@Elthehablo A great circle track - quickest route between two points on the earths surface - would have taken it right over the arctic, which is mostly frozen ocean :)
@brancodoes the cost was astronomical, the risk was high, and it was hard just to find airports that would allow them to land and take off, due to the extremely loud noise of the concord. The paris crash was pretty much the last straw they were looking for to ground her.we will miss it.
The special here is that this is a rare landing on Kai Tak RWY 31 because she turned to the right here. Regular is the approach on RWY 13 and then a turn to left.
I heard from the news that Air France is planning to spend a lot of money just to make this marvelous plane fly again... :)
Now there going under restoration works cuz they said it should be ready for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. i hope everything will work out just fine..:)
@han0115 Because it was NOT good at all. Neither technologically nor economically.
Supersonic travel brings a lot of engineering problems along. If the Concorde had been able to maintain Supercruise (check Wiki), it would have had a chance in my opinion.
@Bigalinjapan I don't quite understand what you mean...Concorde did maintain supersonic cruise without afterburners, it was the Russian counterpart (Tu-144) which could not unless it ran it's afterburners throughout the flight, in turn wasting fuel. Also, although Concorde was old analogue technology, it was the first to have fly-by-wire ;)
British Airways and Air France were the only airline company's to have the concorde..
On 10 April 2003, Air France and British Airways simultaneously announced that they would retire Concorde later that year. They cited low passenger numbers following the 25 July 2000 crash, the slump in air travel following the September 11 attacks and rising maintenance costs.
A lot of people get the wrong impress from this quote.
Passenger numbers dropped since the crash, but not because of. When it returned to service in Nov '01, tickets were sold in minutes - Concorde's reputation was most definitely strong.
I really dont understand why the concorde does not fly anymore. There are so much rich people. It doesnt matter if they have to pay 200 or 20000 per ticket. They want to be as fast as possible.
The reason they don't fly anymore is because they were an extremely expensive aircraft to operate for the airlines (BA & AF). Also due to noise restrictions within the US, they were not allowed to fly over land, and were thus limited to only coastal airports. This greatly reduced the number of routes they could fly and further reduced profits.
The wheel wass there to stop any damage occuring in case of an overrotation on either takeoff or landing. And Concorde was perfectly able to execute the runway 13 landing, perhaps it was the weather that was causing the runway 31 landing.
What a plane and in a perfect location. The 'Landor' scheme was BAs best, particularly on Concorde. Coincedentally, visited this very Concorde in New York in August.
Kai Tak closed in 1998. Concorde stopped flying in 2003. The landing we saw was a "reverse" approach (316 degrees instead of the usual 136 degrees) because Concorde didn't have the maneuverability at slow airspeeds to negotiate the sharp turn on the final approach onto runway 13.
How did the Concorde fly to Honk Kong? Because it's not allowed to go supersonic above land...

nyyankeefan2009 2 years ago
No, they could fly over land, but only subsonically.
They found ways around this however and in some cases, such as deserts - they could fly over them.
Over 60 US airports were Concorde charter destinations and anyone who would want to charter Concorde to fly at any of those airports could.
