Right or wrong, we're in Iraq and we have to finish what we started. Leaving Iraq under the mercy of terror groups like AQI would be a major disaster. Thankfully our forces have implemented effective counterinsurgency tactics and the surge has helped spread the "Awakening" in Anbar through the most of the nation. Iraq is very close to being able to keep itself secure and it's govt is becoming more and more effective. That wouldn't be possible if we pulled out too soon.

The Iraqis don't want us there but compared to AQI, they'll welcome us until they're able to deal with groups like AQI on their own and more and more they're carrying out security operations on their own or at least with our forces in the background providing support where needed. Yeah, we'll likely have forces in Iraq for many years, decades even, to come but at the current trend it wont be combat intensive and the numbers wont need to be anywhere near as high as they are now.
