It's really only in America (ironically) tha Disney comics, including Mickey's, are relatively obscure. In Europe, particularly in Scandanavia, it's a very different story. Donald Duck comics are the best selling publication, period, in some nations, including Denmark.

But if you want to get to know with Mickey in a way few modern Americans do, I recommend reading 1930s and 40s stories by Floyd Gottfredson.
