in the immediate aftermath of ike, the last thing on anyone's mind was politics (see "handouts" talking point). everyone was struggling *together*. it was that spirit i was celebrating in making this.
a year later, it was still "empty", because the people who could afford to, yeah, they started rebuilding. those who couldn't afford to didn't. you know, ~those~ people - our friends and neighbours.
@arin721 I said people were NOT waiting for handouts! They did what they had to to survive...I know I lived threw Ike, Rita and Katrinia...we has a community help one another
Nobody remembers us, but we were two guys on our motorcycles and sleeping bags, staying in LaMarque. They called us the "mohawk brothers" and we worked for free from before the sun was up until well after it was down helping folks rebuild around the island. My father was BOI and I've always loved it there. Thanks to The Poop Deck, The Spot and all the people of the island. We hope we helped.
@HollowBodyRebel that's so awesome! there was so much of that going on. people just lent a helping hand without having to be asked :) thanks to you and your brother and all the rest who helped!
I remember Ike so clearly. I had JUST moved to texas, and then it hit. Didn't have power for close to a month. School was out for weeks though...

Excellent Video! We in the middle of Houston sometimes forget about the hardest hit in Galveston but this tells it all pretty much!
