@gdrum121 first of all, that comment is lame... second of all, you should understand that some people don't dig this kind of super slimey cheesy fusion sounds...
Which CD is this song on? I gotta have it! I'm a bass player and this just music just tells me i still have a ways to go to be where I wanna be. LOL Never mind, :)
the large majority of us have two arms, two legs, and 10 fingers... seeing someone with this level of skill on bass and drums doesn't make me feel inferior, it reminds me i have SO MUCH more potential in me just lying around, waiting to be used.
I've been lucky enough to see Dave play live on 7 occasions. Several times got to shake his hand and even chat for a bit. You would never know he's a drumming legend!
I've played drums since elementary school and now I'm in my 40's.
Dave is an astonishing player, no doubt.
But that doesn't seem to stop him from creating some of the most terrible music ever.
This track sounds like it should play in a doctor's waiting room.
I think what makes people listen is that they're fans of the drum performance on this track. Take the great drumming away and they might not care for the track.
@larkydozer What Doctor has this kind of Music playing in his office? Because I live In LA and have NEVER listened to anything near to what's being layed down here at any Doctors Office and if you can tell me what Doctor has this I'll be sure to go there. I take issue with you saying take away the Drums and folks might not care for this song... well take away the Horns from Tower Of Power and folks might not like the songs either... This may not be the Very Best but it's a far cry from Bad.
@larkydozer If a doctor's waiting room plays this song he will be sending a lot of old folks with heart problems to the emergency ward. No doctor will play such music in the waiting room, goodness me... Maybe other than me if I miraculously became one. You think that this song's all about drums because you've been listening only to the drums. Listen to the song as a whole and you'll find there are GREAT MUSOS in there, no just Weckl. I'm not a Weckl worshipper but I abso(F)lutely love this song.
This is the worst kind of forgettable, pedestrian, elevator music that's found all over the "Muzak" brand recordings to be found for sale to retail outlets. This, Spyro Gyra and Erik Marienthal, etc., etc..... All terrible, terrible music to tap a morphine drip to.
@larkydozer Can you play that tight and demonstrate so much reharmonization throughout??? Did'nt think so cock sucker!!!! Shut the fuck up you know nothing about music. Some of the best musicians in the world are playing on this track you dick. Go back to school moron xxxx
@larkydozer Forgettable? Beatles songs are pretty forgettable in our generation.
Pedestrian? Elevator? You're pretty on the spot actually. But do realize that these songs require far more talented musos working together than say, Lady Gaga's songs. That's why Gaga earns more money than Weckl does. Maybe if Robert Pattinson releases an album he'll probably earn more bucks than Weckl does.
This is fusion music, don't diss what you don't know how to enjoy. Reminds me of the days I dissed metal...
@duplacite Forgot to clarify, Gaga songs are junk to something like this. The only reason her songs make more money is because they appeal to a larger audience.
Tommy Lee from Motley Crue sometimes plays his concerts in a drunken state. Who's tappin' morphine drips now?
Michael Buble is an awesome pop artist who sings some jazz songs. But when you compare his songs to real jazz, it's in reality just pop jazz. Not hating artists, I quite like Buble actually. Gaga = ewww though.
A lot of people obviously don't know Dave actually learned to play bass by the magnificent Anthony Jackson. It's because of him he also got in contact with the man behind Simon & Garfunkel. Dave is a real perfectionist so I recon he also regards perfection to his playing on a bass. I see alot of useless comments of his playing other instruments, just sheer ignorance! & dumbness. You most of you people also do'nt know for example Michael Brecker ( the late) was a very well drummer indeed !!
@fransiboy I read in dave's book that anthony jackson recommended him so I'm with you on that. However, anthony jackson doesn't slap, so i'm assuming anthony jackson taught him the bassics (no pun intended...or maybe) lol. You don't hang around patitucci for that long and not pick up a thing or two :0)
on the Vinnie/Dave debate, when cats get 2 the level of play that they're both at & have been at, it's apples & oranges, no way 2 compare, it senseless, BUT, as far recordings go, Vinnie is,well, just wikipedia him, then Dave, & you'll see!! But at the same time, Vinnie has spent alot of his career freelancing, as where Dave spent alot of his career w/ Chick Corea, & 4 the last what, 7-8 years + w/ his own band, on top of producing & engineering alot of projects.... apples & oranges = )
I hate to say it, but if you think for one minute PApa dave can hold a candle to Colaiuta, you have to recheck. I'm just saying. Dave if BAD, but Vinnie? Man...whew!!! Phat. Check out Karizma and some of their tracks...
@dkofva Vinnie is a freak of nature and quite possibly the most successful drummer in history. No one in the same league as Vinnie. All styles, hundreds in not thousands of record credits, vast experience with so many heavy weights. I've heard he is a multimillionaire. Love Dave but .....
@webstercat I've had the pleasure of working with both. Both of them are unbelievable. No need to compare the 2. They both speak with their own voices. Both of them are amazingly blessed individuals.
I would say that is keyboard bass in the begining, then it sounds real in the end....and this sounds like the music when you reach the end level of a really bad Nintendo Game...no thanks
General Rule of Thumb:
If a song is named after an Instrument, there wasn't much inspiration to write it...just sayin'
if he is tappin the bass it makes no sense. thats just plain out wrong. but then again if he is, it does make perfect sense.lol the bass is one of the most percussive instruments there is.
Hmm. I guess based on this song alone, if need be. There are others, like "Rainy Day", but I don't recall all the names. But this groove is enough for me:)
Dave is credited with the bass on this track on the album (the only one, I think). Can the dude really be this smokin' on drums, and then slap the bass like that too?!?!?! Anyone seen him play? (bass, I mean). If he CAN play like that, I think I'm gonna cry.
Yeah, I definitely hear the synth bass for most of the tune (I would guess it was sequenced rather than played on keyboard)... but there's a killer slap bass solo 2/3 of the way through or so, and I think it's the real deal. Do you know of other examples of Weckl on bass? I'd like to check it out.
i've looked for other examples but really I didn't find anythng. Just a curiosity. When I was at dinner with Thomas Lang last year (I kow him personally) he told me that he practices more bass than drums nowadays!!!
@zendrumdude that's a keyboard bass - it was sequenced and quantized - it's obvious - It's 2 sounds, first one is a sort of synth bass similar to the synth bass in many Michael Jackson songs. It does sound like a real slap bass over top, in fact I'm almost certain it's real slap bass unless it's a multi-layered velocity sensitive sample which is possible. If I had to guess, I'd say it wasn't Dave on keyboard bass it was Jay Oliver... he sequenced everything else why not the bass on this track.
@hershism Yeah, I agree... synth bass throughout, actual bass during the slap stuff (mainly the solo in the middle). But the point is, in the CD liner notes, Weckl is credited with playing bass on this track... that's really impressive in my book!
@zendrumdude This is predominantly synth bass (played on a keyboard), so I don't think he played it. I can see him playing the slap bass, because it has that same "technical precision" to it that he has in his drumming. This sounds like a demo for Yamaha electric drums :-)
Mozart was arrogant, who doesn't know Mozart today?
Anyway, that guy is so communicative, showing technique, explaining so much things to us on old 1989 tape (The Next Step) and 2000 DVD.
Hey, don't get me wrong, that drummer is really a nice guy and never take drugs or alcohol. He's the only one showing CORRECTLY how to tune drums, how to practice, talking about microphones, frequency and so on.
You will never see Dave Weckl doing '' show off '' stuff like Thomas Lang, it's all about music.
I have noticed that those who are jealous of Dave feel this way, but those who look to him as an inspiration and a source of knowledge see him as humble and kind. After all, look at how much trouble he goes through just to share what he has learned. It would be different if he kept it to himself.
@5CheeseLasagna Agreed... he has put out some GREAT educational material: books, playalong CDs, DVDs. The guy really works to "spread the love". Unfortunately I have all his stuff and still can't play like him. Go figure... ! ; )
@zendrumdude Lol thats because you can only ply like yourself. Your style will never be like Daves you just have to embrace your own and improve as muh as possible =D
@5CheeseLasagna Yeah, you see a lot of guys trying to paint him out as a prick. I mean, I don't know the guy from Adam, so who knows, right? All I know is that, when he came to Portland in '98, he stayed after the show signing a grip of autographs. And ya gotta believ he was pretty tired. So he gets up to leave the stage, and he's almost all the way gone, when this guy goes, "Hey Dave, this guy over here didn't get your autograph." Dave walked over to the guy and signed his CD. That guy was me.
@5CheeseLasagna -- I see your extremely intelligent . So many drummers in groups & forums believe the rumors & bullshit that Dave is a prick .I think he's a gift and a hell of a nice guy .So all the haters can go f--k themselves .He is the best drummer alive today . Well him Vinnie & Gadd . & a positive mention goes to Gavin Harrison also ;_} !.
@5CheeseLasagna ..I agree. I had the pleasure (and benefit) of attending one of his master classes and you can't meet a nicer guy who truly wants to share his craft with other drummers. he worked personally with each of us in the class and what I took away from that experience has put money in my pocket. BTW El Negro is equally nice and helpful.
This song was recorded in 1990, if I remember correctly, so ther would be no way to emulate the bass solo at 2:57 with a keyboard. No way! I think it's Weckl playing, and it's a niiice solo indeed! The "bass playing" on the rest of the song is programmed and unremarkable
seriously Weckl's playing the bass? It sounds like a keyboard part to me but damn if that's true that's insane. Who's on keys? Jay Oliver maybe...sweet ass
im playing this song with my band....my drummer is amazing...but of course hes no weckl lol...but he is fuckin amazing....dave weckl is just to perfect and man can he hold down a groove..thats one thing most drummers cant do
I haven't heard this in ages. It's 'Heads up' off of his album of the same name. If I remember correctly, Weckl is also playing the bass guitar on this. So much talent in one bloke, very cool.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lollll. great musicians i'm sure. lotta smooth fusion is sorta goofy though. makes me feel like ther should be some naked women or something... i hate the synth horn section sound ugh...

BTW El Negro is equally nice and helpful.

weirdalwannabe23 3 years ago
This song was recorded in 1990, if I remember correctly, so ther would be no way to emulate the bass solo at 2:57 with a keyboard. No way! I think it's Weckl playing, and it's a niiice solo indeed! The "bass playing" on the rest of the song is programmed and unremarkable
BillBrolse 3 years ago
why couldnt it be dave kennedy on bass?
the bass btw you can hear the slap way b4 the solo
one things for sure its definately not a keyboard as a bassist myself i would know
Toshfunk 3 years ago
seriously Weckl's playing the bass? It sounds like a keyboard part to me but damn if that's true that's insane. Who's on keys? Jay Oliver maybe...sweet ass

they're referring to the bass solo later on in the song. Dave plays the pop an slap section himself, dude.

I haven't heard this in ages. It's 'Heads up' off of his album of the same name. If I remember correctly, Weckl is also playing the bass guitar on this. So much talent in one bloke, very cool.
