  • Gay or straight, this is an absolute classic.

  • Arquivo X.

  • One of the best songs ever.

One of the best extended versions ever.

One of the best messages ever.

One of the best times ever.

    I'm 41 and I miss the 80s. :(

  • @SvensonC Totally agree with you

    i miss the 80s too !!!!

  • @SvensonC Me too brother me too. My time machine is in the works.

  • beautiful. I used to listen to it in the am...still dark...waiting for my second bus...to fashion design school...just 16...living on my own:)

  • This meant so much to me when i was younger , Brings back so many great memories

  • are all members of this great band ... gay ?

  • @919rickw Does it matter? the performance is electrifying, probably due to the experiences of the artists, but all artists are sensitive to everything in life, no?

  • @919rickw WTF does it matter?

  • @HumaneTrainers it doesn't .... or at least it shouldn't ... I am a straight guy and think this music is brilliant.

  • Das sind die 80ger..Ich raste aus:-P

  • RIP Jonny Ray...you've been gone 20 years and everyday I miss you.....

  • this song is about my youth, unfortunately

  • Que buen tema ochentoso!

  • This is a boss tune end of! Fook all you homophobics! Im straight as they come and i love all ppl until you piss me of that is lol!!! 80's at its finest! I blast this often!

  • A true classic from the 80's with a message.

  • Forget all the gay comments etc. This is one awesome tune and Jimmy's voice is outstanding. Just appreciate it for what it is !!

  • @sadnav Right, just another stupid and nonsense comment! 80 music rules!

  • Hello Mitch22167. I had exactly the same experience when I was in my teens. It helped my to survive some hostile period. After not having heard this song for toooo many years, I heard a remix (I though by MOJO) during driving home from work, resulting in a very special feeling all over my body. I am glad that I am in a position now to have some positive influence on my environment.

  • @333Chrome

it`s strong timeless when i`am on it

  • You obviously dont have to be gay or identify with the lyrics in this song to be a fan. This guy has such a unique tone of voice and I love the beat and hook. Early 80's late 70's electronic some of my favorite music around. Artist were experimenting with radical new instruments while still keeping their musicianship intact. It's a far cry from today's producer-driven pop, that could only hope to hold as much character and integrity.

  • @agentwright007

    Classicaly put !!!!

  • Monster Tune!

    Love the extended version!!

  • I used to dance to this a lot in late 80s. Gay bands were cool then, like the Smiths. But most people who like these bands didn't care. I liked New Order too and Tears for Fears, never wondered about their sexual preferences. Not gay myself, loved that sound and still do.

  • what mix is this exactly?

  • @whitemachine It's known as the 12' Extended Mix. It can be found on their "Age of Consent" album.

  • It was not till recently that I understood this song about a youth being gay, I always thought it was about being a nerd, it's one of my favorite songs. I like that it has multiple meanings, that just makes it better.

  • This song is a beautiful painful cry of an individual like us.

  • Awesome music never mind about being gay, be who you want to be and sod everyone else

  • it never bothered me that these guys was gay or anybody who chose to be , these guys wrote n sang top tunes back in the day love to listen and dance to them bk in chester in the 80s

  • coollllll...

  • This song helped get me through my teens. Just knowing others were dealing with the same shit somehow made it a little easier to go on..I'm 40+ now and OUT & PROUD!! Whenever I hear this song I'm reminded of the two lives I had to live. It's sad to think that people are still going through the same shit almost 30 years later..

  • @Mitch22167 where comes the pround in of being gay?

  • @Mitch22167 Bless you mate !

  • @Mitch22167 Filthy faggot

  • Just marvelous.

  • Just amazing version.. the best i ever heard !!

  • Gerat.

    Zhuang is Thema

  • a great tune!! and as i´ve seen the video for the first time,i thought;it´s hard for gays or lesbians to live a lucky life!i´m straight, but i hope for all the gays&lesbians that they could live their life in peace and WITH more tolerance!!!and i´m in common with the people here.the 80´s were fantastic!!and there´s too much hate in this world-multiculture doesn´t work in reality!!people can´t live in peace&unity!BUT folks WE ALL sitting in the SAME boat!

  • Great tune, great voice

  • this still holds, after about 25 years.. and to jamesbx stay strong.

  • absolutely amazing jimmy . brilliant tune and lyrics

  • One of the best songs from the 80's. 3:49 to 4:02, I could loop that and listen to it for hours. Such an amazing synth bass, very punchy.

  • yah, i think the 12inches are great!

  • Maravilhoso

  • @rhymeandreasoning I guess I'm not alone after all..

  • This is an absolut epic!!

  • immer wieder gerne gehört - genial in der langen Version !

  • LE MONDE ENTIER AIME CE TUBE !...

  • wish i could make music

  • pop music with guts....yes

  • is it just me or does 3:09 remind you of a recent beat of 2006-07 cry for you by "september"? Anyone....

  • I LOVE the original, but this version is brilliant !! Thanks for posting, awesome !!!!

  • This song destroys me and dares me to pick up the pieces so it can so it again.

  • Dieser Song ist special für die 80ger. Ich hab ihn geliebt! So wahr...

  • this Misunderstood.song was Michael Jackson. I should have died 8 time , I do not like cats. How many lives does adog have, a mut, just a loving loyal, mut, driving a car down highway 64,

drugs are haunting, but reality is much more perplexing. You have to go through the seasons to comprehend the reasons. SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO GO TO SLEEP,,reasons, to

  • The intro to this song is haunting.

  • I first heard this song in '84), I was a very happy teenager with no worries at all, yet I was able to feel a connection because the lyrics ring true to the many that do not feel understood, liked, loved. All teens at one point or another feel that way and also many children and adults. I loved this song instantly: the lyrics, the voice, the instrumentation and its truth in the message. A song for all ages and all eras of humanity. Today it is considered a classic, to me it is AGELESS.

  • avampireconfesses . com ,.>:E'''

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwww gracias por ponerla ke chingona rola de verdad !

  • I can't stop playing this fooker...Love it!!!!!!1

  • Beleive it or not, but first time I have encountered this song it was on a tape recorder I bought a year ago and the tape which came with it. I sort of hesitated to erase the tape and delete this song. I began to like it and then I searched to find out what it is. I found this video and found out I was listening it in slower speed all the time! It was recorded slightly quicker than the standard 7 1/2 ips. Luckily the machine has pitch control, but I still cant get used to the original speed. :D

  • @BlackBunik Nice! I had some trouble adapting to different sound after tapes, better sound quality on CDs and better sound systems makes everything sound almost too clean. Tapes defined my youth, I loved that rough sound, powerful and noisy. Mix tapes that were taped over a bunch of times, that gave everything its own unique sound too. I understand now why a generation before me loved mono recordings, records, etc. Like me, it reminds them of their youth, when music seemed to carry more weight.

  • THE BEST MUSIC !!!!

  • one of best songs in the 80s such a strong and powerful singer and he still sings great and powerful and who give a fuck if he is gay he still one of the best male singer in the world.love everything about the 80s.

  • pejilek above is right. This has less to do with gay/straight than it does about the universal need for acceptance, by family first and society in general. It's painfully sad that families have rejected their children over something they have no choice over: the disharmony between their emotional and physical gender. Please love your children and put aside your prejudices.

  • They shocked the world...... thank you.

  • perfecto :)

  • this is epic!

  • Too late for me now.

  • I'm married now. Have a son. I made my choice. And now there's no out for me. No one would understand now. I'm older. Trapped. My time passed. I lost my way.

  • @valtierra2966 your message got to me in a big way..would love to hear from you..drop me a message sometime.. Kirk..Montreal, Canada

  • A few months ago, I was smoking outside the shop I work, in an area with a 50% Asian Islamic population. A car was parked outside the shop; the (Asian Islamic) father of a family waited in the car whilst his family shopped. He was sat in the driver's seat, BLASTING Bronski Beat out at full volume! Now THAT is a sign of the positives for multiculturalism!

  • @FieryBiscuits

Thank you for sharing this story. I like it!!

  • Naw, it's just another indicator for 80s music still being the best. ;o)

  • @FieryBiscuits multiculturism is a fanastic concept but will never work in practise absolute fact fact from a multiculturised englishman

  • @FieryBiscuits eheheh i bet it was one hell of a view =)

  • @FieryBiscuits--- awesome story

  • @FieryBiscuits quite naive approach. Gays are killed by your as called "Asian" Muslims.

    Wake up you idiot

  • No words can express how this song spoke to me as a yound gay boy living in a small farm town in Indiana. This song lets millions of young gay kids know that they were not alone in the world. Jimmy Sommerville; It Got Better! Thanks

  • for all lost boys, you know who you are!

  • great

  • You don't specifically have to interpret this song's theme as homophobia.

I interpret it as societal and familial rejection in general. In my case, being a muslim while being in love with a christian girl.

  • for coronation street fans dont u think the lead singer looks like gary windass

  • such a great song

  • Use to love buying these 12" remixes

  • Beautiful. Always loved his voice.

  • Great dance music with a story behind it! Love Love Love It!!!!!

  • Im sure Jimmy was brought up on the same council estate as me in cambuslang...same age but different school...he was always different...even in his early teens..preferred his own company !

  • the definitive version thanks for postin T-T

  • Reminds me of when I was 18 yrs old and I knew my family and friends would never understand or approve. Some family to this day is still uncomfortable with me being gay. This song tells my story. You get tired of lying. You get tired of running.

  • @jamesbx courage...

  • @jamesbx be whatever you want to be and fuck all who are ignorant.

  • @jamesbx So many of us felt and still feel the way you felt back then. Jimy's music gave me the strength to resist all the hate and ignorance we had - and still have - to face...

  • @jamesbx good for you man, cheers!

  • I am 60 and was raised on the Beatles,Dylan and the Stones ,it was a great time for music but this is a real gem and I never tire of listening to it.

  • I was a f@*ked up teen in the 80's, I remember this tune from back then...remember how I loved how sweet the tone but never understood what it meant, too young to know. Now I push 40yrs of age and hear it from the other side of my teenage childs bedroom door 25yrs later. Funny how I smile with tears in eyes as I hear the words and from a voice that mystified me so long ago....I cry in peace now....how perfectly beautiful.

  • GREAT song!

  • Superb Classic, have to be made of stone not to like this.

  • I remember this group, Jimmy Summerville, i think he died of aids early, shame if he did coz he can sing well enough. Doesn't matter if he was gat or straight he could sing high pitch and its rare for a guy.

  • @mickmick1972 nope he's alive

  • @mickmick1972 Wow, I was four and a half minutes into this song and I saw your comment saying this was a guy singing. I thought it was a woman.

  • @JPotential The first time I heard this, I thought it was a woman too. I couldn't believe it was a guy. He's such a great singer though.

  • @mickmick1972 Jimmy Somerville is alive and well at 50.

  • @mickmick1972 He's alive & well you dipstick.

  • back to the 80s,love it,proper electronic music

  • 10 people really need to re-evaluate there musical understanding.this songs still as current today as it was back then, wake up people

  • 10 people really need to re-evaluate there musical understanding.this songs stillas current today as it was back then, wake up people

  • Right there with you madridswim. Musical pop culture talent peaked in the late 80's. This was one of the best from the height of creativity.

  • I am so glad I grew up in the 80´s to enjoy the music.

  • ein muss für alle toleranten menschen und einer der besten songs der 80´er

  • Die geilste Longversion vom BESTEN Song den BronskiBeat je rausgebracht hat!!!

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • I remember driving down Pico Blvd in LA singing this song and my friend staring at me like I was nuts

  • un pezzo di repertorio indimenticabile...ineguagliabile...grazie anni 80'...x la musica k ci hai regalato...^_^

  • I'm a middle aged happily married female with 2 kids who grew up in the 80's and appreciated talent... this is talent.... you don't see it very often... if you don't appreciate the vocals of this song and the words you have issues... because this song is about issues (gay or not) and acceptance...

  • @pejilek nope they don't make em like this anymore

  • @pejilek You nailed it mate! There's not a single word in this song that ties it back to sexuality! ANYBODY who has been persecuted can identify with this song. It's not about being gay, it's about being a misfit.

  • @pejilek very powerful-its deep and it applies to all who are bullied or abused-love this song

  • @pejilek Best youtube comment I've read in a long time!

  • Doesn't this have to do with some gay guy getting pushed around and stuff or what?

  • i saw this on GRANADA REPORTS from MANCHESTER,the week they recorded it,a superb record, early 80 odd, went out and bought it at hmv, market street, the old one!!! ha!i knew this would be a hit!!......what they doin now?

  • After 5 years of listening to this song almost every day I still love, love, LOVE it!!

  • nothing to do with being gay mate, music is universal .. . .

  • @lagachette01 Your wrong on that one fella, it was a song about comming out as being gay. The original video shows it, bronski beat was a gay band, and back in 1984 at the height of the AIDS panic it was an anthem. That said it does relate well to acceptance of anyone different and is a classic tune.

  • @lagachette01 Wow you hit the marker!! People music is universal...!!

  • The one who invent this beat is so genius!

  • Gorgeous. Bought this album when I was 15.

27 years later it still blows me away.

  • Estares Restares Andares de Amares...

  • "the love that you need will never be found at home"...

  • @Steerpikey

    Indeed...

  • damn, the extended version is not enough.....could someone uplpoad an extended version of the already extended version plz?

  • eines der besten aller zeiten scheisse das man älter wird und diese geile zeit weg ist

  • whenever I hear jmmy's expression in this song - it reminds me of Summer's in Glasgow. Being a kid in school as the sunlight shines into a room and that feeling of joy that comes from being. That God loves you this moment in time and holds your heart within that warmth of sunlight. The smell of floor cleaner and being alive and outside that classroom and that life is a blessing. Love is a human right.

Life is hard - brutal. But those moments make it bearable.

  • "the plaintive cry of the heart that breaks. Spirits of a Scottish winter dream in time for those who are pushed outside. Warriors of the heart - true to love. Such loneliness only the broken heart could bear. Forgive them - forgive me. We never find love because we are so far away from everything - even ourselves."

  • I absolutely love this song. One of the best ever!

I remember listening to this as a kid when my sister made me a copy to play on my Walkman.I had no idea what the song was about, I just knew I loved it!

  • this was the first song I ever remember as a young gay man in the 80's

  • Celle que j'écoute le plus souvent =)

  • most important song in the 80s :)))

  • excellent track,. while im straight

  • Excellent Track

  • Yep I am gay . Couldn't be happier.

  • The best 12 Ex Version record ever !!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song is awesome

  • Wow i cry everytime i hear this song . growing up as a gay youth in a smalltown can be heartbreaking at time. THe boys used to beat me up i would go home bloodied and just put this song aon and cray. Thank you for uploading . life is much better now. I MOVED .

  • @brandoncipelle lol u gay

  • @billigerfusel Lol you get a candy for being so pereptive....! Jesus!!

  • @brandoncipelle I'm the same way. I always got picked on for being gay and this song really says how awful it feels.

  • @TheLoveOctopus Same, heard this on VH1 Classic in the 90's when I was a kid, let's just say, I found it interesting. lol

  • @Marillionmad I'm pretty sure VH-1 Classic didn't come around until the early 2000's :p

  • @Lmv2841 lol

It was a music channel anyways ! Might have been 99, 00 I dunno I forget in my old age !

  • Jeun Homme de la branche 90's Merci papa pour cette culture Musicale que tu m'a apporté <3 Cette musique est de mes préférées

  • LOVED!!!! the start. Very powerful. I would like to have it without the pictures, etc. Just BLACK and WORDS. Thank you for sharing your video.

  • Reminds me of being trashed at "Crackers" an after-hours under 21 little dance club behind WCPC Discotheque in San Diego CA. This is one of those songs that is just so sad-sounding to me.

  • Senza parole mitici!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When Jimmy wails on the word "cry" in the opening, the emotion in his voice is palpable. Not all music is this raw and real.

  • OHHH! How can one leave rude comments on this wonderful song???

  • There's always been pain. Let's hope we can stop it, once and for all.

  • So many memories hearing this song

    First time in 84
