IMO live TV shows are made for television audience and studio visitors and audience are just props for the show. They have to applause when display is blinking...

This video illustrates just how irritating Steadicam operators can be to a live audience. With the former hovering constantly in front of the talent, about the only thing the live studio audience ever sees is the Steadicam operator's butt.

Where are the zoom controls located? Or are they remotely controlled by the director?

they are on the yoke, controlled by the steadicam operator.. (on that set-up, he has to use his right thumb on the zoom-control)
