@aqilwilliamsa Well, that is a rather recent review, isn't it. I think you're thinking about the post Bloom interviews, right. A lot of water under the bridge since this particular sequence was shot. E.g. the Dumble SSS is history.
I was just over 20 years of age when I first saw this. Eric still inspires me and he probably will till I die. I'm 39 now. I've realised I will never come close to Eric's tone or skill even if I did another 20 yeard of playing. I'd be dead by then. I'm really shocked that 116 people who didn't like this must be tone deaf or talentless.
Pretty Cool lesson here, Covers the topic quite well. Ive just made a bunch of detailed courses for beginners and advanced guitarists that you might be interested in. Check it out! would love to know what you and anyone watching this video thinks. Its totally free, and i mean TOTALLY
Yes, he "understands" the guitar, but what gets me about this dude is his tone. That overdrive tone is like from no where else but him. I can't even remember hearing anyone who get close to that tone. I hear he wires his guitars differently and his Marshalls are tricked out. But, then, I saw him in another video and he was sitting there with a Princeton and he had the same tone. I think, mainly, its his attack.
That lick at 1:38. Pure Eric Johnson. It sounds a bit wrong but at the same time he make it sound great it's become instantly recognisable as something he would create.
there is a HUGE difference with someone that can "play" guitar and someone that "knows" and "understands" the guitar. and eric definitely understands the guitar

I don't consider him a "shredder" in today's sense of the word because this dude completely knows his instrument and for his tone.....well...what can u say other than just great.
His tone is amazing.... aside from all the melody and phrasing and lyricism in his playing... notice how when he 'shreds' it just sounds so much better than other guys?
It just 'bubbles' some how - I can't describe it... it's so smooth and articulated even when he's shredding.
@RoyalBlue43 I couldn't disagree more. It would still be Eric Johnson playing if he played through a line 6 guitar rigged up to a line 6 amp (aka, no tone whatsoever). It would be a great player playing a guitar with terrible tone. They are very much separated.

@Je5sTheMudget Seriously, congratulations on your change in taste. Some music is about the actual music, and other "music" is about the people. Eric Johnson makes music. Rappers - superficial wannabes. To elaborate (on the rappers), with rap (you can't spell crap without rap) it's all about the stupid lyrics about drugs, sex, money, guns, murder, how the "government" is keeping you down. It's about your car, or your shoes or clothes or whatever doesn't make you who you are.Very materialistic cRAP
@DylanBStringer91 I overall agree with what your saying, but you cant just outrule all metal players. take marty friedman, he plays metal and hes one of my favorite guitarists. Check out his vid "King Of Ballad" thatll change your mind about metal =]
@planck23 it is of course, the intro to a hot licks video after all. they are all a 2 minute segment of (Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Greg Howe, Vinnie Moore... etc) ripping through some licks and scales that they show you later on in the video.
Session guitarist Eric Blaszczak...if you are a fan of EJ's he would definitely be worthy of a listen.Amazing player and has Ej's tone almost perfectly.I saw EB play with a tubescreamer and a fuzzface.Sounded like ej but smoother.now he's got a bias tube driver and the tone is rediculously nailed.
@SarahE34 So glad you mentioned EB.Probably the only player Ive heard that GETS IT on the EJ thing.I googled Eric Blaszczak and found a bunch of great stuff. His Cliffs of dover is the best live version on Youtube.TONE TONE TONE.Incredibly clean improvs.People dont realize how hard Cliffs is to pull off live with success. It takes a very talented person to do it with the right feel.Eric Blaszczak Improvs it and still pulls it off...WHAT????:)thanks for turning us on to him.Im a fan of both EJ+EB
@Noodleztherabbit haha thanks, yours is the first nice comment ive gotten about that.... people have been sending me private messages "how can you call your own father a motherfucker"... duuuh where do you think i came from!? sheesh
@worldindusa Oh come on bud, don't be so hard on your dad. I'm a dad and we're not perfect you know. lol You could always educate him and get him up to speed on Eric. Give em a chance. Some day God willing, you will get older and find yourself out of the loop and you hope that someone will be patient with you and catch you up. It happens to us all. Peace. : )
There are a lot of incredible pickers out there and this guy is a virtuoso to be sure. It takes serious talent to navigate that world. Hat's off to him.
Eric Johnson is jsut so amazing! His tone is miraculous, his music blows me away, his sense of musicianship is pristine. I give every single one of his videos 5/5 and every song is worth listening too. Keep rockin' dude!
anyone who doesn't like eric johnson...but likes guitar...mystifies me...he's one of the masters kiddies...if you don't like this I'm guessing you have tattoos and piercings and only listen to metal....
