  • majority of people will place one or two hands at or near thier throats.

it should also be mentioned that airways can be obstructed by anaphylaxis and asthma and that this technique will do nothing to help. An ambulance show be summoned right away if the person idicates they are in distress.

  • Haven't they added back blows now to the new choking protocol?

  • Its hard to believe but I choked myself almost to death while being at First aid basics program, that is needed to get my drivers licence.

  • Quick comment... Before telling them your "going" to help... isnt basic practice to ask for their consent to touch them, thereby keeping yourself protected under the good Samaritan act. "Are you choking?" "My name is ____, I know first aid can i help you?"Some people do refuse help... and if you touch them without consent... you kinda open up a ton of legal issues.

  • This is really not 100% effective its showing you only how to do the maneuver on a half body show dummy. you must stand behind him a certain way so if goes unconscious then you can still support him/her.

  • in school my m8 choked and died so thats y am watching this to see if something similer happens i could help

  • Seeing that brought back memories

I had to do the heimlich maneuver on someone who was choking on his food.

I never though I would have to do this

    I saved a life 1994.

  • They don't always grab they're neck. I didn't when I was choking. I freaked out.

  • stuck my finger down there

  • fuckin experts!!!

  • How would CPR get oxygen into the lungs if the offending item is still lodged in the throat?

  • the logic of CPR in a Choking victim is the compressions & rescue breathing.Remember that there are still air trapped inside thevictim's stomach, compression will force the air inside to push the object upward the throat while giving breath will push inward the object, this continuous IN&OUT force motion will eventually loosen the object to dislodge easily but b4 u give ventilation u must 1st open the mouth & visualize any object protruding..if so take it out with ur fingers,if not cont. CPR.

  • You would have to know if the obstruction is either a complete and/ or compromised airway obstruction or if it is partial airway obstruction. Also for furthur detail read WILKYLAO--- comment.

  • the offending item will be digested inside the lungs... lol.

  • What??? You don't slap the patient on the back, that can make choking worse on an adult or child. You only do 5 back blows on an infant as it's much safer then doing the Heimlich manoeuvre. Also patients do not always grasp their neck, they will be freaking out, that's why you ask the the patient if they are choking.

  • The hands around the neck isn't the ONLY sign of choking. A person my gasp for air, may start to turn blue or even point to their neck. And you should always encourage the person to cough first, before you even attempt any first aid procedures (unless they're already unconscious). Also, if the five thrusts don't work, then 5 slaps on the back between the shoulder blade should be done. If unsuccessful, continue a cycle of thrusts/slaps until qualified help arrives.

  • You never slap the patient on the back as, it can make the initial choking situation worse.

  • I meant slap as in back blows (according to UK resus guidelines), apologies if that was unclear. :)

  • Oh okay. You don't have to apologize. :)
