This movie, while far from perfect ((In my own opinion)) is still a great movie, and by far the best attempt at this style of film we have seen since the classic Noir films. I need to try to find this movie somewhere and purchase it.
Half-assed lawyer Riedenschneider, explains the whole film, the lack of control over a person's circumstances, the ufo's, observation and effect, and ultimately death and the afterlife. And how funny it can all be.
@LightStijn Maybe not as good as Fargo... It's hard for me to say, I'm not really a huge fan of the Coens, like I enjoy their films but not to the extent many do. I found True Grit to be very different from their other work so that could be why it appealed to me more.
I thought this was vastly superior to 'Fargo'. The cinematography was more elegant, the screenplay was more classical in construction, Frances McDormand gave a better performance (and James Gandolfini was phenomenal), and the ending was more satisfactory and emotionally resonant (the ending for 'Fargo' was almost sickeningly sentimental).
They got this guy, in Germany. Fritz Something-or-other. Or is it? Maybe it's Werner. Anyway, he's got this theory, you wanna test something, you know, scientifically ...
He told them to look not at the facts, but at the meaning of the facts. Then he said the facts had no meaning...
Excellent film, un monument d'humour au second degré, du Grand Art !
The Coen brothers are like The Beatles of movies - so inspired. To learn how to connect to the source of inspiration, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says.
@goblue122394 Watch it again with the humor angle and add a thougth of Albert Camus "L'étranger" : you got it, an american cocktail for derision of existence !
This film noir style movie was missed by many...maybe because it was in black and white or not promoted correctly.....very intriging..and love some of the lines....like when Billy Bob says as he is cutting a boys hair: : Kind of sad...we are cutting of a part of our bodies and just throwing it away"..something like that." Scaring the kids.
@epicvlas Man, I would love to see this in color. Sure, it deserves to be in black and white but still. This movie makes so much sense. It doesn't matter who you are, what you do... we will all have to die.
I've watched all the Coen bros. films and this is right up there with 'Lebowski' and 'Millers Crossing'. For film buffs, there are sly references to 'Citizen Kane' and 'The Asphalt Jungle' - both of which seem to have been missed by critics.
I'm delighted too that the 'Archduke' trio is key - it's such a neglected piece. Overall, this film seems to be in that category too; a neglected masterpiece that uses the fatalistic language of late 40s 'noir' to wonderfully suble effect.

man seeing this movie in color fucked me up now i can't decide which version is better i saw the b&w one first so that's my fav. but the version in color looked good any1 seen both?
@Minic15 I've seen "Barton Fink," and as fascinating of an experience as that was, I still think "The Man who wasn't There" was better. Honestly though, my favorite Coen film, just out of the sheer delight it provided, was "The Big Lebowski." The beauty of film is that it's interpretive - one man's trash is another man's treasure.

nice trailer. suits the mood of the film nicely unlike some other trailers for drama which are made to look like action packed thrillers.

@SIngli6 True Fargo should've ended with Marge's speech in the car, the bit with her husband was completely unneccesary.

@DieCupcake
If it had ended with that scene, though, we would never have found out what happened to Lundegaard.
