Karpov does this periodically for some reason. I've noticed him sometimes taking many minutes on early moves vs. Kasparov. I believe he is a fairly fast player in these long games and is simply confident of his abilities.
Anand is a great chess champion. He lived in Manila with his parents and at a young age developed his acumen while hanging out in corner store chess games. His father was a railroad/railway consultant in Manila.
