This was a marine species of hermit crab. That's why it had such a big shell, the water helps it to walk with such a heavy load. Not to mention, having him out of the water can dry out his gills, causing him to suffocate.

Apparently he or she wanted to be on dry land and you interrupted what it wanted to do. Trust me, I'm quite sure it was more than able to get back into the water on its' own when it was good and ready...

@mslegacy01 All your questions can be answered by reading and listening to the comments and video. 1 I told the kids to stop scaring him, but one wasn't mine and he didn't listen. 2 We found him in the water so we put him back where we found him. He is an underwater species and there was a dog there so we didn't want to leave him.
