In Modern Warfare 2 it left you on a cliff hanger, so something else has to happen after that.

But, the next Call Of Duty, which is coming out in November, 2010, is goin to be Call Of Duty Vietnam.

So, I'm guessing sometimes in 2011 or early 2012 MW3 will be released.
