw selected films representing different periods of American history--the Valentino film for the 1920s, "Dead End" for the Depression era, "Casablanca" for World War II, "Dr. Strangelove" for the Cold War, "The Graduate" for the 1960s, etc.
By the way, "Plastics, my son, the future is in plastics!," or something like that. More people remember "Mrs. Robinson, I think you're trying to seduce me," though.
gymnastix 7 months ago
@msrudyfan And "Elaine! Elaine!" has almost become another "Stell-a!" line, mocked in film parodies, etc. I'm assuming you've seen "The Graduate."
gymnastix 7 months ago
@MonroeSmile I've always thought Monty Clift was everything James Dean pretended to be. Dean was a looker, sure. But he only made three films.
And frankly, I'm not much on "Method." Just put on your damn shoes and don't tell me how it feels to be a shoe! I also think Brando and DeNiro are over-rated, will take Gable, Spencer Tracy and Jimmy Stewart any old day of the week, over pretentious blow-hards..
gymnastix 8 months ago
@gymnastix Hahahaha, I can't agree with you on the DeNiro and Brando front I'm afraid. But the way Hollywood made such a fuss about method acting does annoy me. I love the fact that when Dustin Hoffman was talking about the 'method' to Laurence Olivier on the set of Marathon Man, Olivier replied 'my dear boy it's called acting'.
MonroeSmile 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile Right, and I would argue that Hoffman is a great character actor anyway, "The Method" aside. Hoffman is what real acting is about, not necessarily a great looker, but will always find work because he adheres to Bette Davis' aesthetic that the real actors are character actors. It's just that Hoffman is a character actor who can still command top billing.
gymnastix 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile Some others I would definitely add, based on at least a purely physical aesthetic, are: Brandon De Wilde, Josh Hartnett, Tab Hunter, Christopher Jones, Val Kilmer, Ashton Kutcher, Heath Ledger, David & Ricky Nelson, and River Phoenix.
I realize Hartnett, Jones, Kilmer, Kutcher, Ledger and Phoenix don't qualify for your pre-1960 list, but perhaps would on an "all-time" list.
gymnastix 8 months ago
@gymnastix Ahh definitely. I have always wanted to do a modern actors/ actresses list, but as you can see from my channel, most of my films are from pre-1960. I have been trying to build up my modern films already this year, and when I have the right clips, I will definitely make one.
MonroeSmile 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile In general, though, I agree with your list. It would be hard to argue with so many great lookers, many of them also fine actors.
gymnastix 8 months ago
@MonroeSmile I'm partial to pre-1960 films too. And I will usually, invariably, be attracted to a black & white film over a technicolor spectacular; not that there weren't plenty of color films pre-1960, nor many b&w films post-1960. I'm the same way with television--give me monochrome, especially late at night, as my eyes can't take the brilliant assault of the rainbow.
gymnastix 8 months ago
I think most film critics would agree De Wilde, Ledger, and Phoenix were bound for greatness; Jones was too fragile, even with so much promise. The Nelson Bros. did some fine work too--Ricky as "Colorado" in "Rio Bravo," and as a boy in "Story Of Three Lives," Dave as the psycho trapezist in "The Big Circus," and in Jack Webb's "-30," in addition to both bros' great comic timing in the legendary TV sitcom "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet."

I had no idea that Laurence Olivier was so lovely in the face either and Gary Cooper was beautiful he looked like a model.
jrmetmoi 8 months ago
I almost totally agree with your top 5 only I'd put James Dean at number 5 because he was boyishly cute and almost harmless looking but not mannishly handsome or hot. But yes, yes Brando belongs at number ONE and in the footage MonroeSmile provided Brando looks so modern somehow. I think because Brando comes across as very natural, relaxed and loose in that footage. And Paul Newman had some beautiful full lips, I never paid attention to them before!

Even a lesbian has to ask where is Yul Brenner? Deviously sexy..how could a gal resist?

Hi, everybody says their favorite in No. 1, but I ABSOLUTELY agree on Marlon Brando in pos #1, he could MELT a stone because not only he is handsome but so out-of-this-world sexy, if pure sexual attraction could become a person, it would be him, the others are handsome yes but not as primitive-instinct-activator as Brando haha.

What is truly sad about the film industry today is that because of CGI we will never see roles that made these fine actors shine. Intimate films like "To Kill a Mockingbird".
