  • Fantastic set of videos...thanks for posting...In any of your tests did you time the drop between two known points? duck or woodpecker..I woudn't mind betting on accurate repeatability..(thinking of using this for something else!)

  • @NigelLoller

We didn't time the periods, but you can easily do this with the video, especially in the super-slow-motion segments that have time displayed.

  • Hi - need help please.

my college has a race for this next month and me and my department want to win it. we want to know what kind of mods we can do to this to make it go faster?

would longer stride make it fast enough?

i have added weights to the backside to make it kick forward faster and that's helped a bit.

  • @pofrani

I think there was a technical article in the "American Journal of Physics" or in "Physics Teacher;" although I don't have a link. If you can track down the article, the analysis might provide some guidance.

  • @DrDaveBilliards

Hi, thanks for that. was the article online then? i am thinking i shall add ball bearing as well to the back leg hinge to eliminate any friction.

  • @pofrani

FYI, I found the article and added a reference and link to the video description. Check it out.

  • @DrDaveBilliards

    THANK YOU!!!!!! :oD

  • @DrDaveBilliards

for info - thanks to your video and article, our 'duck' is currently seeded number 1 with the fastest speed! final race tomorrow tho so i will let you know!

  • @pofrani

    You're welcome .. and congrats!

Try to post a video (with reply to this video) so we can see your work.

  • PERPETUAL MOTION!!!

  • Me encantan los juguest de madera, muy bonito. En este blog tambíeb podemos encontrar juguetes de este estilo, la verdad está muy bien;

    Un saludo

  • Thanx for this video! How about this rampwalker? How does it work? I saw the toy on this youtube video :WALKING ROBOT-ROBOT ANDADOR ...

  • My two-year-old was mesmerized by this video. Of course, during the last slowmo, it was the frame info letters that mesmerized him - but hey...

It's pretty awesome to see physics discussed like this - people rarely stop to consider how interesting the motions of normal objects are.

  • @fdynamics

Thanks. You just made my day. It's not easy to impress a two-year old.

  • Interesting videos.........

  • for some reason i had a felling that something was gonna pop up and scream at the end of the video

  • I could have at least made the duck explode and have blood go everywhere in super-slow motion. Maybe next time. :)

  • @DrDaveBilliards lol that would be pretty kool

  • WOW were do you get them!!

  • I just added the URL to the video description.

  • where can i purchase one o these?

  • Sorry, but I don't know. I will try to find out from the person who owns them.

If anybody else knows, please share the info.

  • FYI, I just added the URL of where the toy was purchased to the video description.

  • oooops sori doc the straigh Roller Ramp like is here watch?v=StcY7bG1xzs

  • DrDaveBilliards It is possible for u to do a video on this duck running inside the same mass round hollow frictional spining turnell so that this duck can run without stoping ?

  • The duck is much happier going down a straight ramp. :)

  • Eeeeh DR i don't understand why what's make this duck so sure he is not so happy when running insite the big round "guided track" or frictionless turnell which either ve lighter or same mass with him ??kakakakaka :)))

  • A 3-D world is much too scary for a physics duck!

  • can someone tell me what does he say between 31~36 seconds? thank you

  • "The center of gravity of the duck body is almost directly above the pivot point for that back leg."

  • is saying that the centre of gravity is directly above the back leg, thus making the duck stable in a flat surface.

  • "here's a close-up in super slow motion" hahahaha.

My little nieces would go nuts if I gave this to them.

  • I would go nuts if somebody gave this to me......let's face it, everybody loves wooden ducks that walk...

  • The video wasn't meant to be a comedy, but I'm glad you like it.
