@kaptenmange Reading some of the comments, there are a few points that need clarification. Firstly, women (in general) regardless of their religious or cultural background are prone to oppression. This is not exclusive to Islam . This is backed up by Women's aid in the UK where their research reveals that 'on average, 2 women a week are killed by a current or former male partner'. It is merely the ignorance of people that choose to mix Islam with their backward ideology.

Fourthly, under no circumstances can men rape women in Islam. It is not something that was practised by our Noble Prophet or by his companions. And I can challenge you to that.

And for your information, I believe that in Islam, women are actually given more rights than men. For example, it is obligatory on a man to strive and provide for his family financially whilst a woman can work outside the house and keep her own money. A woman in Islam is NOT obliged to spend not even £1 if she doesn't want to.

@talzeer Also, Lot offered his daughters (in marriage and their own consent) to men that were gay who were 'flirting' with the Angels who came in human form. He was trying to save them from wrath.

If you have any concerns then please firstly read the verses in the Quran and find out the context they were sent down in, as each verse has a story behind it. Enlighten yourself. If you have further queries then please ask.

Assalamu Alakium brother. I must agree that cultural confusion is the problem. Another problem is how people digest what they are reading and hearing from other muslims. I have heard over and over again that it is best for a woman to stay in the house, but not all women want to stay home all day. Most sisters who speak up for themselves are looked down upon, even though she may have a strong understanding of the qur'an and sunnah.Sometimes they want you to be seen and not heard.

this comment is a complete contradiction to your previous comment. A woman that is denied an education because an insecure man misunderstood the Qur'an...is oppressed. If you cant drive a car because a man, not Allah(swt), thinks you shouldnt...this is oppression!

Muslim women don't need sympathy for doing this great deed. They do this for the sake and approval of Allah and need no approval from society. Women make up about 46% of the worlds population. Can you imagine if only 54% of the world had the potential to be productive?
