@Draven3000gt depends...i raced a VR-4 in my 96 Trans am auto i had. only mod i had was a K&N drop-in and he was the only car to ever get me off the line. my car had cooper cobra tires which launched very nicely...even beat a first gen STI off the line but the VR-4 had me by about 3 cars off the line but i caught him around 80 and i let off at 110 and had about 3 on him. dont know what year his was tho. AWD is great for launches but more stress on the motor compared to a RWD w/ slightly less HP
Setting the records straight: The 3000GT is a 2ng generation (94-96) no-turbo. Had 220hp 24v 3.0L V6 engine. Drivetrain is front wheel drive. It gets out of its own way but not 'fast' by any stretch of the imagination.
so i'm guessing this is a 97 3kgt. i'm assuming that due to the fact the 97's had 160hp stock. so 160hp vs 240hp 280ft lbs. My friend has a GTP, I beat him with my bone stock 1988 RX7. and I beat him with my bone stock 92 3KGT. I mean I could be wrong, he could just be a shitty driver.

@35RSkyline my guess it that the 3kgt is a 97 base model. 160hp. slowest year for the 3kgt's. a VR4 would have destroyed the gtp without any problem. 320hp on 3200lbs vs 240hp on too heavy. the 3kgt in this is a base model single cam

That was either a base model 3000, or the sl. If it was the VR-4, then you wouldnt see the front tires peel out and smoke, it would of launched and left that Prix, the only way the Prix would be able to catch it stock for stock is if the 3000 ran outta fuel...lol
@wlmrt6 In regards to your vr4's r only supposed to run 14.2 with a good driver post. Good drivers will run high 13's 1st gen and mid 13's 2nd gen. I ran a 13.4 with just an intake & 13.1 with just intake & downpipe. If you run a 14.2 in a VR4, then it's not being launched correctly. And yes that includes all the magazine times in the early 90's when there was really no other high performance awd cars available. Even today there are pro drivers that don't know how to drive awd cars properly.

Well its true. Most autos are stuck in the 16s. If one ran a 17 must of been running bad or was a sohc auto. I know one guy if you search his name on youtube stealthee3k he ran 16.02 stock in his 5 speed sohc and dohcs have an extra 30 horsepower or so which is why they run 15s. He also ran 15.78 just by removing the cat.

In regards to the guy i know that ran 17s, it was an SOHC car but is in fact a manual (this verifyed by the fact he killed it the first time he staged it lol). I heard he did have the heads ported and is in the 16s now
The autos do make less power and on top of that the tall gears and not much power hurts. The DOHC n/a auto shifts at 7000+ rpms so it reaches 60 mph in first gear the sohc redlines at 6200 so thats when the auto sohc shifts at around 45 ish. The standards have shorter gears so they have to shift to second around 30-35ish.
@GMdrivingMOPARguy was that the only 3000gt sl you've seen race then, stock automatics run 16.4's it depends on the year as well. the newer ones got slower

What was the elevation, temp, and was it on street tires. The fastest stock 3/S TT was 13 flat. A well driven TT 3/S will run mid 13's. A well driven GTP will run low 15's. That's a far cry from being in the same league. Once your modified it's anybodies race & comparison becomes skewed with morons.

to vic3000gt. I'll have to disagree with the fact that the 3000gt is more durable than the L32/L67. It's not to often that you find a high mileage 3000gt, stealth with high miles and no problems unlike the 3800's you can purchase with 160,000+ miles on them and have alot of internal life left.

Yeah I can tell even from exterior of the car that's Not a VR4 edition. Since 3000gt was running gas pump GTP won. Both cars are good, but I would stick to 3000gt they are much durable then GTP.

@vic3000gt 3000gts are shit compared to a GTP... How are they more durable? GTP has heavy duty internals that could hold up alot more power then that of a 3000GT, and it has wayyy more potential without spending so much to make it faster.
@96stealth, there are plenty of parts and mods available for GTP that its so easy and cheap to make this car fast. Its cheaper to build, and more durable then a 3000GT. 3000GTs are known to "spun" a bearing. I got a 98 GTP, spend about 1900 in parts, did the labor myself, and did a best of 12.98 seconds on the 1/4 mile ( 93 octane, low profile tires ), at englishtown, NJ. And yes, stock GTP can hold 500 hp on stock internals, its been done using a turbocharger, and a strong head.
@Pracerdohczx2 I agree that GTP's can be made fast, but comparing the two cars is a joke. 99% of spun bearings are do to dented oil pans, not because there just unreliable. If you take care of the car it's just as reliable as any other car. I've had mine now for about 4 years running high 11's low 12's with really a mild set-up. 1 wheel bearing is the only thing I've replaced. I've done over 50+ 6k launches with no tranny issues. 3/S's also brake, handle and look better. They're worlds apart.
Had a 98 Firebird with the 3.8L and I had a 95 3kgt sl and now I have a vr4. The GTP wouldn't stand a chance against the SL without the supercharger and it just wouldn't stand a chance against the vr4.

@wlmrt6 In regards to your vr4's r only supposed to run 14.2 with a good driver post. Good drivers will run high 13's 1st gen and mid 13's 2nd gen. I ran a 13.4 with just an intake & 13.1 with just intake & downpipe. If you run a 14.2 in a VR4, then it's not being launched correctly. And yes that includes all the magazine times in the early 90's when there was really no other high performance awd cars available. Even today there are pro drivers that don't know how to drive awd cars properly.

Well its true. Most autos are stuck in the 16s. If one ran a 17 must of been running bad or was a sohc auto. I know one guy if you search his name on youtube stealthee3k he ran 16.02 stock in his 5 speed sohc and dohcs have an extra 30 horsepower or so which is why they run 15s. He also ran 15.78 just by removing the cat.

The autos do make less power and on top of that the tall gears and not much power hurts. The DOHC n/a auto shifts at 7000+ rpms so it reaches 60 mph in first gear the sohc redlines at 6200 so thats when the auto sohc shifts at around 45 ish. The standards have shorter gears so they have to shift to second around 30-35ish.

If everyone is going to throw around ridiculous times then I will join in the fun. Someone said a stock GTP runs mid 14's. Just because one car does, doesn't mean all of them will. What was the elevation, temp, and was it on street tires. The fastest stock 3/S TT was 13 flat. A well driven TT 3/S will run mid 13's. A well driven GTP will run low 15's. That's a far cry from being in the same league. Once your modified it's anybodies race & comparison becomes skewed with morons.

LOL @ the 3000gt needing 2 intercoolers for 12 psi. The 3800 engine is way out of your league dude.

@96stealth 3000 GT's are complete JUNK, or stealth's, They break ALL the fucking time. The 3800 S/C engine will go 200k plus. show me a stealth with 200k LOL yea fuckin right, they require sooo much maintenance it ain't even funny, if you own one you should know this. They aren't fast, they're heavy, ugly, hard to work on, break down constantly, expensive to work on, FUCKING JUNK... like i said my grocery getter daily driver buick will smoke your piece of shit any day, and still get 28mpg

@treyofour You need to come back into the real world. 3/S's are just as reliable as any other car if properly maintained. How is something that is expensive to fix junk? How is your 12 sec Buick going to beat my 11 sec Stealth? My Stealth has also gotten 30mpg hwy and I to can get groceries. If your not a GTP fanboy then you're a GM fanboy. to vic3000gt. I'll have to disagree with the fact that the 3000gt is more durable than the L32/L67. It's not to often that you find a high mileage 3000gt, stealth with high miles and no problems unlike the 3800's you can purchase with 160,000+ miles on them and have alot of internal life left.

Yeah I can tell even from exterior of the car that's Not a VR4 edition. Since 3000gt was running gas pump GTP won. Both cars are good, but I would stick to 3000gt they are much durable then GTP.
I would like to see remach with a 3000gt on race gas!

@vic3000gt 3000gts are shit compared to a GTP... How are they more durable? GTP has heavy duty internals that could hold up alot more power then that of a 3000GT, and it has wayyy more potential without spending so much to make it faster.

@96stealth, there are plenty of parts and mods available for GTP that its so easy and cheap to make this car fast. Its cheaper to build, and more durable then a 3000GT. 3000GTs are known to "spun" a bearing. I got a 98 GTP, spend about 1900 in parts, did the labor myself, and did a best of 12.98 seconds on the 1/4 mile ( 93 octane, low profile tires ), at englishtown, NJ. And yes, stock GTP can hold 500 hp on stock internals, its been done using a turbocharger, and a strong head.

@Pracerdohczx2 I agree that GTP's can be made fast, but comparing the two cars is a joke. 99% of spun bearings are do to dented oil pans, not because there just unreliable. If you take care of the car it's just as reliable as any other car. I've had mine now for about 4 years running high 11's low 12's with really a mild set-up. 1 wheel bearing is the only thing I've replaced. I've done over 50+ 6k launches with no tranny issues. 3/S's also brake, handle and look better. They're worlds apart.

Had a 98 Firebird with the 3.8L and I had a 95 3kgt sl and now I have a vr4. The GTP wouldn't stand a chance against the SL without the supercharger and it just wouldn't stand a chance against the vr4.
