What kind of gas mileage do you get from the car, is it really as bad as they say so? I am between an S2000, RX-8 or E46 M3. I want a competitive car for autocross that's why I am leaning for the first two.
@LeontariF1 - My lifetime mileage excluding track days is 18 MPG. So, no it's not as bad as "they" say. This is NOT an economy car. This is a car for people who enjoy driving and want a car with astonishingly good handling and balance. If you are worried about gas mileage, buy a Prius.
rotary is more reliable than piston engines people, they just need proper maintenance and caring owners. its what every car needs, the car won't fix itself.
@crazyhinduguy - Only you can decide. I think it's a fantastic car, and I own two FD RX-7s too. But you have to decide what you want it for and if it fits your needs. Mazda's slogan before "Zoom Zoom" was "It Just Feels Right". Test drive a couple. Test drive a couple other cars. Long test drives. You'll know which one to get when it feels right. If the RX-8 feels right, buy it.
BMW driver wasn't taking to those turns with a lot of emphasis, pretty far off the apex in some spots, guess when you pay 100k for a car, you don't abuse it as much :)
@wankelbolt Just sayin.. :) I had a Turbo II that I drove the piss out of, it kept asking for more. It was honestly the funnest car in the turns, the rear would come around very predictably and it made for one fun run.
Wow your late apex at the end of the straight was very impressive it takes discipline to apex like that!! Nice driving, nothing like lighweight sports cars.
I have just sold my Bimmer and picking an RX8 up friday. Can't wait, I love them!
It just goes to show you- my RX8 was a fair but under £5000 and immaculate with only 30,000 miles on. An equivalent M5 would be about £22,000. And on the lovely twisty, turny roads where I live the RX8 would be quicker. They are such great value!

But, I enjoy the video, and I can't wait to get my own Rx8 here in the next few months.Oh, and I'm nearby VIR too, haha.Maybe we'll run into each other at some point.I know I'll be taking it there.
@mgrande11 - Thanks. Note: The engines are completely reliable and warrantied for eight years and 100,000 miles by Mazda.
Only the early 2004 engines had any problems and all problem engines were replaced under warranty. They are still covered by warranty until 2012.
I have 40,000 miles on my original 2005 engine, of which almost 6,000 are on-track, full-throttle. My compression is just fine. And I'm covered until 2013. :-)
@wankelbolt i think many people are mis-informed about these engines reliability... theyre VERY reliable, when people know how to properly take care of a rotary engine and how to properly drive a rotary engine, otherwise its usually driver fault for not knowing enough about the cars making them SEEM unreliable when its really unreliable owners, granted in some cases youll find a car that had a genuine problem even with proper care.
@Zoidborg1 Too bad that puts too much stress within the housing. If you are looking into a good power gain without worrying about a rebuild every 30k, go withe a supercharger.
@rotarynerd - A turbo does not put any more stress on the "housing" than a supercharger does. Turbos have some key advantages over superchargers on a rotary engine. I studied the question for a year and decided to go turbo. The trick is that you have to build a complete SYSTEM, which means big radiator, big fuel pump, big injectors, upgraded ignition. Then get proper instrumentation and professional, conservative tuning. I expect 300+ completely reliable RWHP with a conservative tune.
ok not fair , the beemer driver was in way over his head . most likely scared a bit to push it in the corners and that beemer seemed to be bulky in the turns any way. but great vid any way I luv dash cam stuff shows that the rx8 has great bang for buck. handles very very well.
Nope, no qualifications. I didnt realize this video was 2 years old when I posted that but, I hope you dont just sit on your credentials and assume your a great driver. Hey dude, I dont want to be insulting because I have an RX as well, but if you have the $ it only takes a few of the correct mods and you wont be too far behind the Beamer on the straights. Your car handles way better that his to. Intake, cluthc including flywheel, exhaust, pulleys, chip, plugs and wires and that makes a significant difference and you can get all that done around 5k depending on your connections and what not. The RX only has a 1.3 for all u haters.
@anphelps27: Thanks for the suggestion. I'm quite familiar with what can be done. An intake will do virtually nothing on the RX-8. It is nearly perfect from the factory. Read Racing Beat's analysis of it. Even with all the mods you speak of, only 10 or 15 more horses can be found. Mazda really wrung it out. I'm in the process of going turbo, overbuilding it with a target of 360 *reliable* horsepower. Easily achieved. Then nothing but GTRs and GT3s will get away from me.
@wankelbolt Your totally correct about the intake dude. Pointless. Just makes it louder, but I did those mods to my car and got an extra 24HP. I am afraid of turbos because of the RX7. I dont know of any other mods I can do except a turbo. Man, if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them dude. I dont know what else to do without cracking the engine.
@wankelbolt I am in the process of body work right now. When I get done I am going to post a vid with my car. I am stuck on performance so I am looking for ideas. And fuck all those haters out there that talk shit about the RX. All sport cars have their perks and they are all for different people. When I go to the mall I dont see 5 other RX8s in the lot. ROTARY POWER!!!!
I got an 8 and I'll say for a rear wheel car rx8 is more stable than any othe rwd cars. And especially thanks to DSC system. It really keep the car on the road.
@skodia, the base sport models did not come with DSC. My car does not have it. And on models that do have it, it can be turned off completely by holding the DSC Off button for several seconds.
@skodia, yours aren't base models. If you got any of the three option packages - Sport, Touring, or Grand Touring - It came with DSC. If you didn't opt for one of those, it did not come with DSC. Mine is a base 6MT, which has everything the Sport package has except DSC,HID headlights, and fog lights. I have ordinary halogen headlights and no fogs. Google a sales brochure and look at the features and options pages.
@skodia I'm about to buy an 8 and am looking at 2 models. A base w/ no DSC and a GT which of course has it.
I'm debating because I don't care about ANY of the luxuries of the GT but I want the DSC because I plan on tracking it and I don't have any experience at the track yet so it's a new hobby. Everyone there including me will be happier knowing I've got DSC on. Problem is though, the GT's weigh almost 200lbs more than the base models and that makes a difference. Can't decide.
@mpalm887: If you are buying it to track it, get the base without DSC. You will turn it off at the track anyway even with no experience. I tell my students to turn it off. (Unless they've got a 1/4 million $ car like the Aston Martin DBS that showed up one day...)
@skodia: Shinka is very nice. If they made one without a sunroof, I might have traded my base in on one. I can't fit in the sunroof cars with a helmet on. :-(
@mpalm887 The base model 5speed has 20 less hp than the 6speed... so don't get the standard base model, get the highpower one. I don't know which trims that offer the high-power engine, but the GT does.
Loved your video! Thumbs up :) I work as a lot attendant at a car dealership and we've got an RX-8 with an SR Motorsports package (pulleys, intake, some other stuff) and it's buy FAR my favourite car to drive. (others on our lot include a Roush Supercharged mustang, and several high powered mercedes.) Anyway, you did some great driving. How fast were you going down those straights?
@CptKookie: On a good lap I'll hit 130 mph indicated at the end of the main straight at VIR. The speedo consistently reads 2 mph high, so it's actually 128, GPS-confirmed.
This video was absolute fun to watch, just fantastic, and the SOUND AT 1:00 - 1:13 WAS JUST SUPERB, that B&B upgrade is something I definitely need to look into, awesome driving, was alot of fun to watch the comments and stuff :)
@yagam1, Uh, while I don't encourage anyone to jump off any buildings, it is in-fact a stock RENESIS engine inside that hood. If you keep your word, please make it a very short building.
@mr2drifking you laughing at my car? :p I barely got to 85mph, but I got 27mpg doing it. The really nice thing about the CVT was it kept the RPMs exactly where it needed to be and adjusted the gear ratio as needed to keep the engine at it's peak 60hp hehe. Although after 2 laps the battery pack was depleted so the IMA was drawing power from the gas engine to recharge it. After driving Spec Miatas I was pleasantly surprised at how neutral the handling was on it, and that was before the CRZ :)
@chris11aa22bb, I think the M5 has a "panic stop" warning system, might be triggered by the ABS. Under extreme braking it flashes the brake likes to try and warn following drivers.
Great vid, I actaully live 45 minutes west of danville. One day I would like to get into autocross. What safety equipment is needed, how hard is it to get your racing license?
i own a 2006 rx8 blue LOVE it ... im more about looks then performance but dont get me wrong even stock rx8's are pretty quick, there quickies, and toys haha i love it im afraid to get performance parts cuz ill end up "needing" something that goes with that part u know what i mean? like a turbo, ill have to mod that out, i love rx8's and clearly the bmw is faster but i guess ur the better driver? :]
lol rx7 vs m5...... then some sh*t box comes and takes over bouth! :D I know there is some savage spec list on that small tincan, and its pure track car, but it looked so funny
lol great job beating an e60 m5 on track with cheap jap rx8 with 230 hp or something, m5 driver is an instructor(so he knows how to drive obviously lol) so the only reason u caught up and passed him is because m5 driver is afraid of crashing that car. i own an e60 m5 and smokes stock rx8s all the time now i have c63
@burnoutmotorsport: Smoke them... until you get to a corner. ;) I'll be back at VIR Grand East in June 2010. Come on out and let's play! >-)
Do you have the new 6-speed manual? I instructed in one around VIR Full last Summer and was disappointed that after just two laps the computer announced "Transmission overheating! Engine power reduced." Manual overheating? What? Why? How? Why does it even have a temp sensor? Guess they need to call Borg Warner for a REAL trans. T-56 FTW. :-)
Nice video. Love the comments. I'd love to go to VIR in une for the grand east even, but I can afford to fix my car and make it ready for the track, OR take it to the track. can' do both which is what I want to do :) MSCW?
Thanks. Unfortunately it has not held up to track use. Tips have split and the muffler is all cracked up where the pipes exit it. Doesn't seem to leak, but will require some work. I expected more from a $1000 system. :-( Still sounds great. :-)
Dude i know exactly what your going through i had some faulty exhaust work done which created a bunch of rattling and clanging i eventually had to reinstall my stock exhaust because it was getting so bad, but best of luck man.
Man you are a real driver! The BMW dude fails on all apexes and s-es and also fails to follow racing line :-). RX8 is a fun car to drive but the thrill of M5 is superior to anything I've driven :-).
i love my rx8. my friend own a s2000. by comparison, a s2000 retain its value but the rx8 is more quiet and just as smooth. test drove a turbcharged evo and thats garbage. beat a 315 HP Cobra too... HA! lightweight and higher RPMs make a huge difference. bmw is lke a family luxury car. if youre single get a sport car
i need help on choosing a car i just went and saw the rx8 today and i loved it. its between the rx8 and the honda civic type r hatchback the older version. becasue i need to be able to at least fit 4 people in the car. if anyone has any ideas or any other cars i could choose from plz tell me.
gd video. I need help on choosing a car its either between the rx8 and the integra typer hatchback the old 1.because i wont the car to be able to fit at least 4 people. Any suggestions and any more cars that i could choose.
The RX8 is a great all around car. Its got decent performance and handles very well. Detractors seem always to forget the price of the car when comparing it to "others"
Thanks. The tiny car that passed us on the front straight was an older race-prepared BMW. It is completely gutted and on race-compound tires. The M5 and my RX-8 are stock on stock street tires.
He was leading because he wouldn't let me pass. This was a high-performance driving event where passes are only allowed when the leading driver gives you a point-by. He thought he could run away and hide with more than double my horsepower. He couldn't, and finally ate a little humble pie and let me pass.
very nice driving man i dont know what it is about people who drive german cars thier pride will not let them be on a road let someone by when clearly the are gettin owned course there is another video of a t2 fc at nuberg (sorry if i spelled it wrong) but it was 8 mins of this FC all over this 911 ass and he was clearly in way over his head but wouldnt let the FC driver by he eventually got around him that one was a great vid too
Lets be perfectly honest here, the M5 driver was off the mark. You could clearly see him only using the power on the straights and playing very conservatively on the corners. Credit where credit is due your driving was great but your mate could do with a little more practise if he wants to get the full beans out of the M5. I can assure you there is so much more in an M5 than was demonstrated here.
I know the M5 has more. I just drove a new M5 with the 6-speed true manual at VIR a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the transmission (a manual!) overheats after a few laps and the computer nannies take the power away. So all I have to do to beat it is wait for the M5 trans to overheat. ;-D
Yep that is actually very true. In fact the M5 trans doesn't actually overheat but the sensors cut the power to avoid damage very early.
It does depnd on the driving technique how quicky the power is limited but for track scenarios it's an inevitabilty. Big shame really as it is an awesome machine.
I like the rx8... nice but the m5 in a straight line is sweet... Most german cars are like this fast as hell on the straights, but slow in the corners...except m3 and 911 and thats about it... the 510 was dope though... I want one with an sr20... awesome. Good vid...
iif you understand what it is you will be buying then its the best idea... i cant imagine not owning an rx8 after owning it for almost year and half now.... it does require a little bit of mainting and care... however it is worth the money... the power is not as bad as people say... it weighs little so 180whp and 140lbs of torque... is not that bad... but i love it... honestly i feel safe driving that car ... cuz its so easy to handle no matter how hard you drive it...
I completely agree. I got mine back in 2003 and I still love behind the wheel of that thing, it's such a good time. And I also feel really safe in it despite it being so small because it's so easy to get out of harm's way with the way it handles and the awesome brakes. People that bitch about horsepower and 1/4 mile times can kiss my Irish ass
They work just fine in the snow. The limited-slip diff and even weight distribution keeps the wheels planted. The trick is you must have all-season mud + snow tires, or dedicated snow tires like Blizzaks. I know many people bought a dedicated set of 17" rims and skinny snow tires for Winter. (Cheaper than buying a truck. ;)
IDK why anyone would think drag racing is better than this. I've taken my Integra to the (circuit) track a couple times, it's a blast =] I'll have to video tape myself next time and post it.... if I ever go again, haha.
What club did you run this with? This is the first time I've ever seen VIR run one of the grand courses. And also, how's the brake fade on those hp plus pads?
If you can spend the cash and like the style, the 2009 RX-8 is better in every respect.
If you don't want to spend the cash for a new one, any of the 2005-2008 would be fine. Pick the options you like and the price you can afford. Avoid the 2004 unless the engine has been replaced.
Do NOT buy one that hasn't been driven hard! Unlike a pist-on engine, the Mazda Rotary DEMANDS redlining often OR IT WILL DIE. A redline a day keeps the mechanic away!
you know what? thats actually funny cuz i was about to buy a 2004 : x
ive heard some bad things about 08 and 09 models though....but then again it was probably from people that dont know a damn thing! lol so 04 new engine? like a new 13-B?
2004 would be OK, even if the engine hasn't been replaced, if the price is right. All 2004-2008 have 8-year, 100,000 mile engine core warranty. The engine is a RENESIS, an improvement on the 13B.
2008 and 2009 are different cars. I'm not aware of problems with either. In fact, the 2009 engine and handling are better than all before it, and the 2008 is no slouch. 2009 has a face only a mother could love, but all that is forgotten at the first high-speed sweeper. ;-)
i heard bad things about the apex seals on 04 models, i love my 07 model! come view it in one of my vids if you want. Send a friend request! Very nice driving wankelbot!
I agree with Rockit181, the RX8 is a very well handling car.. I have the 231 Hp version and it is fantastic to drive, in track and road.. The steering wheel feedback is PERFECT, so as the gear shift-ratio..
The only shame is the HP.. A so much well looking car should have been given at least 280 HP, such as the 350Z.. Mazda made it at 231, without turbo's, in order to increase engine credibility and by that, the rotary reputation..
Nevertheless, its a 100% pleasure to drive, no doubt !!!..

@wankelbolt oh really i have two of them and both of them have it, so i thought every rx8 has it.
skodia 1 year ago
@skodia, yours aren't base models. If you got any of the three option packages - Sport, Touring, or Grand Touring - It came with DSC. If you didn't opt for one of those, it did not come with DSC. Mine is a base 6MT, which has everything the Sport package has except DSC,HID headlights, and fog lights. I have ordinary halogen headlights and no fogs. Google a sales brochure and look at the features and options pages.
wankelbolt 1 year ago
@wankelbolt oh i see now, cuz i got one shinka edition and the other one grand touring.
skodia 1 year ago
@skodia I'm about to buy an 8 and am looking at 2 models. A base w/ no DSC and a GT which of course has it.
I'm debating because I don't care about ANY of the luxuries of the GT but I want the DSC because I plan on tracking it and I don't have any experience at the track yet so it's a new hobby. Everyone there including me will be happier knowing I've got DSC on. Problem is though, the GT's weigh almost 200lbs more than the base models and that makes a difference. Can't decide.
mpalm887 1 year ago
@mpalm887: If you are buying it to track it, get the base without DSC. You will turn it off at the track anyway even with no experience. I tell my students to turn it off. (Unless they've got a 1/4 million $ car like the Aston Martin DBS that showed up one day...)
@skodia: Shinka is very nice. If they made one without a sunroof, I might have traded my base in on one. I can't fit in the sunroof cars with a helmet on. :-(
wankelbolt 1 year ago

CptKookie 1 year ago
@CptKookie: On a good lap I'll hit 130 mph indicated at the end of the main straight at VIR. The speedo consistently reads 2 mph high, so it's actually 128, GPS-confirmed.

yagam1 1 year ago
@yagam1, Uh, while I don't encourage anyone to jump off any buildings, it is in-fact a stock RENESIS engine inside that hood. If you keep your word, please make it a very short building.

@wankerlbolt thx it rly helps having a panic break:P but what will the driver of the M5 do if the car behind him doesn't have such good breaks:P

0:09 LMAO!
mr2drifking 1 year ago
@mr2drifking you laughing at my car? :p I barely got to 85mph, but I got 27mpg doing it. The really nice thing about the CVT was it kept the RPMs exactly where it needed to be and adjusted the gear ratio as needed to keep the engine at it's peak 60hp hehe. Although after 2 laps the battery pack was depleted so the IMA was drawing power from the gas engine to recharge it. After driving Spec Miatas I was pleasantly surprised at how neutral the handling was on it, and that was before the CRZ :)
IbnFawzi 1 year ago
why does the lights of the M5 while breaking light once then a second light light up again ?
chris11aa22bb 1 year ago
@chris11aa22bb, I think the M5 has a "panic stop" warning system, might be triggered by the ABS. Under extreme braking it flashes the brake likes to try and warn following drivers.

lol great job beating an e60 m5 on track with cheap jap rx8 with 230 hp or something, m5 driver is an instructor(so he knows how to drive obviously lol) so the only reason u caught up and passed him is because m5 driver is afraid of crashing that car. i own an e60 m5 and smokes stock rx8s all the time now i have c63
burnoutmotorsport 2 years ago
@burnoutmotorsport: Smoke them... until you get to a corner. ;) I'll be back at VIR Grand East in June 2010. Come on out and let's play! >-)
Do you have the new 6-speed manual? I instructed in one around VIR Full last Summer and was disappointed that after just two laps the computer announced "Transmission overheating! Engine power reduced." Manual overheating? What? Why? How? Why does it even have a temp sensor? Guess they need to call Borg Warner for a REAL trans. T-56 FTW. :-)

pumpkinzer0 2 years ago 2
The RX8 is a great all around car. Its got decent performance and handles very well. Detractors seem always to forget the price of the car when comparing it to "others"
There was some nice driving on everyone's part

yeah, and they always dwell on straight-line acceleration. tools.

Yea, they don't get that there are other forms of besides a strait line and an oval. I love cars that can turn and stop.
110380michael 2 years ago 2
He has to slow down a lot at the turns because it's one heavy mo-fo. The RX8 though is pretty nimble when you take it through turns.
delitachan 2 years ago
very nice driving. But I'm more surprised how a tiny Datsun passed both you and the M5. was it racing modified?
SPHINX144 2 years ago
Thanks. The tiny car that passed us on the front straight was an older race-prepared BMW. It is completely gutted and on race-compound tires. The M5 and my RX-8 are stock on stock street tires.
wankelbolt 2 years ago
what was that third old school car. that guy left you both and probably costs half as much. track days are just fun though.
bigkicker33 2 years ago
the m5 driver missed every apex. he sucked ass. i love the rx8 though. sweet video
bgiber 2 years ago 15
@bgiber it wasn't the drivers fault, because the m5 is so heavy it tends to understeer alot
sk8erman007 1 year ago
dude it so obvious that m5 is faster.. it was like leading the whole time...i bet the m5 gave chance to the rx8..so obvious...
ucnkissmyass123 2 years ago
He was leading because he wouldn't let me pass. This was a high-performance driving event where passes are only allowed when the leading driver gives you a point-by. He thought he could run away and hide with more than double my horsepower. He couldn't, and finally ate a little humble pie and let me pass.

very nice driving man i dont know what it is about people who drive german cars thier pride will not let them be on a road let someone by when clearly the are gettin owned course there is another video of a t2 fc at nuberg (sorry if i spelled it wrong) but it was 8 mins of this FC all over this 911 ass and he was clearly in way over his head but wouldnt let the FC driver by he eventually got around him that one was a great vid too
rotarydriftdreams 2 years ago
Lets be perfectly honest here, the M5 driver was off the mark. You could clearly see him only using the power on the straights and playing very conservatively on the corners. Credit where credit is due your driving was great but your mate could do with a little more practise if he wants to get the full beans out of the M5. I can assure you there is so much more in an M5 than was demonstrated here.
05027802 2 years ago 4
I know the M5 has more. I just drove a new M5 with the 6-speed true manual at VIR a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the transmission (a manual!) overheats after a few laps and the computer nannies take the power away. So all I have to do to beat it is wait for the M5 trans to overheat. ;-D
wankelbolt 2 years ago
Yep that is actually very true. In fact the M5 trans doesn't actually overheat but the sensors cut the power to avoid damage very early.
It does depnd on the driving technique how quicky the power is limited but for track scenarios it's an inevitabilty. Big shame really as it is an awesome machine.
05027802 2 years ago
lol... ironic
iPidd 2 years ago
I like the rx8... nice but the m5 in a straight line is sweet... Most german cars are like this fast as hell on the straights, but slow in the corners...except m3 and 911 and thats about it... the 510 was dope though... I want one with an sr20... awesome. Good vid...

haha poor thing cant catch up to it. haha rx8 is hopefully gonna be my first car. let me know if its a bad idea.
sean4496 2 years ago
iif you understand what it is you will be buying then its the best idea... i cant imagine not owning an rx8 after owning it for almost year and half now.... it does require a little bit of mainting and care... however it is worth the money... the power is not as bad as people say... it weighs little so 180whp and 140lbs of torque... is not that bad... but i love it... honestly i feel safe driving that car ... cuz its so easy to handle no matter how hard you drive it...
tdyduch13 2 years ago
I completely agree. I got mine back in 2003 and I still love behind the wheel of that thing, it's such a good time. And I also feel really safe in it despite it being so small because it's so easy to get out of harm's way with the way it handles and the awesome brakes. People that bitch about horsepower and 1/4 mile times can kiss my Irish ass

good driving i want a rx8 soo bad! i'v see vids of them in the snow. how are they in it does anyone know?
lovettoride 2 years ago 2
They work just fine in the snow. The limited-slip diff and even weight distribution keeps the wheels planted. The trick is you must have all-season mud + snow tires, or dedicated snow tires like Blizzaks. I know many people bought a dedicated set of 17" rims and skinny snow tires for Winter. (Cheaper than buying a truck. ;)

hey wankelbolt, i am buying an RX-8 very soon, what year would you say is overall the best from 2000+?
thanks! :D
apoc253 2 years ago
You won't regret any RX-8.
Good Luck!
wankelbolt 2 years ago
you know what? thats actually funny cuz i was about to buy a 2004 : x
ive heard some bad things about 08 and 09 models though....but then again it was probably from people that dont know a damn thing! lol so 04 new engine? like a new 13-B?
again thanks so much =]
apoc253 2 years ago
2004 would be OK, even if the engine hasn't been replaced, if the price is right. All 2004-2008 have 8-year, 100,000 mile engine core warranty. The engine is a RENESIS, an improvement on the 13B.
2008 and 2009 are different cars. I'm not aware of problems with either. In fact, the 2009 engine and handling are better than all before it, and the 2008 is no slouch. 2009 has a face only a mother could love, but all that is forgotten at the first high-speed sweeper. ;-)
