There are several kickers in the league today who could break the record. Janikowski, Prater (especially playing in Denver), and Carpenter in Miami all have 65-yard range. Dempsey did it first though, and it took the league a long time to catch up.
Maybe , possibly. But Dempsey had one hell of a strong leg himself. You constantly hear about players making 70 or 75 yarders in practice ( just like QB's who can throw it 100 yards lol ). There have been some long kicks since then, but he difference is they are more to accomdate the kicker........say just before the half.( or at Mile High Stadium). Dempseys' kick was epic, until someone puts it over from 64 yards for a game winner he is still the man.
Part of Lions lore, or gore if you will. 1970 was a pretty good season for them and they actually went to the playoffs only to be beat by Dallas 5-0. The amazing thing about this is that unlike Elam or Janikowski, who kicked their field goals in Denver's thin air, Dempsey did this in New Orleans, which is below sea level.
The thing is, if Janikowski ever breaks the record, and I think that one day he will, it won't be nearly as impressive or shocking as Dempsey's kick. I think Dempsey's kick broke the previous record by 5 yards. No one thought he or any kicker back in that era could come close.
IMHO, this is still the greatest kick ever. This was a game winner; Elam's and Janikowski's were not. Dempsey was a straight on kicker, which was the norm for 1970, while the other two were soccer-style. Plus the atmospheres where the kicks were performed couldn't be more different: humid, below sea level New Orleans for Dempsey's kick as opposed to the thin, mile-high air of Denver. Plus, Dempsey has a club foot and no right hand. The other kicks were impressive; Dempsey's was miraculous.
So I'm watching the Lions game yesterday and having flashbacks of this when Janikowski is lining up for his 65 yard attempt. Kinda shocked sports news stations didn't use this footage for the lead in for their reporting on yesterdays game.
So I'm watching the Lions game yesterday and having flashbacks of this when Janikowski is lining up for his 65 yard attempt. Kinda shocked ESPN didn't use this footage for the lead in for their reporting on yesterdays game.
@scatman44 If you listen to the full audio, there was some doubt whether he was in bounds. Great catch for sure, but it does look like he only got 1 foot in. I was a huge LIons' fan then, 9 years old, and was devastated when this happened. But watching it again, it's a great sports moment. Criqui's call is fantastic. Imagine it being Joe Buck.....
Watched this live. The great thing about this CBS tape is that you can actually hear the loud ""BOOM!!"" as Dempsey's foot laces into that ball. It's so cool that gsoli76 was able to locate this because I thought the original broadcast was lost.
@mgjohnson10 Actually, the broadcast was lost, as were almost all other games.
Except for ABC, the networks would reuse the 16mm reels routinely. This was a truck
feed, with this highlight sent to affiliates nationwide, and someone saved it. If you listen real closely with .08 left, it blips when Criqui mentions the NO timeouts. CBS has run
the original clip (w/o) blips 2 or 3 times over the years.
I watched this game live in November, 1970, and I always remembered the call by Don Criqui, because there was a slight chuckle in his initial response to Dempsey's attempt. When the ball was halfway to the goalposts, he said, "I don't believe it," and it just made over the uprights. That's the moment I remember, and it's one of the greatest broadcasts in NFL history...
I'm not much of a football person, but this gives me chills every time. Who's record breaking/tying kick was more impressive? Who cares. But someone that managed to make it into the NFL with no right hand and only half of a right foot... now THAT'S impressive.
@gerry3x Tom Dempsey's is more impressive? He didn't kick it with a real foot. If you notice his right foot was missing and he had a flat end to his right shoe. That has since been disallowed by the NFL.
@DaKoraqi It's the same distance. The only difference is where the ball is spotted for the FG. Today, a 63-yarder is spotted at your own 47 yard line, so that 10 yards (endzone) + 50 + 3 = 63. In this video, the goal post is at the goal line, so it doesn't have to pass through the endzone, but the ball was spotted at the 37 yard line. So the goal posts might be 10 yards closer, but he kicked it 10 yards farther back on the field.
You know this was a long time ago when a white guy returns the kick off. Is that Billy Kilmer playing QB for the Saints? The Lions would make the playoffs that year and within a few weeks of this game would lose to Dallas 5-0 in the lowest scoring NFL playoff game ever. Think of it, with the big wind up kickers take now they haven't beat this record. Dempsey took one step and kicked it through.
...and I wanted to add (ran out of room) that if Janikowski kicks a 67 yard fiel goal (and I believe he has the leg for it), it would not/could not diminish an athletic record which has remained for 41+ years...
1. Dempsey's kick dramatically won the game and broke the then record by seven (7) yards...yes..SEVEN.
2. Elam and Janikowski tied Dempsey's record, before halftime, and both AT ALTITUDE in Denver. Dempesey's kick was made in the "thick and soupy" air of New Orleans.
3. Elam and Janikowski tied Dempsey's record Thirty-eight (38) and forty-one (41) years after Dempsey set it. What athletic record has stood that test of time? DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak?
Goal posts aside and Dempsey's handicap aside, Dempsey was also a straight ahead kicker, not a soccer style kicker - which is common today. The sidewinders get better accuracy and power into their kicks, than the straight on kickers.
BTW, I know all about Mark Mosley's record in '82, and he was the last of the straight on kickers.
The only point I'm making is that Dempsey comes from an era where kickers were an afterthought, not the specialists they are today.
@keithsmove I'm an idiot because I stated an obvious fact? What the hell's your problem? Good for Dempsey, I have nothing against him. I'm just pointing out that his record was tied. Chill out.
@WhoDatChamp88 it was also in much thicker air making it very hard. had dempsey been in denver and it was a 67 yard attempt dempsey makes it. the better overall kicker is janikowski, however dempseys kick was way harder.
@jherl84 Yep, he did. Cool thing about Dempsey's is that it was a game winner, that must have been freakin crazy back in the day. I think the record before his was like 57 or something
Actually the yardage for the field goals since the posts were moved to the back of the end zone is accounted for. For example, for a 40 yard field goal, the ball is placed at the 30. Anybody with any kind of football knowledge knows that. Next time know you're talking about before you speak.
If you look at where the uprights are. These were the days before the uprights were positioned in the back of the end zone. If Dempsey would've kicked that ball in an NFL stadium today, it wouldn't have made it to the uprights.
@DoesNotExist305 No, it just barely did clear the goal post on the goal line; no chance to have made it another 10 yards LOL. But if what you meant was that any 63-yard field goal then -would- be 73 now, that's true. But the only way any team would try it is at this same situation with a regular gale behind them, as well as a kicker who can it away extremely quickly. And for the record, wasn't there a controversy about Dempsey's shoe for his half-a-right foot? That it had metal and was illegal?
@cynic2all Yeah I mean that by today's standards with the goal post being in the back of the end zone this would have been 73 yards. And the Raiders tried a 76 yard FG once lol.
Dodd made a helluva catch, especially by 1970s standards. That looked like something from today. Too bad that didn't lead to a playoff win or something like that.
WOW!!! Thanx for posting this video, I have never seen the original CBS broadcast of "the Kick" I was only 11 months old, my parents went to that game and left when Detroit kicked the FG that briefly gave them the lead.
@illustrate100 Karras hated field goal kickers. he said we bust our asses for 59 minutes and they get all the glory! After that record kick Alex met Dempsey on a sports talk show and his only comment is that he's sorry Tom didn't get the "stuffing" knocked out of him!!!!
It is great to watch this play again! In November 1970, I was flippping betweeen channels (all 4 of them, CBS, NBC, ABC, & PBS) and caught the last 3 minutes of this game. I remember Tom Dempsey kicking this ball and my body language umphing it over the uprights for a field goal. The muddy field, the players uniforms, the quality of the film, everything seems so ancient now, including me! This is when football was great, involved passing and running, and players let their play do their talking!
Future Vikings D-tackle Doug Sutherland # 60, and former packer RB Elijah Pitts #22 played for the Saints in this game. You can see them in the celebration
Criqui would go on to make several other classic calls including'
"Hard throw....WHAT A PLAY! What a play! Hall of Fame! Hall of Fame play!! That one goes to Canton!" from the 1981 AFC playoffs, San Diego at Miami, the "hook and lateral" play.
"This is for the national championship for Nebraska....INCOMPLETE!!" 1984 Orange Bowl, Nebraska vs. Miami, the two point conversion attempt by the Cornhuskers.
Thank you for posting this lensing of the ONE PLAY that thoroughly pissed my grandmother off when she watched it. "Those goddamned Lions didn't even rush anybody" I don't know that that's entirely true, it looked as if they put up at least a token block attempt but were making sure they didn't get a roughing the kicker penalty and give Dempsey a more realistic second chance from 48.
I asked Lions players Mike Lucci and Mike Weger about that play. Weger was the Lion player closest to the ball (top of screen) when Dempsey kicked it. Both Lucci and Weger told me that it sounded just like a rifle shot when Dempsey kicked it. Sure enough......... turn up your sound on this video and listen closely. You can actually hear a loud "BOOM" all the way up in the CBS broadcast booth when the ball is kicked. Mike Lucci and Mike Wegar were NOT exagerating to me one bit.
Listen closely........ you can actually hear a loud "Boom" all the way up in the CBS booth as Dempsey's club foot pounds into that ball!! Amazing. I haven't seen the CBS broadcast of this since I watched it live in Detroit in 1970. My Dad yelled: ""Jeeeeeez.....usssssss.....CHRIST!!!", then he kicked his chair in disgust before walking out of the room.
First time I see the original broadcast. Fantastic !!.As with other historic plays there are others, just as critical, that get get lost. Example:Cowboys / Vikings Hail Mary pass, there was the 4th and 16, 1st down converson. Vikings vs Cleveland...the Ahamad Rashad Hail Mary.Just before that , there was the hook and lateral..Sensere to Ted Brown.
Here, the clip shows a phennomenal catch by Al Dodd that made the kick possible. ( H ealso had a good kick off return seconds before )
One of the Greatest Moments not just in New Orleans Saints History yet the history of The NFL.His half a foot breaking the Field Goal Record by seven yards. It just shows you that just about anything could happen in this World.
Thanks for posting this. I was 9 years old, and a huge Lions fan back then. I was watching this game with my dad and older brother, and we thought for sure that he couldn't make the kick. When he did, I ran into my room and cried. I do have to say, that was a fantastic catch to set up the field goal. To the Lions credit, they did reel off 4 or 5 wins in a row to make the playoffs.
It's my understanding that there as an endzone camera that day at Tulane Stadium, but the CBS producer and director decided to use the sideline camera for this play to show viewers low long the field goal attempt really was.
This was probably the greatest moment in New Orleans Saints' history prior to Super Bowl XLIV.
Thanks for posting this--Don Criqui's play call is almost as good as the kick. And if you listen, you can hear Dempsey kick the ball--teammates said they had never heard that "sound" before.
@Rainwhisker167 I agree with you on Don Criqui. This is a classic call!
A video trading site named greatgames77 doesn't mention this Lions-Saints game as still existing, but it obviously exists, as this part is being shown. I would like to see the entire game uploaded here. Even though I'm a Lions fan and they lost, it would be wonderful to have this whole game available to watch. We could watch Mel Farr, Altie Taylor, Charlie Sanders, Lem Barney, and the rest of the 1970 Lions.
Do you have any more of this game?

OMG, so happy this isn't in slow-mo. All these films are in slow-mo. They'll make people look slow.

Rainwhisker167 1 year ago 2
@Rainwhisker167 I agree with you on Don Criqui. This is a classic call!
A video trading site named greatgames77 doesn't mention this Lions-Saints game as still existing, but it obviously exists, as this part is being shown. I would like to see the entire game uploaded here. Even though I'm a Lions fan and they lost, it would be wonderful to have this whole game available to watch. We could watch Mel Farr, Altie Taylor, Charlie Sanders, Lem Barney, and the rest of the 1970 Lions.

Great stuff. I had heard some of this game exists. I think John Sauer is the color man correct?
