Also-if Germany hadn't so horribly persecuted the Ukranians (who hated stalin's policies) the Ukranians would have probably gladly joined the Germans in their attack on Russia and this would have been enough to defeat Russia (without Japan).

Out of 20 students, NONE could correctly place the years it was fought. Most could not name a SINGLE national leader in WWII. Many thought we fought the war against Russia. Some thought it started "when England got bombed". This epic history is being forgotten by our young people. A real tragedy.
The war in Europe was won by Russia. The Soviets fought day and night to first bring the Wermacht to a standstill and then push all the way to Berlin. The Americans and the British gave them money and guns, then attacked Western Europe to ensure that it too would not fall to the rapidly advancing communists. Without D-Day the Iron Curtain might have stretched all the way to France and the Atlantic Ocean.
Pff, the U.S.S.R cooperated with Hitler at first, they only entered the war because he invaded. The Western Allies also fought the Germans in North Africa and Italy, and they were responsible for destroying most of the Luftwaffe and decimating German industry with bombing. I do not discredit Russia's huge role in the war, but you shouldn't be distorting history to make it seem like they won the war alone. It was an ALLIED effort that won the war.

I understand that Hitler was Obsessed with taking Stalingrad, but militariy the 6th Army, with their Romanian and Italian allies could have easily cut the Volga north of the city and laid siege to Stalingrad. Militarily the Germans could have succeeded and kept freedom of movement. Fighting "house to house" is seldom a wise thing to do. @patsyd80 Yes....a simultaneous attack from Germany (from the west) and Japan (from the east) would have most certainly defeated the USSR. Also-if Germany hadn't so horribly persecuted the Ukranians (who hated stalin's policies) the Ukranians would have probably gladly joined the Germans in their attack on Russia and this would have been enough to defeat Russia (without Japan).

I teach a senior-level American college class in Foreign Business Relations. Recently I brought up the subject of WWII, and was shocked by the ignorance of these young people about WWII. Out of 20 students, NONE could correctly place the years it was fought. Most could not name a SINGLE national leader in WWII. Many thought we fought the war against Russia. Some thought it started "when England got bombed". This epic history is being forgotten by our young people. A real tragedy.

The war in Europe was won by Russia. The Soviets fought day and night to first bring the Wermacht to a standstill and then push all the way to Berlin. The Americans and the British gave them money and guns, then attacked Western Europe to ensure that it too would not fall to the rapidly advancing communists. Without D-Day the Iron Curtain might have stretched all the way to France and the Atlantic Ocean.

Pff, the U.S.S.R cooperated with Hitler at first, they only entered the war because he invaded. The Western Allies also fought the Germans in North Africa and Italy, and they were responsible for destroying most of the Luftwaffe and decimating German industry with bombing. I do not discredit Russia's huge role in the war, but you shouldn't be distorting history to make it seem like they won the war alone. It was an ALLIED effort that won the war.

The Soviets had little desire for a Soviet Europe, probably because it would be TOO expansive. The "buffer zone" was thought well enough for Stalin.

If the landings had never happened or the Normandy invasion was beaten back, the Germans may have won the war in the east or at the least fought to a stalemate. 500k-1 mil axis troops were on the western front at any given time. Then another 200k in Italy. Believe me without the US and UK, Germany may very well have won the war.

@TheEnglishBadman in fact,i believe that the russians should have not been scared of the allies and should have attacked them,they have more weapons and troops than the allies,their sheer numbers could definitely overwhelm the allies,and the battle should take place at US homeland,so they would feel how it is to be attacked and lose millions of lives,specially of the innocent lives...

I understand that Hitler was Obsessed with taking Stalingrad, but militariy the 6th Army, with their Romanian and Italian allies could have easily cut the Volga north of the city and laid siege to Stalingrad. Militarily the Germans could have succeeded and kept freedom of movement. Fighting "house to house" is seldom a wise thing to do. Hitler's mania cost many fine men their lives and his loyal Generals sat by and watched. Cowards! Prussian Generals afraid of a pathetic Austrian Corporal..
