The universe began to "bang" around 13.7 BYA. Been "banging" ever since. The origin of "big bang" itself could be much older than that. Until we understand quantum mechanics a little better, "String Theory","M-theory" and the like are still yet to make it through the "hypothesis" stage.

Here is where EVERYONE'S faith lies. The universe "banged", that's a given.

How, why and from where it banged is still the 1,000,000 dollar question.
