You're mistaking. Originally, Ian Flemings Bond was more darker & tougher than the ones in the films. In the books, he is actually a man you would hate (if you've read the books than you know what I'm talking about) + he's less suave & drinks hard. None of this 'shaken, not stirred' bs we see in the films-that was all thanks to Albert Broccoli, producer of the first what 17? films. He rarely smiles & he's not a comical character at all- unlike all the Bond flicks from the 60's & so on.

Craig is a truer portrayal of James Bond, w/o all the cheesy gadgets & bad dialogue. If you've read an Ian Fleming novel, you would know this. Think of Craig's looks as parallel to that of Fleming's idea of Bond: a man toughened by torture, pain & countless amounts of beatings & knife wounds.
