I currently teach high school in New York City and eventhough school rules say no cellphones are allowed, I'd say 90 percent of the students have them. This professor, in my opinion, thinks too much of himself or was just having a bad day. Just tell the guy to put it away and it would have been taken care of.

I don't think the first one was wrong at all... The kid was rude, yes you can answer your phone anywhere you want but take it outside. Don't just sit there and talk and laugh, especially in the middle of a lecture. I think the teacher handled it very well, he was pleasant, even had a smile on his face, but still got the "You're being an inconsiderate disruption to others, a-hole" message across.

Asking them to leave, failing them or detaining them from school is appropriate. To respond to arrogance or negligence of the rules with brute force or violation of personal property is animal like and deserves an animal like response, like his face being caved in by the front of somone's foot. He's the teacher, and what he just said was "You violated my rules so I violate you." Ok. An eye for an eye it is.

@bestamerica Even if the teacher's anger was justified, the main problem is that he looks like a total douche while breaking the phone. If he'd snapped it in two with his bare hands, or smashed it with a giant mallet Gallagher-style, we'd be behind him. Instead, he angrily tosses it at the floor, then does the thing where he casually pretends he didn't do it. When you're a geeky asshole who just chucked some kid's KRZR, you just look like a petulant child.

This is happening during his introduction to the course. I would bet he planted that guy or had an agreement with him to participate, just to make an example and scare the rest of the class into behaving. I'll also bet there weren't many cell phones going off in that class for the rest of the year. :D
