Slumdog is another word for underdog; except that it has been adapted to fit the movie. I think it's pretty clever if you ask me, and kind of describes the movie to people who haven't seen it yet. Jamal is an underdog who lives in the slums. I don't think they were trying to demean people who actually live in the slums.
