How sad everyone commenting about the dog not coming from a shelter. I betcha ya anything these same critics never contributed a single penny to any animal shelters, all i see here is hypocrisy at its finest. as for me i just wish the Obama the best wishes with their new dog.

brisson, your "betcha" is baloney, all of us in the animal protection movement are absolutely disgusted with Obama's thoughtless choice to go with a breeder dog instead of going to a shelter. He signed a death warrant for million of dogs with this one thoughtless act. And we do more than just give to shelters, we take dogs out daily to save them from certain death, you empathy-challenged pea brain.

I'm disappointed they didn't go with a shelter dog. Three of our four were directly from shelters, and our Peruvians are terrific... actually, all four of them are. ;)

We adopted from a shelter - it was a great decision and I would highly recommend it. Good job Obama - one good promise well kept.

ANY BREED CAN BE RESCUED! I really hope Obama gets to see WEMA and is inspired to rescue/adopt a dog for his girls. If he adopts it will be one giant step for companion animals in this country and if he buys it's 12 steps back and tragic for shelter dogs & cats.

Wema, like so many Americans today, is a victim of economic hardship. She is homeless. Please spread this far and wide so that the Obama family can see her. She's a Portuguese Water Dog and is a perfect spokesdog for homeless dogs in our shelter system.
