@mymyharlow id take on any man just to say i tryed im big on boxing and bjj seems to be the best in a real fight as well as mma i like karate but there no punching to the face is a rule that takes it out of a true contest
@tony5tark5 did you watch the first UFC before they had gloves some of the fighters broke their hands hitting the head. boxing when it was bear knuckle they hardly ever hit the head for the same reason they didn't want to damage there hands.
Other side: people who have to fortifiy their body, get insane stamina, and whose restrictions are no elbow or punch to the head or attacks to the groin...
Even in shotokan, you have surely been hit at the stomach without controle, have you been knocked out by it? surely not, yet your op got the point.
I have been knocked out several times by a punch in stomach. When I was a boy of 15, that was the main cause of my parents didn't allow me to go on with Kenpo.
All the reasons you explain here don't keep coherence if you have understood my comments.
Anyway, we can have different points of view. It's not a problem at all - OSS!!
I have practised Kenpo, Shotokan and Full Contact too. The way of standing and punching the chest is a completely lack of realism. Karate is Bu ( Stop battle) Do (way), not an exhibition of stamina or strenght (Sport). When you can recieve eye stab or a kick to your groins, to fight like this video has no meaning. My words are not a matter of recognizing styles, are a matter of functionalism.
firstly i want to apologize for stating you don't recognize kyokushin.
Small correction: Bu means war, not stopping a battle, so budo are the way of war
What you say is true, but it's not only the case for kyokushin. Shotokan competition: no lowkicks, no groin kicks, no open hand thrust, no elbows, no knees,...
Full contact: no attacks below belt, thick gloves, no elbows, or headbutts, etc..
I think you get what i mean
If you take it that way kudo is the most realistic competition you can get
Look for the twenty main precepts of Karate-Do. Bu is a kanji composed by two kanjis: one of them is "spear" or "halberd", the other one is the verb "stop". "War" is the western -and wrong- translation.
Sure competition is not realistic, but in shotokan for example is needed to attack and get back - otherwise you can take a mortal blow.
This Kyokushin match doesn't show a realistic behaviour. Karate must to be "Budo", not sport.
Please don't tell me you consider shotokan competition dancing as more budo than kyokushin? The behaviour of the fighters, the non contact rules, the restrictions on techniques...
SO one side: dancers who don't know contact, can't use an arsenal of techs properly (maite, gyku tsuki, mawashi, uramawashi, and 3 throws in average) and just focus on being trickier or faster than their oponent...
hey 武(bu) doesn't mean "stop" at all. Only one of the components means "stop"..Even though the combination of the two components means "stop battle", the meaning itself totally changes.. It has approximately 14 meanings, but there's no meaning of "to stop a battle". it mainly means "strength".
Nice Video I didnt know the guy but it´s very noble to show his ko´s and the fight´s he lost too.
I Prectice Shotokan ´from Sensei KASE and I think tecnique it´s important to learn but after you should find your own way no one but you know if you are hitting hard.... and it´s in your own hands to inproove your power.
i gained a black belt in shotokan 2nd dan and i am currently black belt 1st shodan in kyokushin---2 very different styles but good in both ways .....karate is karate for me
Why is everyone arguing on which art has better technique? Fighting arts are like religions, its up to the individual to meet their potential based off of what they have. And just like religion no matter what style you following there's always going to be someone else telling you that you're going to hell.
I agree. Only those who are True to their art actually become great. No ONE art is better than the other. The better fighter is the ONE who was prepared.
I practice Shotokan, and let me tell you, it depends on the instructor. Let's get something straight here though, that depends on if you're training in JKA or SKA shotokan.
soka... Well I practiced shotokan, then Kyokushin. SO the shotokan they taught me was that way, if U say there is other currents inside the same discipline I belibe U. In kyokushin itself there are a lot of Kyus know...since sosai oyama past away.
Oyama was a great man and did alot for Karate. I myself, am a korean practicing a japanese style just like him. I find his story very inspiring so i give you kudos for training in Kyokushin.
thats bullshit 8-) all karate styles focus on getting maximum power in all techniques - kyokushin just looks different to shotokan because of the difference in their competitions. if you look at mas oyama's karate its just good shotokan with goju influences. Todays kyokushin look nothin like him.
Shotokan focuses on the katas and technique on traditional ways
Kyokushin focuses the techniques on the body movement needed to give maximum power to every single blow
If U notice, when a shotokan karateka makes a seiken tsuki (direct hit whith the fist) he does not move a mm. of the shoulders, hips or feets. Now a Kyokushin karateka intigrates all muscle chains from the back, shoulders, hips, and legs in one single move, the same principle applys to every other technique.
I know what you mean. It takes some practice and control not to strike the face when your subconscious mind sees the opening. But just because they don't strike to the head doesn't mean they can't adjust when need be. My training partners and I adjusted easily. But, point taken.

haha u guys are dumb that say thats a gay art people like andy hugs, fransisco filho use that in K-1 and owned ernesto hoost and its KyoKushin by the way and Mas Oyama is the founder of Kyo Kushin
Dougieboy88, The reasoning behind standing so close is because much of the defensive measures against stronger/taller people is to jam their technique. In the last bit you'll see how he will grab the Gi and use that to re-enforce his blocks and tie him up a little.
let's not get into a debate about which martial art is better. Mind you, there are many karate dojo's still dedicated in the tradition and foundation of karate.
My own dojo is a non-competetive school that is interested in the research of history and maintaing of tradition of karate (Kakurin-Kan or Goju-Kensha).
However, on a lighter note, if we were to get into a argument regarding commercialisation. Take a look at taekwondo and its international standards in each club dedicated to competitions. (Not saying taekwondo is not a great martial art)
impressive. But he lacks in bodyweight. No match for even light heavy weights like Melvin Manhoef or heavyweights like all the other Dutch K1 masters.
more TKD ppl be like him? maybe if more kyokushin push themselves they can be as good as him,, he might be short but he truly is teh little giant,, anyways to those who asked what style he takes is Kyokushin karate,, and Ashihara is a offshot of kyokushin i believe,, anyways an awesome fighter,, one of the best along wit filho ,kazumi , hug etc etc the list goes on,,

About kyokushin, I have been practicing many styles of martial arts for over 15 years,

first you mention 3:22, now 3:49
in both cases it's narushima using body hooks. my previous comment is still valid, you don't seem to know what kyokushin karate is.
For my credentials: i'm practicing shotokan karate, kyokushin karate, full contact (kickboxing w/o lowkicks) used to practice savate.
So i think i might recognize a boxer from a kyokushin practitioneer.

heart hanging with an elite striker like Filho
despite the tremendous size and weight disadvantage.

western boxing is the best stand-up striking combination. Top it off with a little Jeet Kun Do
speed/reflex conditioning for optimum striking prep
at the pro-fighting level.
